  1. speaking of bone creek -- we stopped by there one time on the way to kc. it looks nice, but didn't like all the gravel but oh well. i think we'll try it next -- we moved to the west side of town, so i've been trying new places in kansas this summer. we can spit and practically be in ks. any tips for me and the boys at bone creek? i saw they had some flooded timber. we saw one boat fishing along the dam, and another that looked like it had been up the creek to the right quite a ways when we were there before. we don't really care what we catch...just fish for fun. thanks
  2. after wanting to go to big hill for a couple years...finally bit the bullet and took the boys (7 and 5) on saturday. we had a good time. the lake is nice...the facilities are great. saw lots of wildlife. water was 72 degrees. but we didn't catch very many fish... we put in at timer hill. we took the boat lane towards the dam, and about half way we moved into the timber on the right. we tried minnows in the brush about 16 foot deep, about 12 foot deep and again in about 8 foot of water. we just kept moving shallower thinking we'd run into them eventually, but never did. we had zero luck on crappie, and only a couple of dink bass. after that...we got out of the brush. luckily i might add. there is a ton of brush. we tried a main lake point...only caught one decent bass on a football jig. i'd really like to call the lake home...it seems off the beaten path. the ride out is super-peaceful. we ate dinner at a drive-in in altamont (good food by the way). we didn't get home til almost 10...but for the effort we put in we'd have like to catch a few more fish. we never went above timber hill ramp...maybe we should have, but we kind of ran out of time. if anyone could steer me in a direction or offer some tips i would appreciate it. thanks
  3. i just bought a remington model 788 youth model in 243...the stock isn't cut. appears to be a factory model. paid 329 for it. what do you think? has the 22 inch barrel and a old scope. serial number traces back to one of the earliest years.
  4. i caught the show too. the oldest boy was on me about when can we go to rolf. i'd bet we'll be seeing you soon. kudos

    Undercliff

i guess i've been out of the loop, but it was good to know that the undercliff campground is back open...i took the boys out there today for a couple hours. caught a couple fish...goggle eye mostly. but also a nice bass on a soft plastic in a wood pile under the bridge, and a few dink bluegill on worms. caught quite a few crawdads...and a softshell turtle. water wasn't as clear as i thought it would be -- glad the campground is back open. it's a great place to take the kids.
  6. ya, me too. his reports of 10 lb brown trout, and sport bass galore inspired me to try the lower lake. he should get a job at the chamber of commerce for rockaway beach. we've taken a family vacation the last two fourth of july's in forsythe because of him. the lower lake has good family fishing...without the crowd
  7. ya, apple is the brand name. here's some pics -- don't mind the water/dirt. it's been leaning up against the barn for a while. looks good. it does have my name stenciled on it up front. i used to use it at a private lake, so i put my name on it to keep other members honest. it's small right by the grab hold in the front of the boat. thanks
  8. i liked the first one so much that i bought another one...but i haven't used it this year. it's the same thing only a little nicer...has two swivel seats. it's painted camouflage. $300 -- no title also have an old 14 foot apple jon boat...has a leak on the bottom, near the transom. small puncture hole. would be an easy fix. used only once this year -- fixing the waterfall in my neighbors pool. $200 or best offer -- has a title just trying to clean up the yard a little -- thanks
  9. thanks, not much to add but we just got back from a couple days. i fished in zone 1 with a john deere early, then switched to a #10 black beetle once the wind and sun came up. lots of fish in our three days. water is clear and low. the CCC lodge is closed...you buy your daily tag at the new shop...which is directly beneath the new lodge --- just across the dry hollow bridge. I'd like to give a shout out to tim from tim's fly shop. he's got a great shop, and a helpful attitude. thanks
  10. we just got back from 5 days on the lower end. water is hot and dirty. water temp from rockaway to the dam is pushing 80. the trout are stressed but they're still down there. early mornings and late in the evenings was the best fishing. had to go all the way to the landing practically to find 65 degree water. the water in the monkey island area to lilley's looked really good. clear and cold. but by the time we got up there the boys were pretty much worn out so we didn't stay too long. bass and perch fishing was only fair. nevertheless...good times
  11. we'll be there for 5 days in a day or two. love to catch the trout with the boys, but plan to do a little bass fishing on the lower end. is there a top-water bite in the morning in the sloughs?
  12. i took a chance and took the boys to big brutus this morning. they caught a couple small bass on minnows. it was our first time to try the pits. big brutus looks like the empire state building from the water. we saw six or eight big bucks swimming across the pits. it was awesome. we were only about 30 yards from them. they jumped in and swam to the other side. i swear it was like the caribou migration on the discovery channel. the pits were nice but it was pretty windy, and hard to get out of it with the way the pits were dug. probably should have taken them to grand and went after white bass...but we overslept...nevertheless, it was a good day to be a dad!
  13. thanks, we'll try the par 3 course in branson...sounds perfect
  14. thanks, i've driven past bone creek. looks pretty nice but i don't like all the gravel to get to it but if i get my ks license i'll try it. what about the pits in columbus...you ever fish those?
  15. anybody ever fish it? i've heard it's a nice lake, lots of timber and clear water, but i've never seen it. debating getting my ks license...it's closer to the house than anything except grand.
  16. ok, thanks for the info. maybe we'll just go for mini-golf in forsyth...any tough tracks?
  17. i was hoping for something a little more off the beaten path...something where i might take the family, and not have to worry about pace of play.
  18. we're coming down in a couple of weeks...was wondering if there's a golf course in forsyth? i see on the web where there's suppose to be one...but i also see where it's closed. any of you locals like playing golf -- if so where? thanks

    Boat Ramps

i'd say the city ramp off 16th street. as your coming north out of grove -- about a mile from the mcdonalds -- you'll see a sign on the right hand side. way before sailboat bridge. it's in wolf creek, so just follow the cove out and go under the bridge. i've heard that you can take a straight line from the bridge to martin's landing, but i'd play it safe and go around the island with the marker on it -- water is shallow and lots of debris from a rock quarry between the bridge and martin's landing. you could also try terra miranda -- which is just down the road from martin's landing, but hardly any parking. here's a link from ivan's website with the ramps http://www.grandfishingreport.com/pgs/lake.../rampstatus.htm
  21. I want to take my little boys fishing this weekend, just curious if anyone has been, and if the bluegill are on their beds?
  22. I'll second bill babler...been with him on both lakes and caught lots of fish both times and learned something each trip
  23. i didn't links and they may be telling you the same thing...but this weekend is supposed to be the best fishing all year according to a buddy of mine that follows such things
  24. like many -- mine has to do with forgetting the plug -- we were staying at trout hollow and using the ramp at riverlake. i had backed my ranger in...jumped in it and started it up. i backed the boat off the trl and into the middle of the lake, and waved to my father in-law who was to take the truck back to trout hollow and then i'd come pick him up. about the time he cleared the ramp...i look down and the floor is full of water. i panicked...gun the ranger to get it back to the ramp and jumped in. laying on my back with all my clothes on trying to find the hole to put the plug in. there was a pontoon boat full of people fishing about 50 yards from me.
