    What's Cooking?

Did you get the ‘What’s Cooking’ thread mixed up with something from a Latin wife-swapping thread elsewhere? Curious minds want to know...

  4. Well, I guess I AM familiar with at least one of John Hartford's songs.

    What's Cooking?

The gf and I have dinner every Wednesday, and my son comes over every Thursday for dinner. While he was eating carryout pizza last week he said, 'What did you and Kathy have last night?' I said steak, and he gave me the 'Whaaatttt? I haven't had steak in forever!' So, guess what we're having this Thursday?
  6. OK -- finally found the duo: Betse & Clarke. Went to their website and it said 'if you like us, then try John Hartford'. So, I got the name right, but the connection was wrong. I'm not familiar with Hartford.

    What's Cooking?

Chili looks and sounds good. No cinnamon toast—crackers or cornbread if I’m ambitious. Chicago style deep dish last night.
  9. James Taylor, on top of those mentioned. I’ve got to look up John Hartford. We had a visiting bluegrass duo at church Christmas Eve and I think I saw they were performing with John Hartford. Their name escapes me, but it was a girl in fiddle and guy in banjo

    What's Cooking?

Gut buster breakfast here, which is a rarity. Grandma’s buttermilk pancakes, real grade b maple syrup and some Amana Colonies maple bacon.

I love where this is going. Guajillo and anchos are favorites. Have seen mulato but don’t know their taste.

    What's Cooking?

Dill and carrots go together well. I also roast or steam them then hit them with a little butter and honey.

    What's Cooking?

Leftover glorified hamburger helper crap for lunch today. I went to extra trouble to make it perty for the picture.
  15. I remember momo. Felt like it was a lame attempt to capitalize on the Bigfoot hysteria to benefit the tourism-challenged state of Missery. He had about a six month run as I recall. But, it was such a stupid thing that it is remembered.

    What's Cooking?

Oh heck yeah, I know about runzas. About 15 years ago a friend of ours came back from her hometown in Nebraska with a bunch of frozen runzas. That was the first I’d heard of them, but I understood what they were when she described them. Bierocks! We’ve got a Runza in town now, but I haven’t been in a while. If your wife makes them, please share some pics or a recipe. I love the whole beef/cabbage/onion thang.

    What's Cooking?

All the old pheasant hunting pictures in the other thread got me thinking about Bierocks. I’ve mentioned them before here — an Eastern European dish that’s fairly common in western Kansas. Ground beef, cabbage, onion and a few seasonings wrapped in a dough pocket and baked. I first had them in school where our cook was a Mennonite lady from out there. Then, as I got into pheasant hunting there would be community dinners on opening weekend in the little towns and often there would be bierocks. They’re a bit involved to make, so a while back I thought - why not just do the meat etc. and serve it on a bun? I googled, and I wasn’t the first one to have the idea. Found a recipe, and have tweaked it to my liking. So... ground beef, shredded cabbage, onion, beef bouillon, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder go in a pot. Brown a little then add water and simmer until everything is soft and cooked and dried out completely. It ain’t pretty, and it ain’t gourmet, but it scratches a couple itches for me, namely beef and cabbage. I give you bierock burgers:

  25. Well, this has got me going through old pics. No such thing as off topic in this thread. Came across this one, which may be interesting to some. Found this in some chalk bluffs in Trego County, KS.
