Well I didn't but got to net a 10#'er on the Sac above 82 highway bridge last Tuesday. Myself and fishing partner were up the river maybe 6 to 7 miles catching some white bass and a few crappie when he hooked this one on a swimming minnow up against a river bank, wasn't very deep right along the bank but the wind was blowing on there pretty good. Didn't have a camera so no pictures, 28 inches long and weighed lust under 10 on boat scales. Those 3" swimming minnows have become the No. 1 bait in my boat! We did get a limit of very nice whites, 10 crappies, and we both limited out on drum!

I'm not from that area but fish the Sac a lot in the spring and fall. What do you like to fish for and how do you go about it?
-
Well hoglaw how did the walleye fishing go? Any whites up the river yet?

I'm with you guys looks like bait casting gear to me, there will be some more discussion about this I want to see the fly rod he was using, maybe his idea and my idea of a fly rod is two different things.
-
Wow that was a fast answer I don't think that he needs one that bad. Thanks for the info and web site, with the weather the way it is for the rest of the week I may try to make a simpler one just to see how well it would work. Thanks again!

I was sitting at the local coffee shop a couple days ago and the discussion got around to fly-fishing for crappie. A older fellow made the remark that he sure wished that he had some more trix-orenas, best flyrod lure he'd ever seen. He couldn't quite remember exactly what they looked like or how it was spelled, I get that it was a small flat spoon, single hook with either a small spinner or a couple of blades on the tail end and that he put a pork flystrip on that. I've been looking around for it and can't find it. I did have a spoon made by Hildbrant that is close but wasn't quite right, by him. Does any know of such a lure or have a picture of it, if I can get my hands on one he's going fly fishing again, I hope at least he won't have any excuses!

A friend of mine went Sunday afternoon, fished out of a boat mostly in the East Bledsoe area on the slack water side below Truman dam and picked up 5 whites a few crappie and one small walleye, used Berkly Gulp minnows on a jig head.
-
Just something that I thought about in the years past I have been told by local oldtimer to use hornyhead minnows. He just used a straight hook and enough split shot to get to the bottom in the deeper holes. You'll have to trap these yourself as that you can't buy them, he trapped his in small streams in the area and don't use slickies (small store bought minners, I think} Anyway for what that is worth Good luck! Would like to hear how all of this turns out.

I would say absolutly not, the upper most area that I was talking about is probably about a 1/4 mile down steam from there. About 6 to 8 years ago I caught a 7.5 about 1/2 mile down from there and have seen bigger! The last time I was on the river the lake was 10' low and couldn't get that far up, hope this spring things will be half way normal. Good luck!

hoglaw do you know where bull holler is? stewert bottom? Caught walleyes in both areas, years ago you could turn on the state line and go down to a gate with a box on it put a dollar in the box and drive on down to the river which wouild be just a little ways south of the state line, don't know if that is still available or not? Could you give me directions to the romp hole, I'm just trying to get a fix on its location, I looked through some of Arkansas state web sites and couldn't find it.
-
Hoglaw I don't know where the romp hole is, is it close to the area called White Bass estates? I haven't been that far up in several years and the last time I was there by white bass estates there wasn't a ramp there. Anyway the best wallleye fishing that I have had has been down river from there to the long hole called the Corps Bluff, which is north of the state line around the corner going east and west and before you get to 86 highway bridge and there will probably be big boats there. Hope this makes sense, best baits for me has been #7 Shad Rap in natural shad color and grey Road Runners, and a few on Rattling Raps same color, which they don't make anymore! Good luck!

20 dollars? You must not have fished there much! I bet that it would scare you to know how much equipment has been lost down there. I know that I have lost a ton of it myself and I pour my own jigs. What did that hybrid weight, it looks like a good'un, you want to watch out handling the spoonies too much, I saw a guy get a ticket for having it out of the water. The agents watch that area pretty close and are reall sneaky!

Don't know anything about Smithville but there are walleyes below Truman now! They hve been there for a while, best fishing is when the Corps is running water, cloudy, windy, raining days or night. They were being caught on Rogues slow rolled don't know if that pattern is still holding up, swimtail plastics on a jig slow rolled across the bottom is a favorite, charteuse is the best color. Jig and minnow works too. Take lots of cheap jigs and plastics as that is a mean rocky nasty bottom! Got to be careful or you just might hook up with a big hybred, or ole catfish, crappie, white bass. lots of gar and spoonbill are fun too! Take extra line too, try it, it's an experience! Hope this helps and good luck!

I use to fish that area a lot 15 to 25 years ago but work and stuff has keep me away. Made it down there three years ago but the lake was 10' low, 2 years ago it got down to 15*, last year it was it was 15' high! Maybe this year will be ok? I have caught some eyes there, no expert, mainly trolling and sure is some good white bass fishing if you can catch the water right. Would you have a number for the Kings River Outfitters? Appreciate the info.

Thank you very much for the reports, it sure helps a guy that lives about 3 hours away from wasting a trip! Thanks again very much!

Caught one smally that weighted 3 lbs. probably 25 years ago on the James on a crankbait. I haven't even been in a canoe for 15 years, so wouldn't have any idea what is going on now! Good luck hope that you can find some that big, and that one was released, have always turned the smallies back, anything that pretty and has that much spirit needs to fight again!

Longear Sunfish In Kansas City Vicinity?
shaker replied to swellcat's topic in General Angling Discussion
Been fishing around the area for nearly 50 years and have never seen one, lots of other sun fishes including redears but no long ears. That doesn't mean that they're not hear, I just haven't seen one on the Mo. side. -
Where is K dock located?

Great report! We don't hear much about Truman fishing, not near enough anyway. I went to the Sac River Monday and caught a lot of small whites and crappie, water temps were about 65 to 67. Did end up with four nice crappie and two nice whites. this area should get better as the water temps drop into the 50's and we don't get a major flood out of this rain headed this way. Good Luck!
-
Check out Sterettcreek.com, they have the best fishing report own the lake. Sometimes Bucksaw.com puts one out. Good luck, the fishing should be great!
-
Don't think so, it's the cool nights that we have been having. I was on the lower Grand Wednesday, the moring temps were 78 and by afternoon it came up to 84. Did catch some nice crappie shallow on the flats.
-
Glad to hear someone catching some whites, was down last week fishing around G4 but could only catch a few small whites mostly on swinnin minnows and a small swimbait, tried trolling but could only catch smaller whites.

Best Smallmouth Kind Of Ozark Stream Nearest To Kc
shaker replied to jscheetz's topic in General Angling Discussion
The smallies that I caught were around the H highway access and that was in the springtime but it all looks good to me. I was throwing a roostertail at the time, but I would think that it would be great flyfishing, lots of pools and gravel bars and very wadeable depending on the water level of course. Its been 4 to 5 years since I've been there and remember that the first one that I caught really suprised me as I didn't have any idea that they were there, I didn't catch great numbers of them and they weren't all that big, but they sure are fun!
