  1. Drove to dixon today and the river is starting to geen up. Buddy at the end of the road at nagogami has been fishing recently. The bite is ok, but the river is definitely high. I prefer a 4 inch tube and some weight when it's like this. The hole below sring creek bridge is full of little males on the nest or getting ready to nest so fishing should be good if you find them. good luck
  2. Was alot of fun and kept them interested the whole time. Three rods is all I could keep going even with the wife helping. Fish to net, lines to untagle, bait to put on I was hopping for a couple of hours. I will see if interst level holds for meramec next weekend then It's time to have them hold a rod while bottom bouncing a crawler rig. They don't like it as much as trout fishing for kids day. If the water would come down I would take them drum fishing in a spot on the gasconade, they do like the pull of a big drum. Odds are about even with the little one.
  3. I have been fortunate to fish all over and growing up never had the opportunity my girls had today. As always the amount of trout was enough to keep even my fairweather fishermen interested. The youngest still had 2 to go and at 3oclock here came the hatchery truck with two scoops right in front of her. Two casts and the six yearold understood why I kept saying patience. Yes it's canned but the kids don't care and I saw skilled 12 year olds killing them. There were a seasons fish caught by some of these kids today. Never seen anything like it in any other state. Very good thing for the kids. They got all the attention as well. It definately peeks their interest, alot less in the vendor area than meramec in the past years, if you missed today meramec has the same deal next saturday. worth the trip for a kid to have a successful day.
  4. It's a great place to fish and camp. I always went in on the east side on the gunflint as well. I do have an old fishing partner that I fish with in Alaska that is from crane lake. His family has a lodge and outfitting service on the west side of the park. I know that they run both motor and paddle trips. His boys are about your age, but they spend june and july in AK as well. He would be a good contact for you as well and the west side is less crowded than ely area if your looking for wilderness or the kind you can find in the lower 48. His wife runs the outfitter side mostly, but he would be a guy you could call as a great resource if nothing else no bs individual and grew up up there. talked to him this morning and theres snow still in the woods. Reminds me why I came south. His number is 218 9666647, that's his cell so use it on the weekends or evenings please just tell him guff gave you his number and enjoy your trip it is a fun place just stay out of bug season, there like nothing you've ever experienced trust me on this. Camp on islands and the bears are no problem. The other guy was right no griz that area, but blacks can ruin a tent in short order, then your cold and wet. Part of the fun of backwoods camping is what you have with you is it, adds something to the trip. Have fun.
  5. Soccer game at 11 then it's off to beat the water to a froth. 7 year old is all atwitter she caught a five pounder at meramec last year and claims she is going to repeat trophy and all. I get a kick out of this every year, more fun than shooting a brown bear.
  6. thanks for report gonna run to stockton friday and saturday and chase marble eyes. Uncle who lives on lake said it had slowed down considerably as well.
  7. I cleaned 14 I caught Sunday and only one had eggs in it. Same size in the 10 inch range all of mine came from very shallow water and no milt present either. I would say it's getting close to done, weather we have today is slowing them down for sure. Will Probably have a report wednesday, I have time off and the weather looks good. River fishing is done around here for quite some time, but atleast we're not flooded to any great degree.
  8. See them around the house all the time, but I live in the woods. They'll be at the pole barn eaves before long they drill them every year. Turkey numbers are way down here in Rolla had a textbook opening day, but it's hard to find a bird to work later this year. Hve some at the house, but the public land birds are scarce or just not thick like they were four or five years ago.
  9. today they were on backside of docks very shallow. water is a little off color out of coffman. Get there early or your going to have quite a walk after parking. very busy at the ramp. whole lake was buzzing today.
  10. I was in ellington on sunday for family day and it all looked pretty bad then and I'm sure it got worse. Drove around in the afternoon and everything was bank high or higher. Some of the areas closer to the plateau don't look so bad. Saw BP and LP today and they're not near as bad as they have been. The Gasconade on the other hand is a mess and as bad as 2008 I'd say. Blue springs, black current, and JF, area got a ton of rain.
  11. Sorry to hear it's happening again Phil. Ice went out early in king salmon so rainbow fishing should be very good this year. Oceans of water here in Rolla too.
  12. I'd say they're about over here now. Too muddy for me and the creeks will wash out all the bottoms now. Had a good year found 3 hundred or so. I do better back in some wet holler usually in this area. all the area south of newburgh has some morels at one time or another. Lots of public land just find a draw and walk it out with special attention to the sides and bottom. You will find alot of greys growing right next to white oak trunks on the side hills around here. Not much ash or elm in the woods around here. Some people get them pretty good in fencelines around old pastures stick to the turkey woods myself mostly. THIS RAIN IS GOING TO BE HARD ON THE HATCH. TOOO MUCH!! have a second tag and they should be active trying to nest a second time. I did find 28 blacks in the pasture on the 4th of may 4 years ago so maybe there would be some morels, but turkeys would be a better bet the river fishing is done for weeks I would say now.

    Howdy

I went to railroad ties because everytime it rained like this my garden soil manure leaves etc. washed down the hill. the only knock I have with a raised 60 by 40 bed is that you'll take alot of water in the summer. It does seem to dry out faster than level garden. Might be an issue in the city if you have to pay for water. I dug mine down first then added good stuff on top like suggested. Good luck

  15. Saw several people fishing mill creek on wed when I was chasing turkeys and mushrooms up kaintuk. Water looked good but one guy I talked to said trout were all small. 30 years ago it had lots of 4 or 5 pounders in it. Wish it would come back I must be getting old if I remember the good old days, haven't fished it in 25 years probably won't ever again. It is not what it once was. rather drive to michigan once a year and get my big trout fill. Anybody fish the hex hatch anymore?
  16. saw my first ruby throat last night he looked cold and hungry all day today, good post they are late by a week or better this year, global warming i guess
  17. Water was clear and there were quite a few fish in the holes now that you could see them. 1lb. test and power bait and got out of there last night in an hour with a nice limit. fishing has gotten better with the weather, now it's on to turkeys they are scarce this year.
  18. The lower river below the fort was slow on saturday and low and clear before this rain. The rivers are brownish this morning but should clear up again by next week depending on more rain. Fish were all small and not to many surprising. the goggleye are biting though.
  19. Put in at gale access today at 1000 had 10 year old with me playing hookie cause she had perfect attendance for year so far. The day was for her we fished until 200 had 11 keepers. I caught one and baited her hook with minnows while fishing a jig, if you count lost and missedd fish we should have had 2 to 3 times as many all on her minnow 2 ft. below a bobber close to any brush next to the bank. The cold front coming tommorrow will probably change things, such is fishing. That was what went on today. Fun day had by all!!
  20. went yesterday afternoon. Water is still a little high and offcolor. Fishing was surprisingly slow. Fished from 2-5 and only saw 6 fish caught. Caught 2 from 4:30-5:00. Other than that not much action, was curious if fishing is slow for everyone this year. Usually hot right now and just a matter of putting your time in.
  21. Started season today around 8. Chilly but good fishing not great fishing. No crowd and rain tommorrow will murk it up again so it seemed the right thing to do. Power bait on the bottom was all it took to catch a few.
  22. nice fish anywhere. kudos
  23. You can order them from porters wholesaleby the pound they'rein brookings sd 605-555-1212. They ship pretty well should be cheap in that neck of the woods with all the water this year they were filling the mouths of culverts a month ago i'm sure. Have them send me 5 pounds of fatheads too if you get a chance.
