That reminds me of a story about a coworker when I worked in Hope, AR. Lou was raised and lived the first 55 years of his life in Boston. He moved to Texarkana from there into an apartment about half a block from the Greyhound bus station. He commuted 33 miles to Hope. One morning he got ready to come to work (he usually got to the office around 7am) and his car would not start. Having just moved in a few weeks prior, not knowing anyone, and having a stong work ethic, he decided - you guessed it - to take the bus to work. The girl at the ticket counter gave him a funny look when he said he needed a ticket to Hope, but sold him one for the 7am bus. After three stops between TXK and Hope and a two mile walk to the office, he got to work at around 11 am....... But you're right, Dano... We get into heavy traffic in larger cities and complain, but there are very few cars that have more than one person in them. Many of these (including me) are in big, oversized rigs that burn way too much gas. I'm a bit "stuck" in my 4X4 and had to sell my Contour (wish I had it back) to pay some bills during my unemployment. But I can still question the lady who recently traded her Excursion for a Hummer.... No kids... just her... and she commutes 28 miles a day... one way. Yep... memories of riding the bus from Cammack Village to downtown Little Rock with my grandfather for lunch and to visit my grandmother at Blass are pretty fond ones. I'd ride one to work myself as he did back in the 50s and 60s...

Just got this in an email... Might put a bit of perspective on things... "All these examples do NOT imply that gasoline is cheap; it just illustrates how outrageous some prices are.... Compared with Gasoline...... Think a gallon of gas is expensive? This makes one think, and also puts things in perspective. Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 ... $10.32 per gallon Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 ..........$9.52 per gallon Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 .... $10.17 per gallon Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 ......... $10.00 per gallon Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 ......... $33.60 per gallon Vick's Nyquil 6 oz $8.35 ... $178.13 per gallon Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 .. $123.20 per gallon Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 ....... . $25.42 per gallon Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 .....$84.48 per gallon And this is the REAL KICKER... Evian water 9 oz $1.49..........$21.19 per gallon! $21.19 for WATER and the buyers don't even know the source. (Evian spelled backwards is Naive.) Ever wonder why computer printers are so cheap? So they have you hooked for the ink. Someone calculated the cost of the ink at................ you won't believe it................... but it is true......................... $5,200 a gal. ( Five thousand two hundred dollars !! ) So, the next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on water, Scope, or Whiteout, Pepto Bismol, Nyquil or God forbid, Printer Ink!!!!!" Hmmmm... I think printer ink is made from vegetable dye.... (veggies grown by Amish?) Maybe you have a point, Catman....

bin Laden has said all along that he would destroy the US by shutting down the oil supply. In today's society, just think what would happen if crude oil supply was cut off. He called the middle eastern oil tanker routs the "umbilical cord" of the US. How right he is... Alternative sources of energy are a MUST if we are going to keep going. Biofuel is one alternative, but I don't think we can produce enough to make much of a drop in the barrel... We need more emphasis on solar and hydrogen based energy. By the way... biofuel means more commercial fertilizer, herbacides, and pestacides that wind up in our water supply and fisheries... Then again, another read of the book of Revelations might just provide some insight...

big Ozark river smallmouths

Wow... Having worked in statistics for over 25 years, now I wish I had gotten into this thread sooner. Al, you impress me with your stats and records. I can tell you a bit about the last fish I caught, but that's about it... However, as a statistics "nut" of some degree, I do have one question about your "100 plus" fishing days. Well... a couple of questions... 1. On average, how many hours of fishing did you do on these days? Translate the number of fish per day into fish per hour. 2. How much water did you cover? I'm assuming this was fishing from a boat in a lot of cases, but can you give some fish per hour stats on wading trips and/or canoe trips? When I have more time, I have to go back and read this thread more thuroughly... VERY interesting discussion... -
"Crap meat?" I thought that was what that red/brown strip in a White was... Yes, if you take that out, Whites are pretty good to eat, but I bet I can tell the difference in White and Crappie fillets... Tightline, I'm with you. I know I love to feel the tug of a "Brownie" on the end of my line, but when a White nails that bait, it's "Katy bar the door!!!" I remember the first time a buddy took me White bass fishing. I had caught a lot of LMs, Ks, and catfish in my day, but the first White hit and I would have bet the farm he weighed 5-6 lbs. He went less than 2... Smallies tug hard, too... but not that hard in my opinion... As for those guys who were not interested in the Whites and wanted LMs and Ks... They would probably complain if you hung them with a new rope... Gimme a hard tug on the end of my line... I don't care what kind of fish is doing the tuggin'...

Maybe that banker who told Henry Ford to stay out of the automobile business because horses were here to stay and automobiles were just a passing fad was right afterall... I bet the Amish are not complaining about the price of gas...

I can see it now..... "NEWS FLASH: Three men dressed in waders and eating chili dogs were seen entering Table Rock Dam earlier today. As authorities went to investigate, but could not get close to the dam due to a strong odor coming from inside the dam. At that point, the three men were seen exiting the interior of the dam with ripped waders and gas masks. One of the men threw a lighted match into the door they exited resulting in a huge explosion. Authorities then opened all gates at the dam sounding the horn which seemed to startle one of the men. Film at 11..........."

Geez... I wish MY wife loved ME enough to buy me a Winston... Anyway... I knew you meant from Leonard... but my dyslexia set in... The rod brand advice question was initiated to get some groans from half of the guys on here who have listened to the other half confuse people on what brand rod is best... Hey Leonard and Dano... think we should talk about using gloves to handle fish? -
Now you've got ME laughin' at MY monitor, WF... "You've learned well, young grasshopper..."

OK... since he chimed in... Leonard introduced me to the idea of using Maxim... SnowFly... Thanks... So now that you volunteered... What brand rod should I buy? -
Wayne, very good idea.... you guard pothole... Dano, you oversee Outlet 2... I'll take one for the team and stand guard at Outlet 1... If they bomb the dam, I'll holler at both of you... OH... and I'm sure Leonard will take up post at rebar... Duckydoty... where're you gonna set up post? Oh... wait a minute... We'll take the day shift and give Leonard and Duckydoty the night shift... Just think of all the fishermen's lives we're gonna save!!!

Fishing "gin clear" waters

Phil, No... it came from the AGFC weekly fishing report which I get emailed to me every week. Go to their website to sign up. They have a weekly newsletter on AGFC activities and in the winter, you can get duck updates. John, I've noticed a green tint to some Orvis leaders and tippet. I wonder if that's why. Also, I've begun using Maxim line for tippet which has a green tent. Interesting...... -
Google's Word of the Day: fetor: (noun) An offensive odor; a stench. Synonyms: malodor, malodour, reek, stench, stink, mephitis Now we can use other words for toxic fumes emitting from waders of chili dog eatin' fly fishermen...

GF... You're right... Paranoia is the buzz word for the day. RR... You're right... I've not fished TVA tailwaters, but I hear they are just as you say and will become more popular than Arkansas/Missouri waters if we're not careful... WM... In 2nd grade, I learned a "DAM" held back water. "darn" was a naughty word my dad used... and my momma slapped me for using... And I'm with Phil... I want to see that Spainish bass myself... And if there WAS a fence at the top of the hill, the family would have just driven down to Outlet 1 and walked up the bank...

For you guys talking about how clear the water is in places now... This is from the Arkansas Game and Fish fishing report: Fishing Tip: Larry Hurley at Poormans Guide Service gives this bit of advice for fishing Arkansas clear lakes: "Although the waters of some lakes may look clear, they actually have a greenish tint to them that will make clear monofilaments stand out. In lakes like Ouachita and DeGray, try using a low-visibility green line instead of clear whenever the bite is slow. You can also take a green or brown magic marker and color the line for a few feet above the lure to get interested fish to commit to hitting." If this works, we want plenty of fish porn to look at of your catches...

Pro'ly get a better answer on that question on JW's board, but to the best of my knowledge, there was some sort of MinFlo agreement that was met, but never implemented. One problem with MinFlo is the lake level of Beaver, TR, BS, NF, and GF. There are levels that must be maintained for electricity, flood control, etc. The lake level or "pool" for MinFlo was, in theory, going to raise the AVERAGE lake level a couple of feet. This put the lake folks - dock owners, fishermen, etc. - into a tizzy. They came up with the excuses that all the docks, launch ramps, parks, etc. would have to be re-designed to accomodate this rise in the lake level. I forget the cost, but it was in the 7 figures if I remember right. Not saying they don't have a point, but I can't see a couple of feet making a big difference when the lake usually is BELOW the present pool during the prime months anyway... Honestly, I'm on the fence about MinFlo. There are alternatives that could be "pleasing" to everyone involved. I'm not sure MinFlo is the answer to the problem, but would be better than NO flow for extended periods of time. porter57, Trout are not native to ANY tailwaters in the south. They were introduced as a "gift" from Uncle Sam for damming these streams and, basically, killing all the native species. The White, prior to the dam system, was a very different ecosystem. But what has resulted is some of the best tailwater trout, if not trout fishing in general, in the world. The economic impact if the trout go away is astounding. Recent surveys indicate the White tailwater system (excluding Taneycomo - this was an Arkansas survey) has an economic impact of around a QUATER BILLION DOLLARS per year. There are some grass roots activities working towards saving these tailwaters and the industry, but organization has been slow paced to say the least. Opinions are so varied on all the issues that it is dfficult at best to get anything going. But we ALL need to wake up to the fact that we have to do SOMEthing - ANYthing - to keep the trout healthy and therefore keep the industry healthy.
