Lost my good buddy Max yesterday. He'd been in decline for a while, but things got so bad that he was struggling to breathe and suffering, and we couldn't have that. He was the sweetest dog I've ever known. He was great with people: he just loved everybody immediately. He had a lot of energy, but he was very well-behaved. He was a good bird dog, and there are many great memories of him in the field. I especially love the memories hunting with Max and my two boys. But really, it's the memories of the everyday things that are flooding my mind now. How he tormented our older Brittany Molly when he was a pup, and how our younger Brittany Ruby tormented him when she was a pup. How he popped up off his front legs when he barked. How he had to go in circles for a couple minutes before he finally settled into his doggy bed. A few pics: The day we got Max, with ness 2.1 Max and Molly His first hunt, when he learned how water works A couple pooped bird dogs in some motel in western Kansas Max's signature 'point', with ness 2.3 With ness 2.2 Payback time. Here's Ruby! Max's last hunt, January 2021. With ness 2.3 Rest easy buddy, your suffering is over. Max A'Million 2008-2022.

Good to see your post and know you're back in the saddle, mic!

Forget chiropractors, try the vet instead! Just picked these up about an hour ago for our poor old retired bird dog Max a'Million. He likes it with a chicken Pill Pocket.

Nicely done, daughter and dad!

Pretty cool! That would sure be something if they’re able to find some. I’ve got the Behnke book that was written about 20 years ago. He mentions a sliver of hope that they could be found. They evolved in Twin Lakes and were lake dwellers. Twin Lakes was later stocked with rainbows that hybridized with the cutties, so it’s unlikely any pure ones are in there. There were yellowfin eggs sent to other areas in CO, France and Germany, but who knows what ever happened there. Like the article mentions, possibly in the Twin Lakes tributary streams or in an isolated stream or lake that was stocked.

Blue ribbon trout streams and water temperatures
ness replied to Skeeter ZX190's topic in Trout Talk
Folks tend to oversimplify and misconstrue scientific info. So, when the research says ‘no recorded stockings’ it gets turned into ‘no stockings’ and then into ‘they’re pure’ McClouds. Kinda like the whole bear thing. ‘No evidence of breeding population’ ends up ‘no bears’. Then it’s the scientists are either lying or incompetent. And that’s all I’ve got to say about that. -
Looks great. Tell us about the tomato coulis please.

The neighbor across the street from where I grew up had a mulberry tree in the back yard and we used to eat them too. There are a few around here that my babies and I would eat from. Some are along a bike trail we ride and it's a mess under those trees this year. Looks to be an especially good year for them.

Oh my! Not just great looking flies, but excellent photography of them. Nicely done!

I got the book today. In the front, the author says Spencer 'planted the seed' for the book. Also, several of his papers are listed in the bibliography.

That's pretty cool. I just ordered the book too.

That would be great-thanks! This has me wanting to ferment something. It’s been a while. I finished off the last of the cider a while back and there’s nothing in the cellar.

How sweet did the mead finish?

Looking good! A suggestion: If you're not going to drink it real soon, it would be better to not have a large air space on top. (Contamination/oxidation). Either smaller bottles or I suppose you could use some clean marbles or glass beads to raise the level and reduce the air space.

There are good guides, and there are great guides. (And mediocre, and bad guides). Congrats to both the guide and the guided for a very successful outing.

Nicely done, dad!! Congratulations to both of you. I hope you'll encourage her to give you grief for out fishing the old man every chance she gets! It'll help keep the spark alive!

Nicely done! Any news on who the dog belongs to?

Doing a little research about last frost dates here. I went through my notes and old posts here and found the following frosts/freezes after our zone 6 average last frost date of 4/15. Not a comprehensive list, just ones I made note of: 4/30/2011 4/22/2013 5/10/2014 5/9/2020 4/19-4/21/2021 4/19/2022 (31 degrees) Here's a distribution of last frost dates I found for zone 6, where most of us are. So, average = 50% = 4/15. 70% chance you're good tomorrow or later, and 90% on 4/30 or later. Frost 50% 40% 30% 20% 10% 5% 1% Last 4/15 4/18 4/21 4/25 4/30 5/4 5/13 First 10/23 10/20 10/17 10/13 10/9 10/5 9/29 That frost on 5/9/2020 above was <5% chance. Peas, spinach, beets, carrots, radishes and Swiss chard are in the ground. Tomatoes, peppers, basil and about ½ the lettuce are under lights. 10 day forecast looks good, but based on the history here, and a little more patience about these things lately, I may wait a couple more weeks.

Got a text from my nephew Devin recently. I used to fish with him when he was just a little guy, and we did many family trips to Roaring River as he was growing up. Unfortunately he lives in FL now, and I haven't seen him in a few years. But he did send me this picture: Anybody wanna guess at a weight? He didn't have scale.
