Hello All I said that we do it so here it is on Monday August 28 at 7pm we will have a Taneycomo fly fishing seminar. We will cover the basics to the most complex. With some of the best fishing coming up I thought that it would be a great idea to have this so that everyone could come share thier knowlege about Taney. We will cover everything from gear to flies to presentation of the gear. I will have some Keynote speakers that I will let you know about at a later time. I hope that everyone will make it. I will have it here at the shop and it will be free of charge. If you have any questions please feel free to call the shop 417-889-6548 or just e-mail me at michael@backcountryoutfitters.org hope to see everyone. Michael

Thanks for the info was not for sure how it worked with dams We are going tonight will not be down there untill 2 and fish untill day light. Michael
-
It all depends on what is going on to how many people show up but we usually have 15-20 people show up. For the list of materials we e-mail it out so give us your e-mail and you can get on the list. Yes you can get everything here. Michael I got interrupeted befor I could finish about the power but I think that the wire and the substations store the power in a grid system if that makes since. Like I said I could be wrong please correct me if I am.
-
Bring tools and vice if you dont have any I have a few for people to use. On the power issue I wish that Table Rock would be more predictable. There are so many other Dams out there that are. I do belive that electricity is a storable product. Correct me if I'm wrong I think that they can store the actual electricty in a substation then release the power when they need it. However it does have a limmted shelf life. Michael

Last night could have been a good night. It satrted like this I had to go to Bolivar to the Tri-lakes fly fishing club and give a casting class. They have been turning the water off between 10-12 everynight I thought. We got down there at 11 and they still had two on same untill 2. I could not belive they ran water that late. Marcus and I met up with Leonard and watched him fish untill 2 and yes we stood there and watched him fish. He was fishing a glow in the dark scud and was using a lighted indicator in outlet two. He was catching one here and there. Leonard did have one nice fat bow measured a little over 19 great fish. When they finally shut the water off we made our way down to the Point and fished for about hour and half. I had 5 fish all on the blood red mohair leech. Not bad just wished they would have turned the water off earlier. I just want to let everyone know that we are still having our fly tying night here at the shop. We meet the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month @ 7pm here at the shop and it is free. The way I do it is I e-mail what we are going to tie to you and you show up we demo the fly and then you tie or watch and talk. Next Monday we are going to tie a sculpin using the Ep Dubbing brush with legs. Hope to see you there. Michael

All I have to say is thank God for 165, When we came through around 10:30 I could see the traffic was backed way up. There had to to be at least 30 cars on the ramp waiting to get on to 76. When we got down there, there sat some friends Rick, Marcus, and a new comer Ben from Kirksville nice to meet you. We were able to sit and talk for a while, while the water fell. They turned it off around 10 so around midnight is when I thought the fishing would turn on. I knew that we were in trouble when they said the day time was slow and not just slow but real slow. We started down by the big hole and right off the bat I caught a real nice chuncky Bow it filled my net which has a hoop of 18" and that was it for about 1 hour. I went through quite a few colors and ended up tying a Evil Leperchon mohair leech on. And started getting bit. We ended the night up by the cable at 2:30 had about 12 fish each. Not bad for actually only fishing for about 2 hours on a very bright night. I hope tonight will be better. I did have 4 Browns last night nothing of real size. Michael

I have to to agree with what Silvermallard and Bill have said. The fish will not move around so the slack water is great. They can sit there and wait for food to come buy at there leisure. One thing that I will do when they are running the water is to use a sink tip in the 150-300 grain depending on the amount of generation. With one -two units on the ones that I will use the most are Rio's stremer tip in the Intermediate version and or the 150 grain sink tip. I feel that gets the fly down quick and keeps it down. I love to fish streamers and love the sculpins the best during the day. I tie a sulpin in a gold vairant color on a size 6 with medium presentation eyes. I have caught alot of 20"+ fish on that fly. One more fly that works great for me when the water is on is the bunny leech in a size 10-4 with small to medium presentation eyes. The color will depend on if it is over cast or bright and sunny. On the overcast days I will use grays, black and purple on the bright days I will use the lighter colors like a olive, brown and and even white. I just happen to check the computer tonight before we left for Estes Park. I will not be able to respond to anything untill we get back. I will hopfully have a great fishing report only time will tell. One other thing I can not belive we are about 3-4 weeks away from some awsome fishing on Taney. Michael

RedHead® Finley River Stocking-Foot Chest Waders
Micheal Kyle replied to WebFreeman's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
All levels of Simms have a manufacture defect lifetime warrinty. The Freestone, The L2 the Classic Guide and the G3 oh yea and the travel wader. -
Strangercreek, I would have to say buy an american manufactured wader which would be Simms. The L2 would be the mid range wader from Simms they retail for $229 and have a three layer gortex from the thigh down and a two layer upper, and they have the built in gravel guards. The warrinty is the same life time. Michael

Thoughtful Fly Poll
Micheal Kyle replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
The three choices of size, shape and color, is a little restricting/narrow, but is a good place to start this topic on this part of the forum Fly proportion is probably the biggest factor, which combines size and shape. If your fly is not tied in the correct proportion, to what you are trying to imitate, it will be refused a majority of the time. A fly can be two sizes larger than the fish are taking, tied with correct proportions, will work with good success, even with a somewhat poor presentation. Materials used to give the fly action/motion, whether dead-drifted or animated by the angler, would also need to be given a large consideration. Now back to the topic at hand, given the three choices of size, shape, and color. I would have to voted equally for size and shape. jim -
Russ, I'm glad that it is working out. Michael

Greg, It is one of the custom mixes that I mix here in the shop. I have tested it alot at night and in the day and it works great. Michael

Hey I finally got back down to Taney last night been away for a week or two. Myself, Jim,and Jesse Riding with Rainy's Flies we had a great night. The moon came up around 11:30 and was bright. The water never really got all the way down I have not checked the charts yet but it stayed about 6-8 inches high. The rocks between the roking chair and the big hole never came out of the water and the lone rock that is up above on the south bank did not show untill about 2. As you can see we fished extremely late. Because the fish would not quit. With the moon up and bright I thought that I would start out with my good purple leech. In the first hour I would catch three and Jesse would catch 1 and Jim would catch about 10 getting frustrated Jesse and I moved and changed flies. I put the fly on that would end the night. Evil Leperchon I started picking fish up two or three in each spot working our way up stream. We worked our way up to the wire catching quite a few stripping the fly slow and long. Not long after we moved I asked Jesse what time it was and he said a little after three I decided that since it would be around 5:30 when I got home I would called it quits . So to sum it up we started fishing around 11:30 and quit around 3:30. The water took a long time to get down. Evil Leperchon was the choice of color for the leech long and slow strips. Between the three of us I would say that we caught about 60 fish had several bows that were nice and fat and would measure 16-17 "Biggest fish I caught was A bow that was a little over 18 inches. Jesse just called and said that he left his vest in the grass by the pavilion if any one has seen it and picked it up please call me at the shop. 417-889-6548 thanks. Michael

jdavis yes I carry the TFO line, for the money the lamson radius is a great reel that would balance great it retails for 149-219 depending on the size. The Ross rythym is good reel but however the drag componets ore not sealed where in the radius they are. Michael

That is funny. Greg is right I have had my Classic Guides for 8 years. The only time I have had a problem is when I went over a fence. Sent them in and Simms fixed them for 25 bucks. Michael

Had a good day fly fishing the James. Fished from Cox Ford access (private access) to Horse Creek (H L Kerr, MDC Access). Gary at James River Outfitters provided my shuttle service, highly recommed and very professional. Did have to walk over some gravel bars because of the low water, definitely need some more rain. Caught numerous Smallmouth, mostly in the 12 to 13 inch range with the largest just shy of 16 inches, several Goggle eye 7-9" and channel cats, biggest about 22". All of the fish were caught on a Whitlock's Hair Grub, that I have modified, and a Smallmouth biter, my modification of a Bonefish Bitter. Saw seven dead catfish and three suckers. More than likely died from the low water and high water temperature, 85* surface temp at 2pm. They were all in sections less than 18" deep. jim

Samkam, There is a healthy population of gizzard shad in Fellows Lake. The only time I see them near the surface is in the spring and again in the fall, when they would be the easiest to net. If you have a good locator on your boat you may find them schooled up in the main lake area. You may also find some bellow Lake Springfield dam. The come up there during high water. With the low water now and high water temps, there may not be very many in that area. jim
