Please specify who you believe would desire to commit a cold blooded murder and how you arrive at that conclusion for those individuals.
-
This exact situation did occur, an armed citizen drew their firearm, he did not shoot himself in the foot, or a bystander, the violent felons dropped some of there goods prior to escaping, the police did not arrive to make arrest, and had to investigate and make arrest later that evening. Can we agree on those facts? The situation to me is pretty clear...Three armed, masked men enter a store, brandish firearms, demand money, and firearms. Is there any disagreement on this? Let me state this again for those that are confused. I am not playing out some fantasy scenario. I am commenting on the article and the actions of those involved. For those that believe the armed citizen in this situation was doing something wrong feel differently if it was a uniformed police officer and the situation occurred in exactly the same manner?
-
For those that are placing blame on the armed citizen can you please explain why you excuse the actions of the criminals involved that resulted in this situation? A good guy with a gun draws on three violent felons that are hauling off firearms and cash and the guy that draws is somehow in the wrong does not compute with me. The unfortunate thing in all of this is that the minors involved will likely get a slap on the wrist and continue on to commit more violent acts in the future. I hope they will all be tried as adults and sentenced as such. That would be the best outcome to this.

I do not understand the fantasy reference. This actually occurred. I merely clarified the language of a poorly written article. No rational person wants to be in a confrontation that may result in the use of lethal force. I have never been on a 'two way range', I hope that I never am. Back to the article... The specific case here is unusual in that you have armed, violent felons in the process of trying to obtain more weapons. Lethal force has already been brought into play by the criminal. It does not appear the armed citizen was in fear for his life so it gets muddy as to whether he was right in the eyes of the law. I am not versed on KS statutes regarding the use of lethal force in the protection of property, but given that the armed citizen was not charged I would say he was legally within his rights. Now morally was he right? I would lean to yes he was. Preventing violent felons from obtaining, weapons, for me passes the sniff test. The article we will never read is that weapons stolen from a sporting good store were used in a drive by shooting that resulted in the death of an innocent.

Interesting. What % of CC holders have experienced a negligent discharge? How many of those have resulted in injury? Since I can not readily find this information on the news where are you getting your numbers from?
-
For those saying the Academy guy was in the wrong, did you read the article? This wasn't three kids running in and shoplifting. If you are ok with violent felons stealing firearms and are giving the guy that drew down a ration you really need to evaluate your priorities. Did you miss where they were in the process of committing an armed robbery and had already introduced the threat of lethal force into the situation? Let me summarize the article and clean up the drivel it is written in..... Three armed, masked men in the process of committing a violent felony, attempting to steal firearms and cash were slowed in their efforts by an armed citizen. Police were unable to respond in time to be effective in any capacity, but were fortunate to apprehend the violent criminals later that evening.

Thank you for clarifying. Initially I took it as you were opposed to concealed carry. I appreciate that you can make a decision that works for you and not want to impose that on everyone else.
-
There are plenty of misguided people that want to prevent legal firearm ownership and other that are just as bad that want to regulate it to the point of firearms being museums pieces. Pretending otherwise is naïve. Perhaps you should re read the 2nd Amendment, specifically it contains the language 'shall not be infringed'. It does not state you can own them, but they must be locked up. It may surprise you that people can own firearms, carry concealed, and do so safely and effectively. Thousands of people do it everyday and the streets are not running red with blood, there are not shoot outs on every street corner, and more than one crime is prevented by the mere presence of a firearm in the hands of a potential victim.
-
I am trying to follow how a concealed firearm would get you shot. Perhaps you can better explain. As a rule you would not draw unless you were in fear for your life. Until that time the firearm remains concealed. If you are drawing then things have already started to gone sideways badly and you are well on your way to getting shot, stabbed, beaten, ect... That is why I ask for a better explanation of how a concealed firearm would get you shot if you would otherwise have not been. Personally I do not plan to rely on the good graces of a criminal to spare me or my family harm.

basscatfan sums things up pretty good. Simple exercise....If you have car insurance and wear a seat belt do you go out with the intent to get in an accident? Of course not. But if you are in an accident you will be grateful for those things. No one goes out looking for trouble, generally those that carry will go out of their way to avoid trouble. That may mean making a longer drive to avoid the bad part of town, walking the long way around the block and not cutting down an alley, and being more aware of their surroundings in general. Before anyone gets worked up that this sounds paranoid....Do you run red lights? Generally you probably don't. Why? Because you are aware of what is going on and know doing so has potential risk. Back to the OP....Open carry, concealed carry...Do what you like. If you open carry it generally won't be noticed by Joe Public anyway. Wear a polo shirt, khakis, and look clean cut and most people will assume you are a LEO. Look like a bum and you might have invited the man into your life.

Maybe he is into three gun, likes to punch paper, pop some tanerite targets for fun, or just likes them. Maybe he is not into varmit hunting so having a safe queen that doesn't get used isn't his style. It is highly unlikely he has any desire whatsoever to go shoot someone. Before drawing conclusions maybe you should ask him to make a range trip with you. Bring your varmit rig and ask him to bring some stuff. Maybe you both will learn a little.

Swing over to the 86 bridge and drop shot the pilings, but that will wear thin after a bit. Fish Big Cedar Hollow, you can probably catch enough fish on a Ned to keep you interested. Go out early and look for busting fish, throw a topwater at them. If you are out past Jet Ski o'clock be careful of wakes.

I fished 8# mono and did fine. I believe 6# would have fished a bit better. The microfill stuff looks interesting.

At one time I would push the limit, no more. When thunder starts rolling I start looking for a place to hide or just get off the water and hang it up. I will freely admit I have hunkered down on the floor of the boat to make sure I was as low as possible to help my odds of not getting crispy.

Nice day on the water right there. Were they suspended or tight to the bottom?
-
Topwater early is probably a good bet, but that will turn off after the sun gets up unless you catch a break and have some cloud cover. I would probably look at having a drop shot ready and poke around the same areas you have topwater action after the fish settle down for the day. If there is water up in the brush give it a go, it's free to try and you can always work your way out until you find some action. Flip some stuff and if they don't play pull back out and deploy the Ned.

That explains the vehicles I saw with flags flying. -
Water was 70 to almost 71. A touch of greenish color. Light wind and overcast all day. Water was up in the bushes and some shad scattered in them. I really wanted a topwater bite and spent most of the day throwing a spook. Total topwater fish=1. What caught fish.... 4" and 5" grubs, watermelon red and milky pepper, 1/4 head. Swimming or scrubbing on main lake and secondary points. Caught fish with the boat in 20-30'. Ned rig. Moved a bit shallower at times and caught plenty on the Ned. 1/16oz was much better than the 1/8oz. both worked, but the 1/16oz. had a better 'feel'. I would wager running a spinner bait or buzzbait along the bushes would catch a few. Go get them before the lake is overun with skiers, wakeboards, et al.

I just realized this was going on this weekend. I aborted my Sunday trip and will probably bail to Taney. Good luck to those of you fishing it.
-
Sometimes you can get away from it by moving out off the bank a bit. I ran into some snotty areas last trip out and moved off the bank a bit to some deeper water and got out of it.
-
Get a good solid cast to cast and a half off the bank and fish the NED. I found the 1/16oz jigheads worked much better than the 1/8oz. It should keep you busy.
-
Easy, I wanted to see something blow up a topwater and I like the feel of a fish mugging a crankbait on the grind. I got half of that yesterday.
-
More gravely 45 degree or so. Bigger rock and ledge stuff was not near as good and steep stuff didn't work so well. Parked the boat in 12-20 ft trying to figure out a better depth. It all worked well and I could not put my finger on shallower or deeper being better.

On the water about 7AM...Overcast all day, water temp from 58 and change up to 60 back in areas with some wind protection. Started swimming a grub on a point for nothing. Dropped into a pocket and it was game on. Ned and split shot with a fish dr. worked very well. Fish were not banged up, no bloody tails. Did see fish on beds and cruisers but was not targeting the visible beds. Went back to a point and caught a couple or rough looking buck bass. Gave up on that and bounced from pocket to pocket. Fished mostly new water and caught fish off of the right type of banks. Messed around longer than I should on some garbage banks for not much. Got tired of catching fish on the Ned and started throwing other stuff. TX rigged lizard caught a few, ran a bank with a wart and caught a few, should have thrown a spinnerbait. No love at all on the topwater. Areas getting hammered hard by the wind were not too good, seemed the fish wanted a little protection from the wind, but a bit of ripple on the water. First time fishing the Ned rig. Lighter heads worked better even with the wind. It is hard to fish wrong. I was fishing it dead slow, my partner was moving it a little more, we had a few doubles and a few back to back so both retrieves were working. Ended with 30ish, 8 keeps, 5 best about 12#. Nothing broke, no one got hurt. Good day overall.
