Fellows Lake 7-30-16

I can do it I just need to get all that crap out my way so it doesn't get tangled in the line. I was hoping to let a big musky pull me around but some whites would be fun too. -
This is a Garth free zone.

Okay I have no problems casting the fly rod sitting at all. Yeah I could be a better caster but I suck standing too. However I totally blow at line management. It would help if I didn't have all the extra crap in my way. An extra rod, a camera with a floaty strap, a big gulp from the store. Plus I've got a paddle in my lap. Not impossible but I'm going to need to work on it. Caught some of these. And I was right about those little bass. They like a gurgler. I did hook a pretty good one but he ran right at the boat and I wasn't prepared with my mad line skills and couldn't catch up to him before he was gone. Then a bunch more of these. A smaller popper and a 3wt would be a blast up there right now. Those gills have a little trouble getting hooked on that size 2 B10S. -
Pretty much anything north of town stays north of town. That water typically goes in the the Little Sac. Water in the James comes from the James to the east of Springfield up around Marshfield, but can also come from the west side of town in Wilson's Creek. Unless we got pounded to the NE then nothing is coming. Last week or maybe the week before I drove out to Springfield lake to see what the water looked like. Looked great. We had received some rain but not that much. Went back after work to fish and it was a big muddy mess. While we had little in Springfield the had received 4 inches in the Marshfield area and it arrived about the time I got there to fish. Keep an eye on these 3 gauges and you can pretty much tell how it's going to be. James River - Springfield James River - Boaz James River - Galena

Don't point your rod tip down. It's different, but not an issue when you get used to it. Not that I throw a WTD bait that much. More of a frog or chug bug kind of guy. -
It usually takes around 24 hours for the water to get from Springfield to Galena. Looking at the gauges at Springfield, Boaz, and Galena right now it looks like this weekend will be perfect unless we get a bunch of rain between now and then.

Fellows Lake 7-30-16

I was the guy that used to pull the seats out of the boat before hitting the water. If you weren't standing then you weren't fishing. But I also grew up learning to bass fish out of a float tube. I got my first float tube and baitcaster when I was 8, my dad was awesome. So I'm totally comfortable with sitting low in the water and fishing. I have zero issues with it but that might not work for everyone. I've been mostly gear fishing until tonight when I'll take just fly rods. I hear people say that it will be almost impossible to fly fish that low to the water but I've fly fished many times waist deep in water. I'm thinking the guys that have an issue with that need to learn to cast better. I'm having a blast fishing out of a kayak. Fished out of everything from float tubes to 20 foot glitter sleds. And I can honestly say this is a pretty good time. -

Neither. I spent a lot of time looking at different mounts and even bought the Lowrance scupper hole mount and tried it but did not like any of those things. The problem I had with the scupper hole mount is that on my boat (Ascend FS12T) it allowed the transducer to hang down to low. I still want to be able to take this thing on some rivers without having to pull the electronics completely out every time. I won't have wires running on topside. Too many chances to screw something up like that. The ram mounts looked interesting but have the same problem. Maybe even worse since I have to haul it on top of my car. So I did the terrifying thing and drilled a couple of holes in the back transom area. Inserted some well nuts with silicone and installed the transducer bracket to that. Ran the cable up and then under and through the drain plug mount. The transducer sits low enough so it's under the water but not so low that it will ever touch anything. And when I haul it or take it on a river I can flip the transducer up so that it's out of harms way. Of course if I ever take it off or go to sell the boat it will have two 3/8 inch holes in it below the water line but that's what plastic welders are for. I will add that if water temp isn't a big deal for you then you can just do a thru the hull mount on the inside of the kayak. -
My college years were spent up there. Go up on Friday after work and go home late Sunday. Almost every week for several years. I learned two very important things about the fish in that lake. 1. They relate to spots very well. The best spots might be a small point or a spot the size of a car. There are two spots I found over the years that would always produce a keeper. I spent a lot of late tournament hours running to one or the other or both. Always a keeper hooked, not always landed. 2. Those fish like shallow water spinnerbaits. It does no matter what time of the year either. Once in a tournament in July. Burning a spinnerbait as fast as you could in water no more that 3 or 4 foot deep. 1st place easily. Another time in November just fishing with a buddy. It was 28 degrees and sleeting when we hit the water. I think the water temp was 44. Again burning spinnerbaits right off the bank and they would nail it. We had 20+ keepers that day. Those fish just like to be shallow. Reminded me of the ponds I grew up fishing in Oklahoma. Maybe that's why it clicked. It's a great lake. Don't give up on it.

Decided to give Fellows a try Saturday afternoon. I had spent most of the morning installing a fishfinder in the kayak and was anxious to try it out. Hitting the water right in the middle of the afternoon on a hot summer day wasn't the best idea but that's how it went. Dropped a twenty on the permit. Got the boat in the water and immediately was stressed at the electronics again. I knew it wasn't 9 feet where I was standing next to the boat. Wait what does that say on the screen? Simulation Mode. AAAARRRGGHHHH!! Problem solved. I did catch some fish. Nothing of any size but still plenty to entertain. Here's the biggest little fish of the day. There are a bunch this size. And they are all full. I caught a bunch and you can see gangs of them cruising around everywhere. Thinking the musky are probably loving these. I did catch one with teeth. But not a musky and still just a baby. Majority of the fish, including the walleye, were caught on a 4" zoom finesse worm in junebug. Need to head back out there with a pocket full of gurglers and a 5wt and have some fun with those little bass.

Pomme is a tough lake in the summer. The biggest mistake most make is trying to fish it too deep. There may be some fish deep but better fishing is going to be shallow. If you fish it like Stockton then it's going to frustrate you. Also if you need it to be as clear as Stockton then it's probably not for you. It's not going to ever be as clear as other area lakes. If you are only gonna give it one more chance then wait until it cools off. It's an awesome fall lake. Pomme has some great fishing but you have to work to find its secrets. The rewards are worth the work.

Inflatable on lake Springfield
Flysmallie replied to MObassin95's topic in Fellows Lake, Springfield Lake, McDaniels Lake
From what I was told several years ago by City Utilities is that you can't use a float tube or personal pontoon on any of their lakes. They seem to enforce that on Fellows but not on Springfield Lake. I would continue on until they say something which will probably never happen. I think I might have seen you out there a couple of weeks ago. -
THIS is why our government is the way that it is. They do nothing for us except try to divide us. And too many of you fall for that. I'll stay out from now on. But I don't have any tolerance for people throwing around the racism tag. It's stupid. If you want to call Trump a racist you go right ahead. I don't care. But don't come on here and start calling people that you don't know racists, that's just dumb. I can guarantee you I'm the farthest thing from a racists you have ever seen, my conscious is crystal clear.
-
Because I don't like being called a racists when I'm not. It destroys too many friendships and families. Besides you don't know dung about me for you and Old Plug to start with your racists talking points straight out of the "Democrat for Dummies" handbook. That's what Dems do when they get backed into a corner. Remember you are the one voting for a candidate that cheated her way to the nomination not me. Don't try to throw your ignorance off on me. I never once said Trump would get my vote over Hillary. I can tell you right now that neither of them deserve anyone's vote. And spare me the lesser of two evils BS. Evil is still evil. And don't call me a Republican or say that's my party either because it isn't. I'm not a bottom feeder that needs to associate myself with a party. I do pretty good without their assistance.
-
I don't really care who anyone votes for. Like I said, it's a no win situation. So make up your mind and vote for whomever you want or don't. But the accusations of racism are bullshit and that WILL stop on here. You want to preach that garbage take it some place else.
-
I think you are smoking too much wacky weed from your garden or got a hold of some bad shrooms.
-
And you don't know that she is the lesser of two evils. You are just assuming that she is. Vote for whoever you want. I don't care. But that woman is no leader. Period.

I think any president that admits to cheating on his wife in the oval office should be banned from the club. But the club don't see it that way. Even though we regularly ruin people's lives for a lot less. That's the real reason I hate Hillary. She stuck with him through all that, not because she loved him and she wanted to salvage her marriage, she did it because it was the best thing to do for her career. That to me is a person that will say anything, do anything to protect their power. But yeah like you said, how is that any different than any other politician? It's not. But if we continue to allow it because all politicians do it then what are we expecting out of a government. Why bust that gigger for illegally targeting smallmouth. They ALL do it. I'm not sure if Trump is smart enough to run a country. But I do know that he is a stooge and will cause plenty of problems for himself if he's lucky enough to somehow win.
-
Peanut M&M's or just regular?
-
What?? Are you serious?? All they have learned is that they can continue doing whatever the hell they want and nothing will ever come of it. Nothing. If we would start holding some of the American Royalty accountable for their actions then maybe we would get some decent candidates. But yeah Trump isn't any better. He's as sleazy as Bill.

Check is in the mail.

What's the point in a locked gate that a guy carrying two dozen decoys can get around?
-
Sounds stupid and obvious but once they grow up they aren't little anymore. I have one graduating college and another graduating high school this year. I'm taking donations.
-
That's the best decision yet. They grow up fast so do as much as you can before they get too busy with their own lives.
