Thanks for all the info here guys, I didn't mean to hi-jack a big fish story, but hope to post a pic. of one myself in a couple of weeks.

Thanks Justin and Ham for the info. I have no problem catching them with the jigs I tie just looking for something else for my wife to throw. ( she is really stuck on the R-tails and in a pinch, sometimes the good ol rebel craw ) I think I have pretty much everything I like to use along with a truck load of the Rooster-tails for her, so we should be good to go. I am going to need to tie up a few more of my Marabou jigs but that shouldn't take long. I do have a large selection of 1/32 and some 1/16 oz, but thinking I might tie up some 1/8 just in case the water is moving. Good idea? Thanks again guys and looking forward to the 18th at Trout Island

I'm seeing a lot of talk about this "zig jig".... I have never used one. I do tie my own jigs and have for years... seem to work for me. I did look the zig up and found their site. Seems to have a little different action than what I make up. Question is, are they really any different than any other jigs? I tend to stick to the fly rod but my wife and I are heading down to the NFTW in few weeks and she only uses a spinning rod. She does fairly well with a rooster-tail and I have tried to get her to throw jigs, but like the fly rod, she feels that there's just to much going on all at once with a jig and can't feel the bite. Is this zig jig any easer to use over a normal jig?

Zig jig? Looking forward to seeing the Lodge for the first time over Easter this year, hope they are still biting

My wife and I just did a trip from Greer to Whitten last weekend. Water is up just alittle bit but it made the white water very manageable loaded with camping gear. Id stay to the right at Maty Decker as we floated right through. Any questionable riffels we walked with no problems, and we walk most so we could fish the area. Caught alot of fish all day, every day, but got to get deep. There on the bottom and do not like to come up much to bite. The bugs how-ever will bite high, low,, morning and night. Take some "OFF" and, or bug candles. Also there are sand fleas in the gravel, again use "off" if not in waders. We had a GREAT trip floating the 11 point this year and will be doing it again next year,

Just checked the river levels and looks to be high still. My wife is trying to talk me into doing a fish/camp trip from Greer to Whitten sometime early Sept. Anyone get a look at the stream or get a line wet, Please let me know what ya find.

Rod Storage In A Canoe
lizard replied to tjulianc's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
I use thin wall pvc pipe. keeps everything in the boat and the rods are protected from the snags -
I think I'll leave that one alone --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well my wife wanted to head back down to Tan Vat Sunday and see If the fishing was as good now as it was 2 weeks ago. I told her we might try a new way, "the back door" just to see if it was any faster. From my properity on Dry Creek in Steelville, we always take 19 to Salem and then out 32 to 119 on in to the park. Hwy 19 is very curvey and up & down the hills, then 32 and 119 always seemed to be a slow-go. Just seems to take a long time to get there. When leaving out of the St. Louis area, 44 to Rolla, to Licking, seemed to be an easy drive. Hence I decided to time 2 different ways this time. I might try to a 3ed some time in the future, but I dont think its that nessesary as the "back Door" approch impressed me. We took 44 down to St.James and thats where I started the clock. From St. J to Salem I had 27.5 miles and it took 31 mins. Salem to Tan Vat, 20 miles and 29 mins. Total =47.5 miles and 51 mins, Thought to myself, not bad, Gene knows his stuff, he was right. Fished most of the day around the "rock garden" area and had a fairly good day, not as good as last time but caught plenty of average sized bows mainly nymphing with one nice brown on a dry in the afternoon. 5:30 and time to head home via Rolla. From Tan Vat to Licking,(vv to 137) 16 miles and 18 mins. Licking to Rolla, 35 miles and 39 mins. Rolla to St. James, 9 miles and 8 mins. Totals = 60 miles and 65 mins Gene , my hats off to you, you were right, I bow my head, Thanks for getting me to go fishing

Rolla is 10 - 15 min. faster but 19 is not as boring a drive
-
spinning gear is allowed also. Just no soft plastic or bait

Ain't gota clue!

I dont beleave you'll have any problems down there, just stay to the path down to the river, and enjoy your day. The water just about right for wading so you shouldn't need to walk any banks to get around any deep holes. Good luck and let us know how ya did.

Well Mr. Bluewater you were right. I did another search with those two words and found the thread you spoke of. so you might reread it, here it is... http://ozarkanglers.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=16809&st=0&p=105260&hl=Cardiac%20Landowner&fromsearch=1&#entry105260

Strange, I did a search and didn't find anything on the landowner. Can you point my to one or two posts there Mr. Bluewater

I dont know why your saying that about John and Sharen. I fish that part of the stream often and they both are always nice to me. I can only guess that you may have had a run-in there with them or that you belive what someone else told you about them. Then again, I too am a local properity owner as they and sometimes we dont take well to city folks and there actions.I'm not realy sure why one would be tresspassing on there properity anyway. The road goes right down too the field and on out to the river. Its a very good hole right there. The fish are in the water... not in the woods, why would I be in the woods?

are you saying that I trespass, or that you do when nobodys looking
-
My wife and I went down last monday. Started a little late and didn't do very well at all. Got on the water about 11 am, fished the bottom of the hole right at the acc. spot and caught 2 bows, one on Dons crawdad, the other my wife got on a large rooster tail. Walked up stream to the cabin hole, (its not there anymore) and found another 16" there. Thats all we were able to get.

Eric congrats on the new arrival and hope all is well with you and the family. I think that most feel that its a good idea to buy the stamp if they are going to fish for trout and do, I just don't think I should be told to do so. I enjoy fishing with a fly rod. My wife likes the spinning gear. Its just a preference. I don't like watching people bate fishing just because I feel they are not catching fish, rather the fish are catching them. With that said I've never told someone not to bate fish just because of my views. I have carried a stamp every year for the past 15 as my wife and son have, so as a family that $21 from us. Rarely do we keep a fish, and where I go, I don't need a stamp. As some know I own property on a private trout stream. The mdc has not stock it in over 40 years or done anything in helping the "water-shed". Its private, so they can't. I do still support there efferts as I fish elsewhere in the state. Pleae just don't tell me I have, should, or need to do so.
-
If Someone were to ask me if she needed an additional license on top of her regular license to fish for trout, and I would have gave a blanket answer, it would be no, unless you want to keep a legal fish. Key word being needed. I might add to it that the funds obtained from a stamp improves trout fishing in the state there-fore is a good idea. I would never tell someone that they need or have to have one, unless illegally fishing. Taney, winter cc

I see we have another thread that got Hy-jack here. There is nothing illegal (the subject of the poster )about having or not having a trout permit while fishing on the crane (contrary to eric's first post, Now it your second post when:fisfinwrench politely clarified the reg, you resorted to name-calling and advising folks to keep maybe illegal fish ( well at least were on subject). Now in your 3ed post is where I feel you might be crossing that line. In reading it, you seem to be trying to be-little "Sharps" and impose your opinion upon the trout fishing public. I dont have a problem with your opinion, I have a problem with the thought process that you want to force me, us, to conform to your idea of right and wrong. Flysmally said it best I think with.."Same as with catch & release. It's your decision and you should have the right to choose no matter what anyone tells you. I buy a trout stamp so I can fish the catch and release seasons in the trout parks. If I didn't need it there or for my few trips to Taney I would probably not buy one. Opinions are just that, an opinion. As long as no one is doing anything illegal, we shouldn't act like a bunch of assholes just because we don't agree. And Eric, please don't take this personal. My comments stem from a lot of posts that have been showing up lately. Why can't we just tell someone that we disagree with their position and politely move on. Just my 2 cents, agree or not its not any more than an opinion
