    What's Cooking?

My mom used the canned pearl onions in a stew recipe she had. We eventually voted them off the island, but as an adult I can see they could be good. From what I've seen they're a bit of work and the tenderness varies a lot. But enough about that. This is a celebration of peas!

Oh, I'm right there with you on pea soup. Took me a while to get there, but it's really good. Kinda in there with lentil soup. Good comfort food, and the onion and ham are definitely welcome. Just joking about the parboiled onion in creamed peas. Though I haven't had it that way, I do get it.

Creamed as in smooshed or creamed as in a white sauce? I liked the post either way, but this little feet is important ?

    Whatchya Drinking?

I'm just kidding about the Wild Irish Rose, of course, but since you brought it up: Southern Comfort has been lingering for more than 40 years.

You mean after the Wild Irish Rose? No--that stuff lingers.

    What's Cooking?

Tonight we had a meal prepared by a local establishment. First time for me from this place called Costceaux (not sure of the spelling). Minimal prep required Shrimp cocktail, spinach salad, country style ribs and a nice loaf of bread. And an excellent, low-priced, though unimpressively-labeled, bottle of wine. ?

    Whatchya Drinking?

You'll never encounter that if you stay east of Boonville. Just chat amongst yourselves about which private high school you attended and send pictures of dusty bottles of wine with impressive labels to each other. Meanwhile, I've got a fifth of Wild Irish Rose to finish up tonight. I'll check back in here when/if I wake up. My gawd, I'm becoming You-know-who...
  13. Cherokee Purple and Brandywine are two of the most well-known heirlooms out there and they have become readily available in recent years. They both have excellent tomato flavor. I've grown them for several years, though not very successfully the last few. They're more challenging to grow than hybrids because they're not bred for disease resistance, early ripening or high yield. They're finicky. If you spend some time searching the net for ideas on heirlooms you'll eventually run into a contingent of heirloom snobs that will drone on endlessly about Glick's versus Sudduth's versus Cowlick Brandywine and dozens of others. Skip that crap. I'd advise getting a few heirlooms you can find locally and take good care of them. I think our beloved billethead grows an heirloom or two (maybe Black Krim) and we all know his tomatoes are bigger, his lettuce is lusher, his turkeys are plumper, his wok has more BTUs, etc ?? in fact, disregard the above and just PM the man.

Sounds good. I like the smashed croutons idea.
  18. In the heat of the summer I'm watering every day. Right now it's every few days. Gotta learn your beds and how they do with watering. Depends on the soil make up, depth as well as temperature, humidity and rain. Mine dry out prett quickly. If the soil is cracking or your plants look limp, I'd say you're overdue for a watering. Always better to water at the plant base and keep it off the leaves too. Need more info on why things are looking rough. Warm weather stuff like maters and peppers don't like cold. Lettuce, brassicas, radishes, spinach will thrive in cool weather and even handle a light frost. It's been a pretty warm last few days in KC so things are looking pretty good here.

  21. Lol. ' in the same room where I poop!'
  22. Same here with maters. Some look great and are growing well, some are so-so, and some are stunted. There have been a lot of mornings in the 40's, but afternoon temps have been good. Already showing some signs of disease too. Dang it. Beans are looking crummy with deformed stems and leaves. Never had that before. Some critter is in digging up stuff too. I only showed the best of the best in that picture. ?
  23. Two of my favorite lettuces about ready to come in: Yugoslavian Red and Forellenschluss. Tasty and pretty too.

    What's Cooking?

I'll have to look for that. I remember you mentioned that name before. Don't remember seeing it. I really favor Reislings and Gewurtztraminers, if they're not too sweet. Ste. Michelle does those well.
