  1. Lol they never showed today but we did:)
  2. They might just ask I mean you have a 50/50 chance are those odds available in Vegas:) Hunting has been good however either has been spotty one day hear next day there. I have been more mobile this year than any in the last .
  3. I got a spot already picked out:) it is exactly 2.3 miles down from the landing should be real fun!!
  4. Thanks just getting lucky, but I will say I decided to hunt smaller water more, early in the season. This came because talking to a few of my buddies that guide in the Dakotas were telling me the smaller water was working better this year.
  5. Well the Feds and the state ain't going to give us any days back so you got to take them while you can:) this was day 47 for hunting this duck season in Missouri for me:) and it all started this year with this hunt with my girls and a buddies son during the youth hunt. To me that's what it is about here are some photos of them.
  6. With the weather today I decided to close the office a little early and go get my brother. We hit the river up by our farm some open water and ducks a plenty did not start till 3:30 temp was -2 and wind chill was -23. Thought we might see some mallards but one saw one drake all afternoon, but we ended up with a diver day. 3 ring necks 1 woody 2 gadwall 1 mallard and 2 Canada's. Not bad for a quick hunt I guess all the mallards must be on big water or down on Taney next to someone's house;)
  7. About time they all got here the week ahead could be epic!!!
  8. I will say this I am glad old law dog Winchester is in my hunting group, I have to brag on my brother a little here so mark your calendar does not happen very often?. My brother is the only person that I have duck hunted with that can have three birds come in nobody else shoot he will shoot three times and have 3 ducks!!! I truly believe that my brother could take 6 shells to the duck blind and have 6 ducks when he left??
  9. Just talked to my buddy at the news station they are intrested in the story. This could be very interesting and educational for all parties involed. On a happier note I am headed up to river at the my farm got a call and was told it was loaded with mallards so maybe with this front all the ducks from up north showed up with it and the next week will be epic since this is the coldest weather we have seen in 30 years:)
  10. That's a great idea Phil who would we contact down there. Yea the deputy's are famous I was pretty riled up too, but everyone cooled off and all was good on the end of it. What's funny is that that spot was my second choice as we were about 10 minutes late and saw a boat go in my first choice. I was shocked to see all the ducks dumping in on that we had on us. Oh and my brother is the law dog that was hunting with me:)0
  11. Thanks had work for them yesterday! I agree on the docks, I guess what floors me the most is that this guy deer on hunts down there. . He is a hunter and should know the laws and rights. Now the other house not so sure they never came out. The deputy was nice and was doing his job of responding to a call, he did say he much rather be hunting with us than doing this today? Maybe we all need to ban together one day and go educate the houses with fliers explains the rights and laws of both parties involved.
  12. I have been out hunting 45 days so far this year and have had one of the best years in about 10 years, I have had. When all my private ground locks up I usually head to Taney to hunt the lower section basically we start about a 2 Miles from the landing and go all the way past Cedar point. Sometimes the people will yell at us telling us we are disturbing there peace but yesterday was a first had 2 Taney County Sherif Deputies show toting there Ar-15 and all the goods. Demand that we through our guns down on the ground now since we were in our boat hunting from the water I asked so we need to throw them in the lake . He asked us all to come up to the bank from the water and when we did he asked us if we knew who’s land we were on I replied yes we do it is Empire Electrics land and why are you here. He replied that the people that live in the house behind us were complaining that we were shooting loud guns, Yep we are duck hunting we don't just look and release. I said ok so you are just doing your job great no problem however why are their rights more important than mine he could not answered except to say I know you guys are doing nothing illegal, wow the houses that were complaining were about 500 yards away. This is what I do not understand how does a person that lives in a house over rule someone hunting on a public water way that is doing everything legit I did ask about the deer stands and the land owner replied those are mine. I then asked the so called land owner so you own this land where we were asked to come up to from the public water that we were just in and ( of course I already knew the answer) he said no I lease it from empire electric he then proceeded to change his tune and said ok you guys can stay and hunt. I said good cause we were in the water to begin with in which the people of empire electric have already granted us the right to hunt here. There comes a point in time though when enough is enough and the people need to understand the rights that a hunter has as long as he is legal. So I am basically letting everyone know be prepared because this year it has gotten extremely bad with the people that live in and around Taneycomo, we did however end with a hand shake and hopefully an understanding. My good Buddy Ducky Doty makes a very valid point too do they complain about the cars that drive by or the planes that fly over, and he is right if you are going to live near and around a water public water way you need to understand you might here something during duck season. So here is what I know Empire Electric owns the land and the people in the houses have the option to lease the land. You are allowed to hunt Taneycomo from Old KOA to Forsythe only section they don’t like you to hunt is from 65 bridges to Roark Creek for Obvious reasons all feeder creeks and everything else is fair game. Plus one thing I do I always hunt from the water so there is no question on the land issue. As hunter we are protected to legally chase and harvest game and are protected by a law from harassment from the public. I always set up away from any house areas and stay away from any docks and I do understand that the shots do sound loud coming off of the bluffs. Here are a couple of pictures from yesterday. oh we did manage to get it done to ended up with 19 ducks one mallard shy of a four man limit of Mallards and 5 ducks shy of a full 6 duck 4 man limit:) had to get home to keep the wife sane or we would have had full 4 man limits Have fun and be safe this is just another Michael Kyle Public service announcement.
  13. What a great fish and a catch of a life time right here in our local waters for both guys involed in the 2 catches. Also glad to see they were on fly rods IMO 31 inch rainbow would be about 15-16 lbs all depends on the girth, I have seen a lot of 30 inch rainbows caught and caught a few myself and none of them have been over 20lbs. My wife caught one that was 34 and girth was 19 inches and it weighed in at 19.2 lbs Plus our fish were actually measured with a tape measure not just laying it up against something and saying it is a certain length and girth. Fish can be very deceiving in size I have seen so many fish that were 20 inch fish be called 22-24 inch fish. Yes this fish is a monster rainbow but I would like to see what the actual measurements were other than a guess against a net and guess of the girth. With guessed measurement and with the calculations is does come up to 23.42 lbs. Which would smash the current state record. AGAIN GREAT MONSTER OF A RAINBOW TROUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think that the rainbows are going to be awesome this winter and I personally think that we might just see a new State Record!!
  14. They did stock land locked salmon back in the 70's to bad they did not keep it up I wonder how people would react stepping on all the caucuses from those fish:) I will have to agree that Taney is Missouri Largest Trout Park and it will be managed as such until we get something changed about the regulations on Browns. I can honestly say that I have caught a lot of big browns down on Taney at night with my biggest being 18lbs and to my knowledge they were all alive and healthy when I released them. They have all came on streamers or dead drifting big eggs at night. When I catch a big fish I take the time to make sure it swims off after we take a pic of the fish evn if it takes 30-45 min. I use a net just to land the fish then I take the fish out of the net so that the fish slime is not rubbed off on the net. To me a net will hurt fish more than they help the fish if you leave the fish in the net and let it bounce around. I take and hold the fish by the tail and gently move it back and forth in the water to get the O2 flowing again. Lactic acid and no fish slime is bad for a fish I think of the fish slime as a fish protective layer if you remove it you subject the fish to diseases then if you don’t take the time to revive the fish with O2 and leave it in the net you might as well take it up and eat it so it does not go to waste.
  15. Have to say great pics my favorite is the one with the 2 Mallards in it, cant wait for duck season to open up down here. Ducks be warned Doty and I will be comming after you
  16. The last few nights have been that way too just slow!!! Could be low DO I have not looked in a while to see what the Do level is. Big rainy days and nights are my favorite becuase you have the whole place to your self mostly, keeps your fair weather fisherman at home
  17. Fished last night with Marcus, they shut the water down around 9pm and we put the boat in around 10pm and fished till 3am. Started up top swinging and stripping mohair leeches, blood red was the hot color to start with. By the time we had drifted back down to the KOA area blood red had shut off and I put a black leech on and started picking a fish up just about every cast. They wanted just a little faster than they have had in the past nights but I feel it was because of the species that we were catching all Rainbows. I then got tired off fishing the leech and put the BFE on, I had not fished the BFE in a long time at night at Taney picked a few fish up on it just dead drifting with a tight line. The best color last night on the BFE was Clown, the BFE is an egg tied on a #2 nymph hook when you get done with it is the size of a quarter. We did not catch anything big last night and not one Brown just a bunch of silver bullets. Good luck I am out for a few days Duck season opens and we are hitting it hard this coming weekend with the kiddos. I feel so blessed to have 3 daughters that love to fly fish and hunt!! They are going to make some boys jealous in a few years Michael
  18. Fished Friday night with a buddy of mine from KC, Duane and Ryan, we hit the water around 10pm and Mike and I fished till 3am. We all started down by Koa and then made our way up to 3 rocks. Got a lot of short strikes probably for every fish I caught I would miss 2-3, I must be out of practice. Fished mostly Mohair leeches in red, electric blue and hot fire orange; then once the moon came up it turned off on those colors so we went to the good old standby of white, and ended up catching our best fish on White. They wanted the fly pretty slow pretty much just letting it drift along the bottom with a slow steady strip. Duane and Ryan left early so Mike and I headed up to the cable and fished nothing was happening up there so we left. I did not try any top water flies there were no fish surfacing at all I think that maybe the run has peaked since the full moon. Plus for the Mice I like a certain water conditions and by the time we actually got in the water that was gone. How ever the story time was one of the best in a long time just wish Laker67 would have been there. I sure like to figure out what the corp. is doing with water some of my favorite duck hunting spots up on the rock are starting to get dry. Nothing too big at night this go around Mike ended up with a nice 21 inch brown and I had a skinny 24 inch bow. Here are a couple of pictures.
  19. With this year Southern Council Fly Fishing fair behind us we are moving forward to next year’s event and are looking for any ideas that people would like to see or have done for next year so that we can build the fly fishing fair back to what it was in the past. Something that we have already implemented is changing the days of the event to Friday – Sunday. Jason Randall who writes for field and stream on a regular basis is going to be one of our key note speakers next year. We have also hired a bluegrass band for Saturday night ‘Missouri Boat Ride” the event will be held in conjunction with a BBQ dinner Saturday night at the Fairgrounds and it will be open to the public for a small gate fee. We will also be working closer with the Corp to make sure there is low water to ensure people can wade fish. Any suggestions that you might have to enhance the event will be considered, the event is for us a whole community of fisherman and not just a few of us that sit on the board. Now is the time to let us know what you want and I can personally assure you any ligament idea will not fall on deaf ears. If you also have suggestion for a keynote speaker that you would like to see let us know we are currently contacting a few to see if they would be interested in coming to the event. 20. No I have some that were 28-29 inches, those are my best this year though a 26 and a 24 in the same night:)
  21. It can be very productive, all though I have also been skunked on the mouse too at night. To be honest with you the only reason I fish the mouse is because it is something different and I have always liked fishing top water at night for bass so I now do it for trout. I guess that I also need to come clean on the mouse it all came about on a bet here the story of the mouse. We were standing downstairs looking through my fly bin and a buddy of mine saw the mice I use in Alaska, he said that’s a cool pattern to bad it won’t work down here. Being the good old boy that I am I said I bet I can. The bet was on; a tank of gas for the fishing trip, all I had to do was catch one fish. So we went down there we put the boat in and fished down the bluff he was using leeches and catching fish after fish and I was getting well you know that feeling but I was on a mission. Two hours had passed and some very difficult ribbing was taking place but finally down by the leaning tree it happens, I caught and landed a 12 inch brown on the mouse. I ended up catching 2 fish more that night on the Mouse oh and getting my gas paid for So there you have it how it all started for me on Taney and the White fishing mice.
  22. Last night’s report, I don’t even know where to begin so I guess I will start at the beginning. I will keep it short though. I received a text from a good friend that has just moved back into Springfield and he wanted to know if I wanted to fish with the weather changing clouds moving in and some rain in the forecast, I said twist my arm just a little more and I might. So I got home buttered the wife up by cooking dinner and let her know that Jeff would be by at 8:30 to get me. We arrived at Taney at 9pm with only one other car in the parking lotJ I had been wanting to fish some grass that is usually under water when the water is on and skate a mouse through it did not let me down about the 15-20th cast fish big fish and I missed it cast right back over it strip, strip, strip pause fish on and it is a toad best fish for me this fall 26 incher. The water really started to drop out come 10:-10:15 so Jeff, Brad and myself started working our way down stream and I was still just skating the mouse across the top of the water and they were fishing mohair leeches. Jeff had Blood red on and Brad had Ace of Spades on and they were doing the usual swing with a slow strip retrieve. They were picking up a few bows but nothing of any size just stockers. I continued down past outlet three about half way to the boat ramp casting the mouse along the bank and that’s when I had another blow up on it this time got him on the first take it was a nice 24 incher. The fish just quit so we decided to walk up to the cable and fish up there to our surprise when we walked back to the parking lot there were about 15 cars in the parking lot. As we were walking up to the cable it started to rain. We all had leeches on once we got to the cable and just slow stripping the leeches the fish were not aggressive just sucking the fly in, if you thought you had a fish on the line you had better set the hook most of the time it was just a tighter line coming in meant fish on. We stood there around outlet one up to cable and caught a bunch of fish, I would say between the 3 of us we had close to 80-90 fish. Jeff had a nice 21 incher as well up by the cable there were all the 20 inch browns that you wanted to catch up there and they were dancing all over the top of the water. With the full moon coming and the weather patterns with clouds and rain I would say that the next 2 weeks will be prime time at night. Last night the mouse was productive on the banks while the water dropped out then after that it was nonexistent. We then all three fished mohair leeches with Ace of spades being the dominate color of the night. Slow stripping it to the point that we were almost not even moving it. Here is a picture of the Mouse that I use. We fished till 0200, till next time good luck and hook a big one!!!
  23. Awesome report, thanks for posting glad to see the triploids
  24. Good report, if they would turn the water off earlier than they have I be down there this week with no moon out so should be really good fishing this week. I fish my mice by skating them across the top of the water cast the all the way to the bank then start stripping them back fast as you can strip the line then pause the strips and that’s usually when the fish will take the fly. You have to be dedicated to the mouse though it is not a pattern that you can switch in and out of you have to start and finish with it. I have my best luck on the mouse on Taney on the south side of the lake which is where the channel lies. I cast all the way to the bank lots of times hitting the rocks then letting it fall in the water just a real mouse would do. I also will put a trailer hook on the fly like a 2/0 just as you would do for a spinner bait. Here is a pic of the fly Phil should have some for sale if not let me know.
