  1. LMW, Different flies at different times under different situations. And then there is the technique - slow one time, fast the next.. drift... strip... indicator... stand on one foot and turn counterclockwise three times with your left hand in the air and nose pointed towards the water... And then... sometimes it works for me, but won't work for you. Bottom line, take all information with a "it worked for them, but will it work for me?" Some guys find a good combination, start with it, and do well. Others (like me much of the time) spend the first hour or two casting different flies and testing techniques until I find something that works. THEN it may be a matter of timing. I've been on the river with fishermen lined up using different flies and baits, using different techniques, and nobody catching anything. Then all the sudden, every rod on the bunch is bent. I swear one time on the Spring River in Arkansas at Bayou Access... three fly fishermen - one fishing scuds under an indicator, one fishing a dry fly, one (me) fishing a soft hackle. Five bait casters... one fishing redworms under a bobber, two fishing baits - one Mepps, one jointed minnow. The other two had power bait. We were fishing all morning with nobody catching anything. Then... all the sudden one had a fish... then another... then a double... in the next hour, the bait guys had caught their limit of nice fish having thrown several smaller ones back. The fly guys had caught numerous fish.... but... then nothing. The bait guys loaded their catch and left. The fly fishermen stayed another two hours with no luck. I went home after that... Ducky, Nice fish and nice pics.
  2. ah... OK... I see what you mean. I guess I just judge the size of the insect by the size hook I would tie it on. That's what was confusing me.
  3. LMW, Streamer patters - flies such as wooly buggers, soft hackles, clouser minnows, and others that are fished by drifting and stripping line to move them in the water. Streamers work under the surface and usually immitate some sort of fish. On Taney and many other streams you can cast a wooly bugger across or slightly up current, let it drift with the line "pulling it" back across the current. At the end of the drift, the fly will begin to turn and "face" upstream. At that point, get ready for a take... but if you don't, then (on Taney) slooooooooowwwwwwwwlllllyyyyyy strip it back towards you... You may have to adjust your strip speed on different waters and at different times, but lately on Taney it's been a sloooooowwww strip that has worked.
  4. AAAAHHHH-EEEEEEE! c'est si bon Welcome to the area and the forum. LOTS of information here and some pretty good people... at least they are online... Laissez les bon temps rouler!
  5. I ain't skeered-a no Taneycomo squid... Bring 'im on.... TWO of 'em if ya want... Put 'em up, put 'em up! Which one of you fiost? I can fight you both togedder if you want. I can fight you with one paw tied behind my back. I can fight you standing on one foot. I can fight you with my eyes closed. Oh, pull an axe on me, eh? Sneaking up on me, eh? Why, I'll... Ruff! I do believe in spooks. I do believe in spooks. I do! I do! I do! I do believe in spooks. I do believe in spooks. I do! I do! I do! I do!
  6. Blasphemy!!! Naw... just kiddin'... I will vouch for Shimano reels... I was put on them about 15 years ago, and barely look at anything else in a spinning reel. As for fly fishing under an indicator, just take it off, tie on a streamer pattern. Plenty of casting and stripping action. But... to each his own. It's still fishin' ain't it?
  7. I wanna go! But no vacation and no money right now... Where would you fly in commercially?
  8. Yep... those critters can be pretty spooky... Did you get splashed by any beavers? Did you have to check your "drawers" after a heron snuck up behind you and let out a big "SQUAAAAAAAWWWWWKKKKK!!!!" Between the beavers, fox, armadillos, bobcats, deer, herons, coons, giant man-eating Taneycomo squid, and the Leonards, you have a lot to fear... Good report...
  9. Huh? Explain, please...
  10. Is the one on "O" hiway west of Highlandville still in operation? That would be a lot closer to Springfield. I agree with both of you to some degree. IF that's what you want... yes, to introduce a kid to fishing, a trout pay to fish would be OK... OR... if you just want to go catch a bunch in a hurry... But... for any kind of fisherman, I would not even pretend to want to fish one. Not with Taney so close.
  11. Would that be a patent or a copyright? Try clicking here.... Or, call Umpqua... Honestly, probably more money in doing that than doing it yourself...
  12. Jeremy, One thing I noticed right off... The picture of the midge in the palm of your hand... compare it to the fly to the right and the one below it. A lot of guys "tend" to want to tie midges on scud type hooks (and I admit, I seem to like that look.) But look at which fly most looks like the profile of the real thing in your hand. Nice pics... Thanks...
  13. I plead the fifth....
  14. If you're going to go as far as the Little Red, you may as well include the Norfork at handicap access just north of the city of Norfork. Then there is the White.... Jeez...just take your pick of places there according to generation.
  15. Uh... I didn't see no pictures of no 30 inch pheesh there, Leonard... Sounds like a pretty good night and you left at a good time...
  16. I hope those are breathable waders... neoprenes usually wind up with a condition commonly called "Permafart...."
  17. Bass Pro has them... click here.... I would bet Michael at Backcountry Outfitters could set you up with some 15s... Dang... now I know what Ol' Santy can bring me this year!!
  18. Wow... did you get a girth on that 30 inch male? Nice pics....
  19. Dang... now I actually might want to look at the SportsTalk forum... OK, Dano and other Hawg Fans... AP has UA at #5 with USA Today and Harris putting them at #6. But how the heck can Rutgers be #6 and Arkansas #7 in the BCS? Is it simply because Rutgers has gone undefeated against five High School teams? My opinion, things will change in that category when Rutgers plays WV... Now... Arkansas should do well agains the remaining two opponents, but I would not bet on them beating Florida, although they do have the capacity. But Florida is just too hard to beat right now... So any guesses right now where the Hawgs will be "post season?"
  20. Wow... that is one big ugly dead chicken.... So... basically, this is a Griffith's Gnat with oversized badger hackle?
  21. Yep... looks like peacock to me... But Ostrich would work... Is the chickaboo tied to be "flat" or could you use a bunch of fibers to make a "funnel" shaped tail?
  22. Look at the feedback... Can you believe someone's answer to the problem was to "change the locks?"
  23. Where were you guys when I bought my wading boots? Yes... definately go a couple sizes up. I only went one and regret it now. I struggle every time I go fishing. As for breathables, Zach Matthews had a good article in American Angler back in the Spring, I think it was. You can go to Zach's website click here and go to the board section, join his forum, and ask about breathables. Zach is a great guy and will give you good answers.
  24. Video of the spawn, Phil? Wait... I know... you're trying to get the Giant Man-Eating Taneycomo Squid on video....
  25. Thanks for the info, John... Glad the Norfork is still producing bigguns there... Now if I can just get down there and fish...
