I second the Al Capbell beginner fly tying link. It was really helpful to me when I got back into tying as an adult. Another good source for videos is The Anglers Net. Some good videos by some skilled tyers. Look in their Archives. That site also has some cool videos and some nice guys from back east where Im from origionally. I post on there occasionally to give them a taste of flyfishing in the midwest. http://www.theanglersnet.com/Fly-Tying-Vid...x.asp?section=6

Musky like colder water and are more active in the spring and the fall. Most of my musky on Pomme have come while bass fishing, mostly with crankbaits(suspended Rouges) or surface plugs (esp. Zara Spook), and the most and the largest have been in the spring, while the bass are in pre spawn, Like now, or in the fall when everything is on the feed, and the white bass are on the windy points. Pomme is a jewel of a lake with some nice fish. It is a very pretty lake that gets mostly local traffic and gets passed over for the bigger lakes which is alright with everyone who fishes it. Good luck and let us know if you catch any on fly. That would be an experience!

I use those little episodes as examples for my kids as how not to behave, Some people really do have no clue, they are extremely hard to tolerate, but that is our burden. Take pitty on the unenlightened, and give them plenty of distance.

Winter Camping
redbird replied to ozark trout fisher's topic in Lodging, Camping, Kayaking and Caoneing
darn! I remember when I was a kid I thought trolling was how old people fished! I dont like some of the ways the world changes. -
Check out this video, serious drool material! When you first get there you may have to scroll down and stop the February Spey video So you dont have to listen to Pink floyd and the other music together. http://blogs.timesunion.com/flyfishing/

I dont think Muskies accidentally grab anything. And if you fish Pomme enough you will have a musky encounter. Ive had them nab bass that were chasing my zara spook, Ive caught them fishing for bass, Ive caught them fishing for them, Ive had more than I can remember break me off, Ive had them turn away from a lure at the boat and splash (and scare the crap out of me). I once saw my dad turn one on one of those tiny poppers that you fish for bluegill with. That lake is full of them, and other fish too!

The signs are a good Idea. Maybe they will give the poachers the idea that there are people who care whether or not they poach and are willing to drop a dime on them. Also in one of the posts earlier someone mentioned trash cans. By the benches would be a great idea, but the City would have to pay someone to empty them, and from the looks of the toilet in the park johnny on the spot last time I was down, I dont think it gets emptied more that a couple times a year. Although on a good note it did get cleaned that day Tyler and I were down there early this month. That was our lunch time entertainment as we watched 5 guys discuss and finally tackle it with disgust. We were at a safe distance at the covered picnic tables and up wind I might ad or another location may have been chosen for lunch.

Nice view of the Golden Gate Bridge, do they have one of those over the NFOW? Nice fish too Brian!

Is Nels still the greenskeeper out there. I went through my chef apprenticeship at Loch Loyd about 12 years ago. There are some pretty big woods around there, Unfortunately they are getting smaller all the time.

Yes Im certain these pics are from Missouri. What is errant about them is that they were actually taken in Crane just off the creek, about 300 yards downstream of the ball park.

Igfa Line Class World Record White Bass

Nice whites. Id like to catch a mess of those on fly! -
My 11 year old and I fished Hickory today. We started about 4 holes upstream from the Hwy 60 bridge and Tyler nailed 2 right off the bat in a great looking deep fast hole on a rooster tail ,which encouraged me, because all reports had not many fish downsteam of the ball fields. (of course as most fishing trips with the boys I worry more about them catching fish at first than me) . Well we didnt see another trout between there and the low water bridge, but some great looking water (And a Dan Quisenberry 44oz styro cup, either very old or there was an old timer special at faststop). After lunch I missed a few between the low water and the foot bridge, and after donating 3 zebra midges in 15 minutes to the trees I had had enough. What a nice day to be out, any day on the water is better than most other things you could be doing. Hickory could be better, but it is what it is, and there will probably be years where the stocking seems better than others. Everyone has budgets to meet, and maybe things were tighter at the end of this year than last, possibly it will pick up as we move into a new year and start a new budget. Just a hypothesis. As for the trash It looks like most other city parks you could visit throughout the state. The locals probably dont think of it with the respect that those of us that drive over 2 hours to enjoy thier back yard. And those that do leave trash probably have backyards that none of us would like to see. I shall return and I will catch trout on fly, I dont give up that easy.

"He told us about Christ's disciples being fisherman, and we were left to assume...that all great fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly fisherman and that John, the favorite, was a dry-fly fisherman." - Norman Maclean-A River Runs Through It "You'll hear people say that birth is a miracle and death is a tragedy, but a sportsman eventually comes to see that anything that happens every day is just plain ordinary. Life is just life, and even brook trout get the blues." -John Gierach These two and others get me through the many hours of labor and toil I must spend away from fishing, so that I may continue fishing at a later time.

I can definately understand the leach thing working. I wet waded Hickory back in July and found a big fat momma on my ankle. When I pulled her off, out came all the babies. Grossed out my wife real good, my boys thought it was cool.

Tim, I sure appreciate all of the info you share about fishing. I have learned a ton by reading your posts. As for Crane I have fished there once a couple weeks ago, and I dont think I did any harm. I picked up some trash, and found a hardly used bottle of floatant (score! because I misplace a couple of these a year) Also I didnt catch any of those illusive trout, so I dont think I harmed them in any way. They are very wary, and that is the allure of fishing for them. I will not fish Crane often, but I plan on trying until I at least catch some! I will use the good ethics of a sportsman that I was brought up with. I will gently nudge those that I see not behaving in such a manner. We are all responsible for our waters. If every one of us picks up a can or couple pieces of paper each time we go, use some common good sense when fishing , and follow the law when we fish, our waters and our fish will continue to thrive. (Unless they are downstream of a pig farm) I dont think Crane will become overrun by fishermen, it is not what many fishermen are looking for. It is a challenge. It is a bit off the beaten path, and It is small. But there are more fishermen than there used to be, and I understand that it is never an easy pill to swallow when more of them fish an area that for the most part has been overlooked. Even a well kept secret is never kept forever. But when that secret is public land, it is to be expected that others will find it and fish it. Lets all hope that they are all like the ones who have posted in this thread. Because what I see is that though some of us disagree with one another, we all care very deeply for our sport and the waters we fish. I wish all of you a Merry Christmas, and lots of good fishing in the New Year!

I drove a white 99 cutlass. When I started in the park I worked my way upstream away from the bridge, then after lunch I went to the far end of the ball fields before getting on the creek. I was hoping with the approaching weather they might be a little more turned on than they were, but maybe it was my fly tying skills. I am a stubborn one though, and will probably continue to force feed them my flies until I can get one to eat one. Then again I could pick a less wary group of subjects to try them on too. Im thinking of trying out Roaring River the week after next with my son.

Great report! Glad to here you guys got into them so well. Looking back over the last 36 hours it is almost like they new something was coming. Nature is amazing like that, the fish, the deer, the birds they all know.

Where did you fish? I was down yesterday too, but I started in the park and worked my way upstream until lunch. After lunch I fished down from the ball fields for a couple of hours. It was my first time down and I got the big skunk, but saw lots of fish and had a great time trying to sneak up on them. They sure are spooky. I wish I would have gone with the spinning rod and not worried about the fly on my first trip. Live and learn. What a pretty creek!

I am planning on fishing Crane soon. I hope that is okay with most people. Anyway, it looks to be a smaller creek, are hip waders do-able, or do I want to bring my chest waders? I dont get too daring in new places until I get to know them. I promise I wont break any rules and Ill try not to scare the feesh too much, as long as they dont look at me anyway. And if I see any trash Ill pick it up and take it with me, as long as it is smaller than a washing machine.

That would be interesting to find out. I may hit Crane this Sat. unless the stock this week. I may not have much luck, but at least I will know Im casting to fish.

Thanks Buzz. I appreciate all of the info you guys share on this site. I am a student of the game and can use all of the help I can get. Bill
