  1. Thank you Gavin and John for your suggestions. I really appreciate it.
  2. John - That's about what I'm making. The modifications that I am making are: Color - It needs to look more sculpinish Snag Resistant - I'm either going to use dumbell eyes or a few beads (Bouncer Style) to make it ride with the hook point up Stinger hook - I'll probably use a short piece 20 lb. mono to attach to a stinger hook, also with the hook point up Eyes - I'm going to put some eyes on the top of the wool head, just need to figure out how to attach them Egg - I think I'm going to make some egg sucking sculpins too Any other modification suggestions?
  3. The 2-3 inch range should be pretty easy to do, but I'm going to have to come up with some different materials for a 5-6 inch one. I don't want to have to bring a 9 or 10 wt just to chuck huge flies, though it might be useful if one hooked a giant trout. Guess I'll go look for some sculpiny looking materials that don't absorb water.
  4. I'm working on some sculpin patterns and was wondering if stinger hooks were legal on flies in Taneycomo. Being that you can use treble hooks and hardware, I wouldn't think it would be illegal, but I couldn't find definitive answer. Also, anyone know the typical size of a sculpin in Taney?
  5. This thread in the Crane Creek forum has some info.
  6. This may be true a lot of the time, but fish don't follow rules very well. I typically use a size 18 midge also, but if they are biting and I'm not hooking, I will move to a size 16 to see if that helps. If I stop getting bites, I may move back to the 18 or to a 20 to see if they will bite it better.
  7. I received my flies yesterday. They look great. Now I just have to find some time to use them. Thanks for hosting the swap motroutbum.
  8. Thanks for the link Snow Fly. I've added it to my favorites. Orvis also has some good animated knots.
  9. I'll take 11/22/06.
  10. Congratulations. How far was this "Lucky Toss" of yours?
  11. Mine are going out today. You can see the recipe here. Some of them are going to be a little uglier, I was running out of antron at the end.
  12. I finally got a picture of the fly up. It's not the greatest picture, but it's the best I could do in the couple of minutes I had available.
  13. CAT Midge Emerger (Copper, Antron, Thread) This pattern only uses 3 material (4 if you count the hook). Use your imagination on the color combinations, the colors that I used for Fly Swap 2 are in parentheses. Body - Thread (Black) Rib/Head - Medium or Brassie wire (Copper) Wing - Antron (White) Steps Dress hook with thread Tie in copper wire at bend of the hook and cover with thread ending about two eye lengths from the hook eye Tie in Antron wing (1 wing, split wings, loop wing, wing case) Wrap thread forward and tie off Wrap wire rib forward and around wing Use the wire to create a head Put a little super glue on the wire and and wrap one or two more times around Cut off wire and push the little tag of wire onto the head with a bodkin or small screwdriver And now it's time to go fishing!!!
  14. motroutbum - Would a Postage Paid Return Envelope be acceptable instead of sending you some money?
  15. Ugly flies catch more fish. At least that's what I keep telling myself. Some of mine aren't near as pretty as others, but that's the way it goes sometimes.
  16. Depth can also be a key. The water doesn't move as fast on the bottom of a river and fish will generally hug the bottom. Adding a little more weight to your setup may be all that's needed. Doing a good job of mending your line is also very important. Experimentation is a very fun part of fly fishing. With the water moving a little more swiftly, you might try to do a little Czech Nymphing with a heavily weighted scud.
  17. Caddis - We have plenty of room. What do you want to tie?
  18. You can get to it at the Ozark Angler home page or go directly to it here.
  19. Dano is absolutely correct. If you have any other questions, Rodbuilding.org has a good FAQ that will answer most if not all questions you can have about rodbuilding. If you can't find an answer there, I suggest asking on their forums.
  20. motroutbum - Greg and Superfly look like they should be added to your list.
  21. motroutbum - Can you edit your original post and put the names and patterns of the participants up there? That way it's at the top and easy to find.
  22. MoTex - Congratulations on your second child and good luck. Don't worry about dropping out of this swap, your wife and kids need and deserve your time a lot more than we do.
  23. I started tying my flies last night. I quit at a dozen. I'm hoping that we can get a few more people to join this swap, I'd hate to be finished already.
  24. I looked at the bottom of the forums today (something I don't usually do) and it says that today is your birthday. So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
  25. I'll be tying some form of a zebra midge.
