I can't speak to braided line as I haven't used it before. For mono I use green on anything that I don't watch the line as much. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, topwater, dropshots, splitshot, grubs, and C rigs. For pitching a worm or jig I use clear. My only reasoning is that the green is less visible in the clear water and the clear is easier for me to see above water.

This was a repeat of my last trip. Took my daughter down to catch some fish. Trout on bubble gum power eggs. Rigged a split shot about 12" up from the hook put on two eggs and put it in the water. Anywhere from a short pitch from the dock to 30' out. If you like suckers pick up some red worms and fish them straight up and down or a short picth from the dock. We got one nice one that put up a good fight on the trout tackle.

I have been looking for a fishing hotspots type of map for Taney with no luck. Does anyone have a good topo map of the area that might have some details?

I have navigation issues. Where do I turn to get to the Cooper Creek ramp?

I took my youngest daughter down to Rockaway yesterday afternoon and the bite was on. It was a steady bite on decent stocker rainbows despite the strong winds. We fished night crawlers, bubble gum power eggs, and a combo of one power egg and half a crawler. The straight power eggs outfished everything. Only one short bite on the crawler and nothing at all on the combo. I would say the fish may have been stocked recently as they seemed to be schooled up and hugging the bank. Fish were caught from a straight under the dock to a short pitch in front. No need for really long cast. We caught one sucker on power eggs but couldn't get a bite on the crawler. We did see a couple of other suckers caught on red worms. I'll be picking some up when I go down there again. If anyone knows where the carp are hiding I would like to get into a few. I like to C&R them on light tackle.

I don't fish Taney enough from a boat and only know of two public ramps. The one in Branson is ok but can get a little croweded and the parking is not so great. Rockaway is not crowded but is dicey to launch in low water. Where else can I put in at?

I was wondering if there were some fished stocked in the James. I caught a 20" eye up there this spring along with several good crappie. I hope the walleye can establish themselves. I wouldn't mind another 'pan' fish option at Table Rock.
-
There are walleye there to be caught. I know one guy that has targeted them with mixed results. For crappie you may want to look at Cape Fair. I saw a bunch of guys fishing just below there. Also try above Cape Fair near the bridge. Good luck.

Bass in Taney? That can't be. Must have been the Loch Ness moster. Those green fish couldn't live in that cold water. Nothing but trout and carp down there.

I fished today! First time in a while...

I fish a crackleback alot and this is the first post I have seen where someone else talks about fishing it a lot. I fish mine dry most of the time but will also let it slip just below the surface and this can produce when the fish are not as aggressive. I have also fished it wet and stripped it back for some really hard strikes. I mostly drift a fly and have a hard time conecting when a fish hits it and I am stripping. There are probably other ways to fish a crackleback too so don't be shy about trying different things with it. I like to say that I can barely cast, can't read water, and don't know a midge from a gnat but I can catch fish on a crackleback. -
I have seen the good reports and pictures of the big fish at RR and wanted some advice on what to bring. How heavy a tippet can I get away with and what flys should I have? I normally fish a 6X or 7X tippet but with some of those bruisers I would hate to fight them for a long time on light tippet if I don't have to. Thanks for any words of wisdom.

How are the teams put together? Random draw or BYOP (bring your own partner)? I may have missed it somewhere in the other post so if I did please point it out.
-
I might be up for that. I need to get my daughter out and she hasn't been to RR yet. Settle on a weekend before the 22nd and I'll try to make it.

Yep and for all the stuff to get it that way there's Master Card.

The in laws will be in for Christmas but that wouldn't have stopped me from fishing. I need to do some boat work and service my reels. I figure between new electronics (console and bow), having the trolling motor fixed, replacing the tralier jack and winch, and replacing the tail lights and markers with LED's I'll have plenty to keep my busy. After it's all done I'll be ready to hit the water in the spring and tear it up. Besides there is always fly fishing if I need a fix.

I started at outlet 1 and worked my way to rebar and back again. Fished glo balls on the way down. Just looked for groups of fish and drop it in front of them and see which one would jump on it. Coming back I stopped just below outlet 2 and switched to a crackle back. Missed more than I caught but the ones I stuck just killed it. The most interesting fish of the day was a brown with either a broken back, tumor, or some other problem. It swam away strong after I got the hook out though.

I finally put the boat up for the winter. Time to take a break and enjoy the holidays with friends and family. I hope everyone has a good bite this winter and look forward to getting back on the water long about Febuary.

Ouch. With the lake down this will not be the last. There are a lot of long points out there and some saddles that are just covered. Thankfully with the cooler weather there won't be many people on the water. This should give every one pause. Make sure everyone has their pfd, keep the hands on the wheel and throttle, and pay attention to driving.

Thanks for the regs info. I have some P-Line trout beads that match the size and color of the eggs those fish were droping. I like the yarn idea. These beads have a large center hole that would work good rigged with some yarn as stuffing so that it sits good on the hook. I am going to look for some small circle hooks because the fish are hitting that egg so hard they are taking it deep half the time. I am also looking at fishing larger glo balls to see what happens.

I fished during the day from Outlet 2 to Rebar and did good on Cracklebacks and Glo Balls. There was a big hatch going on (looked like midges but I don't know much about hatches) and my truck was covered with the little suckers when I left. I did catch a couple of fish on a scud just to mix things up. All of the better browns I caught on the crackle back were females and dropped eggs as I released. I am always gentle with the fish and leave them in the water and turn out the fly if I can but that didn't seem to matter. I know the eggs are going to be fish food most of the time anyways but is there a way to handle a fish so they won't drop the eggs? I also have a regs question. Can you use hard plastic egg imitations such as a bead in the trophy area? Looking at those eggs being dropped it got me thinking of better imitations.

Thank you for the info. I actually have a few of these that I have taken out of trout at Taney. I am always amazed out how much jewelry some of these fish wear. I have even removed drift rigs from fish that are mostly rusted out and the line covered in moss. I was going to make the drive over tomorrow and get in on some of the C & R but the weather window is iffy and it is about a 2 hour haul for me so I'll pass for now. Hope the big one don't get too sore mouthed.

I am still new to this fly fishing thing. What does a Burlap look like? I have scuds, a few drys, glo balls, san juan worms, and some wooly buggers.

I agree with the waste of money. There was a drawing somewhere from the Corp. that showed what would happen if the new dam had to open. The water would come down and put the hatchery under several feet of water as the flow moved down to join what would be coming through the big dam. From what was shown on the drawing it was supposed to save Branson from water cresting the big dam and flowing un checked. The next time I am down at the hatchery I am going to ask if they have any info on this.

It's good to hear the agents are on top of things. Have they gone to a barbless restriction yet? I crush the barbs already since I can't keep anything. I am glad you mentioned the picture thing. I try to keep the fish in the water and turn out the fly with forceps. I guess if you want a picture you need to have someone snap it while you are taking it off the hook.

Now I have to bring my flyrod when I go after another hidden fishery down there. I ain't spilling the beans on that one though.
