Which is more important???
Brian K. Shaffer replied to Phil Lilley's topic in General Bass Fishing Discussions
I went with Action (of course) then Size. Size matters when dealing with bass and baitfish. I used baitfish as an example.. as I know they eat other stuff, crawfish and other whatnot (dragonflies.. damsel flies.. mice.. worms ?!?!) But your bigger bass will target injured baitfish at dusk and dawn within thier area... so I would go with a big fly or lure with lots of action and lots of ability to push water and make sound and resemble closely enough to trigger a strike. This is my opinion on bass fishing with mainly flys.. and I know I am probably wrong.. so be it. I'll learn new techiniques in time. screaming reels - Brian -
Thoughtful Fly Poll
Brian K. Shaffer replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
I throw color right out the window.. as I am color blind to a pretty good degree. Red is Green is Brown. Blue and Purple are identical. I see shades of these colors but I could never tell you what they are. So for me, color is out.. and for the record.. I have caught trout on blue midges. Shape ranks up there pretty high.. as it is about equal to size. Size is the key to running a correct setup. I usually start from the size 20 range and work backward. Midge dropper in size 20 on 6x, scud or sowbug in size 14 on 4x or 5x and the indicator placed where ever I need to succesfully get a good drag free snag free drift. So for me, I would have included Conditions as a 4th element. If it is sunny one day and foul the next.. I will change up my rig altogether. screaming reels - Briam -
Bruce - Glad 'ya made it over! I have been dealing with Bruce since the good old days.. no worries on his stuff at all. Sometimes, he even sells some real hand tied flies too.. not all from that one guy in prison who ties with his feet. Just kidding. best fishes - Brian

Cleaning my ultralight spinning reels
Brian K. Shaffer replied to Seth's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
Seth - I would do as you thought / clean with soapy water, but do use Dove. Lube with a small shot of 3n1 oil.. its still the best. Continue rubbing reels down with a guncloth. best fishes - Brian -

Roark Creek / Branson
Brian K. Shaffer replied to Brian K. Shaffer's topic in Wild Trout Creeks & Streams
Lots of water running thru there now.. so its gonna be a good spring! The water at the trestle bridge by the quarry was raging and there was a tree of two lodged up against it. Hopefully some clear water stays in there so I can see the smallies! best fishes - Brian -
Bad Weather Saturday
Brian K. Shaffer replied to Brian K. Shaffer's topic in General Angling Discussion Archives
So I'm glad to report there is no damage at the hatchery or dam as I could see.. just lots of fisherman all over -- they better be prepared for the rains later today. The damage to the White House Theatre can only be seen from the back, as a whole section of the rear was torn off. There was that fiberglass insulation and 3 contractors and the metal debris all twisted laying beside them when I drove thru at around 10:30am. The new Comfort Inn on Gretna had some roof damage.. not to severe.. and across the street the nursing home there looked like it had damage.. but they are adding onto it.. so it looks like damage but its just raw materials they are currently building. A section of Shep Hill Expressway is closed as they work on the powerlines that are down.. many of them, one that I saw was sheared off at the base.. and it looks like the Best Western Branson Towers has some damage to it.. just cant tell cause the road is closed. More storms on the way today - Brian -

Bad Weather Saturday

Dano - I'm sure you know the BFD stands wait behind the complex of Wal-Mart whenever bad weather lurks. I have seen the trucks sitting up there watching like hawks to see anything out of the ordinary. I sat there one time with them.. but the rain got too hard for me to wait it out with no cover.. so I split to the covered bank parking lot. Pea sized hail.. its not recommended for my truck! whew - Brian -

10 inches of hail in Merriam Woods ??? goodness.. major transmission line down.. a dozen power lines snapped.. Tomorrow (( Sunday )) is supposed to be worse! WOW Brian -
I cannot wait to see the news on this storm, and to see what might have occured at Taney up by the dam. I am downtown at around 4:30.. and after a few blinks of the lights.. I close out windows and turn off the computer.. no less than 2 minutes later the power goes out - FOR 3 and half hours! I have heard rumors of some heavy damage to a few structures; The White House Theatre, a part of Silver Dollar City, some other spots in Kimberling had damage.. but the news tonight will show it all. WOW - some reports by my mom of marble sized hail.. and 2 miles north of Branson a policeman reported of golf ball sized hail literally filling or covering the streets. *<( may parents are still out of power at 9:30pm and they are accross from K-Mart )>* what a storm - Brian

Odd.. but I don't get it guys. I would need more information than just - it was here before the trout we stocked - for me to think it doesnt have a negative impact on the fish themselves. For the record - I have knowingly killed only three things in trout waters, in the order of most to least : Trout Sucker 2 Lamprey Eel So there you have it.. my impact on the whole entire situation. best fishes - Brian

? Guess this fly game ?
Brian K. Shaffer replied to Brian K. Shaffer's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
The Meat Whistle is right motrout, and mizzou you got more than a few too. Check them eggs with the neat-o painted weighted leadeyes in the new Cabela's catalog. Here are a few more : 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Believe me guys.. these are much tougher !! best fishes - Brian -
Why Taneycomo though ? Why not a Wednesday tournament at Roaring River - where the impact on the fish would be negated by the amount of catch and kill anglers ? Because no matter how hard anybody will try, there will be a mortality rate from this event. Perhaps I just wish to protect my home waters. I understand where you guys are coming from though / what with wanting another tournament and all. But how are you gonna stop non-registered people from walking uninvited into a " zoned " event area and not fishing it ? just my 02. Brian

Kern Emerger nymph
Brian K. Shaffer replied to tippet7's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
That's foam right ? Over the back ? Kind of reminds of something I have tied before only in wooly form. Looks like either deer or moose for the tail, some kind of estaz / crystal chenille or other synthetic as the body, foam tied in for the wingcase over an SLF bug dub body thorax picked out and finished off. hmmm.. But can I do it thru your website ? touche Just a joke.. no disrespect meant. Did you get your site up and running yet ? best fishes - Brian

07 march 2006 fishing report
Brian K. Shaffer replied to dp1kinobe's topic in Bennett Springs State Park
Is anyone going to go tomorrow -- looks like serious rain all day! Possibly some real heavy stuff.. so the fishing should be great! I might be hitting up Roaring River instead, though with Taney in my backyard I might just fish here.. but I am glad to see the action on the board 'cause people are going to the parks again. best fishes all - Brian -
This is a Heddon Vamp in Dace scale. (I have one, but with gold painted on eyes) This is just cool... look at that price $1.00! best fishes - Brian
