  1. Thanks...... I might swing by.
  2. I'm coming down in a couple of weeks, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me a place near the white ribbon area where I could get some live bait.... I'm hoping to get nightcrawlers at least, and maybe some minnows or crayfish. Also, if anyone could tell me what live baits are best, I'd appreciate it. I've heard small minnows are good. Does anyone fish with worms down there for trout?
  3. Really, like I said before, a Rapala in a fly only area might be pushing it just a bit....... But to me, there is a difference between a Rapala, and a rooster tail, or a jig or something. Maybe that's just me? Personally I've never seen a Rapala with a single hook And don't think I'm saying that anyone should be able to use anything in the fly area. Heck, I had a run in just last week with someone throwing powerbait way up in the fly area. That's just poaching no legal gray area there.
  4. One reason.......... There are more fish in the fly area. Any way I can get around that regulation and still be legal, I am doing it. I'm just telling it how it is. After about 10 AM, the fish can be pretty thin in the bait/lure area. After that, I will use any legal lure or fly in the fly area. Lets face it, its legal. If the hook is permanently attached, only has one point, and there is a feather, everyone's happy. You ask me why I would fish in the fly area with a legal lure. I ask you why you would fish in the lure/bait area with flies? I see a pretty fair amount of people doing it. Just saying................. I believe the way Missouri's regulations are designed, it is plain to see that they want to allow some spinning lures in fly only areas. They wouldn't allow spinning rods if that's not how they wanted it.
  5. Managed to stay awake, but that was about it. Got to my favorite hole at the buzzer, and fished an hour an a half an only caught one rainbow. Then went up into the catch and release area, where I stung three (but all were lost before I could get them in the net) , the largest an approximately 1 1/2 pound brown. Went back to the hole in the catch and keep area where I started the day at. Caught my limit by noon, nothing on the stringer better than 15". In the catch and keep, Powerbait did the trick. Orange glo-bugs hooked three I lost in the C&R. Still fun to get out and go. Very few people fishing today, didn't have to worry about getting my spots invaded like usual. By the way, I saw a guy walking around with seven trout on his stringer, still fishing. Not even remotely cool.
  6. What a tragedy! You are right Yakfly. We do need to learn from such terrible things as this. For my next trip to the White I'm ordering one of those fishing vests that can transform into a PFD.
  7. I guess you are right, maybe a crankbait would be considered a fly................................... The only thing I have to add to the definition of a fly, is it says in the reg books "With or without a spinner", which would strongly imply rooster tails or spinner flies would be legal.
  8. Well, going to Montauk this morning for the buzzer. The only problem is I live three hours away, so here I am having to get up at 2 AM. The plan was to head to Maramec Springs, but its blown out, and Montauk isn't. Well wish me luck both staying awake and catching fish.........................................................
  9. Musky and pike I think would be a very bad idea. Look what the introduction of northerns did to the trout populations in some streams in Colorado. Those species would probably do alright in Taney, I'll admit it. But I think it is a cold water lake where the trout population needs to be the first and last management consideration, and I personally think that introducing any species that may lower the trout population would be bad for both the fishing and the local economy in general. jmho By the way, I would be all for smallmouth and walleye stocking. Those would provide another dimension to the fishery without hurting the trout population much if at all.
  10. Golf on a fishing forum.............................................. That's against my religon
  11. Oh well. Sounds like you had a great trip
  12. Yep, brookie meat is sure good.............. I stayed in a forest service cabin in Montana on a nice brook trout stream for five nights a few years ago. I had brookies every other night for dinner...... What a treat. So much better than stocked rainbow
  13. You sound like my kinda fisherman
  14. I caught a gar one time on accident. For being a "trash fish" it put up a pretty good fight.
  15. I don't think there is anything wrong with using jigs, as I've stated clearly. But by calling fly fisherman "old farts" your bound to get some less than complementary replies. Maybe could have used a better choice of words?
  16. The boundary waters is one of the trips that I absolutely must make. Nothing like a big northern strain smallie. Awesome pics. Beautiful area. Gotta be some brookies in that creek you got a picture of......................................................
  17. The Meramec crested last night around 20,000 cfs at steelville. WOW Going to montauk tommorrow, the water hardly went up there.
  18. Yep, definitely Sasquatch. As a matter of fact I saw good old Sasquatch yesterday on my way to work
  19. I'm thinking it ain't gonna work out tommorrow. The river is running at like 12000 CFS. I'll probably call just to make sure it is blown out, but it doesn't look good. I'll probably go in a week or so if this doesn't work out. By the way, I made the call when I asked if it was blown out and I qoute "Yes, we are flooded" Bummer Next week I guess
  20. Sounds like you do pretty well for a first timer.
  21. Yeah, I'd say no shortage of enthusiasm............................................
  22. Welcome to the forum, and good luck trout fishing. I'm knew to the sport of fly fishing myself.
  23. I saw a black bear in Peck Ranch conservation area near Winona, MO. Seen lots of tracks and scat too. The Peck Ranch area is known for having some of the highest bear concentrations in Missouri, mostly due to its mountainous terrain and remoteness.
  24. 2lb is best, 4lb is fine, 6lb will work in a pinch, and 8lb will work if the water is off color. Anything heavier basically has no place on Missouri trout waters.
  25. Very Funny Has anyone seen the spring after todays rain? Hows it looking?
