  1. What about tippet ? if there is 24 or so inchs added to the end of your leader that means less diamater line which means its less difficult to straighten I use a rubber leader straighter that I keep on my vest. I little friction buy running the line through or with a lil streatch in my hands usually will straightn any problems I may have. If im storing my rods say rigged in a pick up or in the roof of my van. They will usually be unriged and reeled up so there arent any hangup type of accidents which will really hurt the way a line could perform if it was to get torn or even piericed buy a hook. JJ
  2. Howdy shortfish, Hope ya enjoy all the great info here there is lots of it! Welcome, JJ
  3. A buddy of mine had a katchem release and after I saw it I cut a dowle down, screwed a brass eyehook in the end a wala made four for about $4.00
  4. Just thought of another very important reason to remove barbs. Flies last longer, they are easier to remove from the mouth of the fish which is vital to not having to clamp on a pair of forceps and possibly destroy your fly..
  5. Well I do , I would like to say its all about safty but to be perfecty honest I think its actully because, I seem to get more hookups without havin to actually set the hook or can set a hook with much less pressure. I've had some anglers say they think fish throw hooks more easily with out barbs. I feel with proper tecnique never a fish is lost with out angler error and I can try to limit as many of thos factors as possible but still can error in so many more ways than i could ever list. So anyone else have any further input on how or why they crush or don't crush there barbs. JJ
  6. Ive been useing the Andy's Fish Breading for years. The red bag is a spicy version and is my favorite. JJ
  7. Ok so i dont have plans for the eve of our new year, so if I'm comming down alone I was thinkin about wetin my line the night before so anyone else thinkin about goin up aginst the Giant killer squid. Just thinkin it would be better to be safe than sorry.. JJ
  8. This guy has been known to keep a flask, and well a flask is only as good as the stashed bottle that filled it.
  9. Howdy Bill There are tons of goood info and posters here so welcome and tightlines. JJ
  10. I like to affix the hackle under the hearl prior to wraping with a lil bit of Sally's Hard As Nails this builds the body a lil on knats as well as cracklebacks . and I am allways trying to leave enough room to apply the same head cement after all whip finishes. Seems to have helped my flys with durability to smear alil any chance I get, but the mono idea sound good also. I do notice that a hook with the barb removed/crushed is the best way to keep my flies in good shape should the fish be so kind as to assult it. JJ
  11. Yep me to. Actually created another thread about the same subject lol pages seem to be loading sloer than normal also
  12. Stared to miss the sight this, morning was wondering if it was my pc?
  13. "We had problems with various residents netting the grass carp and moving them to their cove to get rid of the grass." LMW that sounds like Carp rustlin' to me how did ya stopem with a posse
  14. I really think its hard to beat the "skaters" ie. crackleback, grithifs nat, and the renagade not only do they have a great ability to float better than most traditional patterns. They are also very versital in that they they can appear as imergers in the surface film buy being stripped just under it, or buy adding a bead to the pattern or some sort of weighted line can be stripped back as a nymph. JJ
  15. Santa Please help thos who are in need get what they need this season. Also I would like to put in the good word for the posters in this forum. They have helped brighten the fishing for soliders deployed in Iraq to whom we are all indebted. Many of the forums posters have also Im shure helped thos less fortunate in there fishing endeavors with pleanty of sound advise. JJ ps. be shure to check the fridge when your here for a few carrots for the raindeer there in there somewhere since Ive givin up the diet again, and that might also explain why there are not gonna be any cookies...sorry
  16. "Mud Puppies" is what they were called by my dads long time fishin buddy Rick. His son used to get bored while we(our two families) were all at Bennett for summer vacation and Tim could catch em on jigs anytime he got distracted....thanks for the good memories on this post. LOL
  17. I perfer a amber wrap style of sun glasses (a full framed but curved lens that extends to cover the peripheral vision also). I mosty buy the 15 to 20 dollar varities
  18. Cant see your pic
  19. This sounds as if its gonna be a good time. Im gonna wrangle a few things around and try to make it. Might have a few family member or a local pal or two in tow tho
  20. Gavin and Ham - Yep thats what I have been doing for the last several years, buying Dai-Riki hooks for specific patterns at feather-craft. However after tying buy the dozen to feed them to friends and family. Im allways running short and as in anything else I figured there may be a better way of doing things rather than not having exactly what i want when I want it. Not to mention that I am always ready to try another new pattern, size, or creation which for me seems only to be limited buy materials. McManus - thanks for the advise there ill check the book out. Ive read many things on hooks and there similarities and well a reference would be nice, rather than doing the lay them down on the bench and compare tecnique. Has anyone tried the eagle-claw tying hooks? Seems like they have the best prices that I have found at about eight dollars per hundred (Cabela's), but at five or six styles and two to five sizes in each is still well pretty pricy. Thanks for the advice so far. Anyone else wanna add there two cents please do. JJ
  21. Im about to make a investment in hooks, and well I think this time its gonna be a much larger purchase than I have ever made in the past. I'm thinkin right after I finally finish my holliday shoping. I'll be purchasing several hundreds of assorted styles and sizes. How would you go about making a purchase of this type? Not askin ya to do my shoppin for me, but if you've been in this situation before I would gladly accept all your input or advise. Thanks, JJ
  22. Buddy just got back from a trip to Marktwain with his dad they arrarently did well on Crappie also as the two large zip bags in my freezer will prove ...aint he nice ....JJ
  23. Ok im gonna admit somthin the only success ive had at urban trout fishing was at Suson Park in south St. Louis county. I have tried the fly rod on many trips for the winter fishing there but have only caught fish using bait. "excluding summer fishing iv caught "it" all including crappie there "on the fly". I use ultra light spinning rods with 2 or 4 lb mono, weighted boobers, and egg hooks with the redhot salomon eggs two or three per hook . My best trip consisted of me and a buddy with two rods each setting up a kind of spread out pattern so that when the fish came threw we had much of the area covered. Now this was done later in the season when we were aloud to use multiple rods and were planing on keepin fish. Several times during the course of the day we had all bobbers movin even if it was a challenge to set the hook on all of the rods at once . It was one of the best days of fishin iv ever done with that character....LOL...JJ
  24. I forgot about http://www.vogelsresort.com/ this place is also close to Bennett. Just outside the park and is a little less expencive and nice also even tho they dont have a indoor pool like SandSprings mentioned in my last post
  25. Gink is a Dry fly dressing or floatent, the same company maks a sister product called Sink which well "sinks" flies. I personally like to ad weight while tieing mine by adding lead wire or maybe a bead depending on the pattern. Another way to help a fly sink faster is to place a little mud and water in the plam of your hand gently work to the flys crevises this will fill in the small places were air gets trapped into a fly that would eventually work its way out during regular fishing..
