Walleyes and walleyes and big smallmouth basses... (to the tune of "My favorite things")
-
Do those come in triploid? if you look at the side, its a cutthroat. top, it's a rainbow.
-
If this were the largemouth bass record on the line, you perhaps would see a different angle. If a triploid bass (not just a different strain) were bred, and caught and replaced the record, people who have fished in florida and cali for a record would go BALLISTIC!! The easy solution that should make everyone happy is to make a seperate record for triploid trout. It would kill the controversy, because who cares, really? Randall said as much - the people who care most about classification are the ones that think they SHOULD be classified differently. And that's perfectly ok. I'm not going to say these guys were cheaters, because if these trout were in Taney, of course I'd be targeting them!! They're dad-gum huge! Can't fault these guys for fishing for them.

Its the nature of trout parks. It's like going to Disneyland when you could go on a hike in the woods. Disneyland is fun... but the people will WEAR YOU OUT! Haha - if someone asked me to show them where the fish was hooked, I'd hook HIM in the mouth with a 1/2 treble. As already posted, I always break off foul hooked fish (unless they're real small), and can also spend hours on one fish. A lot of people at these parks are not serious fishermen though - and I'm just glad they're at the trout parks instead of Taney or some other small rivers around here!!
-
Never caught a trout on a scud fly?? They're my bread and butter! Sounds like you did alright w/out though - glad you enjoyed!

This is in relation to the previous thread about rainbow world record controversy. Just for fun to get an idea as to what everyone is thinking.
-
In that case, I'd be up for putting 300 or so in Taney - as long as they are tagged somehow. Think about largemouth bass though. You have people who put enormous effort to catch a record LM. If you bred a genetically 'superior' bass with the sole goal to produce huge fish, wouldn't it negate the effort of all the fishermen who have persued since Perry? (and now perhaps Kurita) Here's the next question - put a few in Taneycomo? Yay or Nay?

Here's a little article on polyploidy and speciation. I didn't know ferns were as subject to polyploidy as it says they were though. http://www.genomeweb.com/study-finds-polyp...ation-mechanism Sometimes in gametogenesis, one of the final gametes contains the entire genome (not just half). (via improper cleavage, faulty spindle fibers, ect..) This won't cross with a normal gamete (so actually you are right - you can't go from diploid to triploid), but they will cross with another improperly seperated gamete (2n), creating a 4n individual, and creating a new species which can only breed with other 4n individuals. The test would be to see whether these triploid trout can breed and produce fertile offspring. If they can, they are a new species. If they can't, they fall somewhere between a species and a hybrid in definition. I'm sure there is some biological definition for such an organism - but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Well, I believe a triploid fish is a different species. Many plants have multiple species of the same "type". A simple fern can go from diploid to triploid and a new species is created. The line seems to be fuzzier with animals, because while many polyploid plants are still fertile, most animals with extra chromsomes are, like hybrids, sterile (when manufactured by humans). In nature, some undergo asexual reproduction (essentialy cloning) I believe these trout are sterile, and should be considered a seperate species (similar to the "Wiper" or the "saugeye", though the trout are not hybrids) Where do you draw the line on "manufacturing" big fish, and allowing them to take the place of record holders? What's real and what's man-made? (in truth, most of our fishing experience has quite a bit of "man-made" in it - like Taneycomo itself, and Table Rock, of course.) Not saying thats a bad thing, of course!
-
Really?? Ah man! - I shoulda used 4! That's one thing I did learn today I guess. It'd be a little hard, I would think, to use three poles unless you were trolling spoons or crankbaits or something, wouldn't it? I guess if the water was off...

Haha - I was going to let this drag on for a while, but I see that I'd better cut it short before people start calling MDC and I get hauled off to jail. This report was a joke - I haven't been fishing in over a week. Last night I realized that I have very long experiment I'm working on in the lab today, (I'll be here from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm), and I desparately needed something to give me a chuckle in before I got started. Sorry y'all, but I needed a laugh this morning I may register my disappointment that no one noticed that I was using three rods (two w/ powerbait, and one with a jig). Maybe you missed it because of the outrage induced by the idea of keeping a brown trout. If this is the case, I will let it slide. Perhaps you noticed, but chose to ignore it in light of my other offenses. However, I'm glad there are anglers passionate enough to care when rules are broken. Apologies that my entertainment had to come at the expense of your blood pressure. Have a wonderful day!

Had some company coming over and needed some fresh fillets - and Taney provided!! Fish were biting good today - got down to the docks early (about 4:00 am) and had a limit of five by 6:15! Three of em were smallish rainbows, but two were decent browns caught on brown 1/16 oz. jigs bounced off the bottom. Bite was real hard two on the jigs (put out two rods with powerbait, and jig fished with the third). I'll definitely be down again later this week! Fished up in the trophy area later and caught several rainbows on smoke curly tailed grubs, including one 20 incher! Whata day!! Hooked on in the gills and he didn't make it, so I ended up keeping him. Fish the grubs real slow and steady - I've found the Berkley scented ones work best! Cheers!

We talk politics when we debate about a law or regulation from MDC - a government entity. I'm all for debating policy, as it pertains to fishing. I'm not for smearing politicians like Barack. It's productive to debate policy without getting involved in personal attacks on the people who create the policy. We have the power of the vote to change the people who make the policy. The state and local govts like the tourism dollars. The federal govt likes the clean energy. State/Local interests vs. Federal. It was intended that State interests would win out when our country was founded. This is now not the case.

Nice Rainbow Caught Off Dock This Morning
Fly_Guy replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
Hahaha - if it makes you feel any better, I can say the same - my biggest trout - 4.5 lbs from Taney. However, the ones that got away coulda ate that one for breakfast!! Seeing people with these monster fish pics makes me say... "hmmph" -
Haha - now that's a fisherman! They say some people fish all their lives without realizing its not the fish they are after - I say hogwash - I'm after the fish. Otherwize I'd take up golf. I have never owned a rod that costed more than 35 dollars (except my one fly rod). I lose them and break them too quickly. I snapped the tip off of my favorite rod i've ever owned the other day though - my light action Berkley Lightning Rod - the style before the current one.

Just got around to reading the reponses - almost fainted when you first posted Bman - I was sure I was going to end up in a cell next to the guy who steals fishing equipment from tourney boats and sells it on eBay! Glad y'all cleared that up - I know it is a rule for trout parks, but I never thought to even consider the rule may apply to other bodies of water - I'm glad it doesn't in this case, but it's good to know for sure! I've had to jump in after a rod twice - both times the culprit was a catfish. The rod I recovered had a 31" channel cat on it. The rod I didn't had a 68" channel cat on it (didnt see it of course, but some advanced math and physics involving the velocity and acceleration of the rod leaving the dock gives me a good estimate. It's a simple enough calculation for us fishermen However, the water wasn't 60 degees!! Brrr!! That had better of been a nice rod! (or trout) I can understand why trout parks impose the limit-out-and-stop-fishing rule. There are enough kids around just trying to catch a few fish to put a smile on their face, that anything to decrease the number of educated, sore-jawed fish is useful. One technical rule - and maybe lilley can help me out - If I was to get to the dock at 10:00, catch four, and clean them before midnight, could I catch and keep four more if I stayed after midnight till one or two? (If I was having some folks over who fancied fresh trout, for example)? I don't know if it is four per day, or four per 24 hour period. (Although it would be a pretty hard-core agent who would be checking my fisht at midnight I would imagine ... Dudley Dooright of the water patrol...)

Strangest thing happened to me the other day - Three times now i've gotten up at 2 am, gotten down to the docks by 3:30 (after a soda pick-me-up and two hotdogs at the hwy14/hwy65 QT [side note within a side note - how come QT serves hotdogs at 2:45am, but not breakfast sandwiches?? What kind of crazy fool eats hotdogs at 2:45am?...besides me apparently]) ANYWAY, got down to the dock, had limit of 4 fish and cleaned by 6 or so, and was at the dam early to fly the day away. Good fun, but a long, long day! T'other day though, my fourth fish had eaten the powerbait from both of my rods! Whilst I dozed, the crazy fish bit and swallowed one pair of eggs, swam upstream, and ate the other pair!! You would think that the string dangling from his mouth would've dissuaded him from that second pair, eh? I guess those Gulp eggs ARE powerful! Has this happened to other people? I though it was pretty ridiculous (as I salvaged my precious hook from somewhere around his small intestine). As I read it, that story isn't quite as dramatic and incredible as it seemed at the time. So I may as well tell you that after that, I saved a bus full of orphans from falling off the Table Rock Dam....WITH MIND BULLETS!!! There. That makes it a little more entertaining.

Now dat rite der is some gud filleys! Nice one! -
The crippled giraffe says "I need a drink with a long straw - bad neck." The barman says "I have it when animals try to speak human language. Order like you would if you were talking to another giraffe!" The giraffe shuggs and makes several breying sounds. "That's better" says the the barman, and gives the giraffe a drink with a long straw. The polar bear says "I'll be needing extra ice" The barman says "I have it when animals try to speak human language. Order like you would if you were talking to another polar bear!" The bear says "Roar, roar, roar roar roar". "That's better" says the barman, and gives the polar bear a drink with extra ice. The mouse says "I just need a thimble full" The barman says "I have it when animals try to speak human language. Order like you would if you were talking to another mouse!" The mouse says "squeek, squeek squeek!" "That's better" says the barman, and gives the mouse a thimble of ale. The barman then turns to the blond and says, "Now what can I get you, sweetie?" The blond casts a nervous glance toward the the animals and says "Well, I was at the mall the other day and saw this cute little outfit - it looked simply devine and I had to try it on, ect..."

Or instead of a Griffeth's gnat, you could try a Griffin's gnat it's late...or early...
-
I've caught easy 25 fish a day with two flies - a #20 black ant (or griffeth's gnat), and a #14 crackleback. I usually tie a green body with some glitter in it, with either a brown or black hackle. Twitch the crackleback right under the surface. Land and drift the ant. Tiny tiny (size 22-24) anyflies will also draw lots of takes (but lots of misses). The ant, btw, works on those sunny taneycomo days when nothing is biting as well.

Y'all sound like a bunch of babies (no offense to any babies reading). Bill, anyone who PMs you complaining about what free advice (often worth what you pay for it) a guide posted needs to be deleted from you 'in' box. Don't even bother answering (or copy and paste a prepared answer for such people).

One unit is about all I'll wade in. two or more I'll be at the outlets with the masses and the big trout. I don't know if trout relate to structure at all, but I waded waist deep with one unit or two (fast flow anyway) on a hot sunny day lately, and caught 14 trout floating a san juan past a group of rocks in about 6 feet of water. I would suggest looking for areas that will be shallow and are casting distance from some sort of structure (rock or stump or big drop off) when there is no generation. That's what I did - found an area that I was able to get out a ways, down round the rebar hole. I am wondering how trout relate to structure (in a related thread), and if breaks in current like this are more likely to actually hold fish in heavy current. Or do trout continually prowl like a walleye would?

The smallmouth on my avatar came out of taney - around 5 lbs or so.

Don't get to fish as much as I'd like. I've caught a 24" bow, but that's about as big as I've landed. Had a couple get away that were nice tho. (of course ) I'd like to say a hearty "Nice fish!!" to all who have posted. Cricket and I will chew on some envy for a while, and y'all can go back and see if they grew on you.
