David, Welcome to the forum. You are in a great spot for fly fishing. You should hook up with David Bolin on this forum and "Maddog" Mike Davis who lives in Heber Springs. Both guys are avid fly fishermen on the Little Red. I can tell you a couple of my favorite spots. Cow Shoals is "hit and miss" for me, but when it's on, it's ON... Then there is Swinging Bridge and Libby Shoal. I fish the Norfork and BSD tailwaters more and now Taneycomo, but if I'm down that way, you can bet I'm on the LR. Now that you're hooked on fly fishing, you should hook up with the Arkansas Fly Fishers (Click here) and hone those skills. They are meeting at 6pm Monday the 18th at Whole Hog Cafe (2516 Cantrell) and you'll meet Jeff Guerin who is doing the program on the Little Missouri tailwaters a bit south of you. Good option to the Little Red at times. THEN we can get you up to Mountain Home in October for the SOC FFF Conclave where you can learn more about fly fishing in a couple of days than you can all the rest of the year. AND meet up with some GREAT fly fishing guys who know there stuff.... and you can meet me, too... Welcome to Arkansas (from an Arkie transplant on secret undercover assignment in SW Missouri) and to the fly fishing world! And again... welcome to the mad house... uh... I mean forum...

I just went out for some fresh air (OK... I went out for a smoke) and encountered something I have not seen before. On a window screen down the walkway going to the parking lot, I saw several moths and then one "bug" that caught my eye. It was "white sand" colored (very light beige) and in a perfect T shape. The body was about 3/4 inch long and the same length was at the top of the T. I caught him and looked at him on my finger, but he flew off and over my head before I could tell if the "T" part was wing or some sort of antennae. The body and "wing" were both about the diameter of a pencil lead. Any of you "bug" experts know what I'm talking about? Wish I had taken my cell phone and got a picture of him...

I'm surprised there are not more in SW MO. Arkansas (once known as "The Bear State" at one time) brought them back a few years ago and they have done well. There is now a season on them. I've encountered a few while deer and turkey hunting. One time in particular, I was on a deer stand and my buddy was about 400 yards west of me. The truck was parked at the edge of a food plot about 200 yards east of me. I heard "a woman talking" and getting closer finally realizing it was a bear. A few minutes later, I heard the truck door slam shut. Then a few minutes later, the momma bear crossed in front of me about 60 yards on the other side of the small pond I was watching. Then, a bit later, the truck horn began to sound... I got up, walked to the truck, and my bud was sitting in the truck wondering if the bear had eaten me... He heard her coming his way, made his way back to the truck, and wouldn't get out. I laughed, but he told me he didn't want NO part of NO bear!!! Another time, I was walking through some woods and smelled that "bear" smell. Once you smell it, it's hard to forget. I stopped, looked around for a long time, finally spotted the bear moving away from me about 75 yards or so ahead, and quietly made my way in the opposite direction. If you chance seeing one and can observe from a distance through field glasses (and from the cab of your truck) they are pretty neat to watch. But I've never had one help me launch a drift boat!!! like Phil has... For the most part, the black bears around the Ozarks are harmless if you leave them alone and stay away from them. But if you see cubs, GET THE HECK OUTTA THERE!!! Mommas are VERY protective...

Will the rain north of there affect RR in a day or two? I know the Spring River in AR can become stained a day or two after a big rain north of Mammoth Spring...

Just wait until you're night fishing and the big Taney black bear sneaks up behind you... tag teaming with the GM-ETKS...
-
Just come down to the pavillion... Bring a live chicken, two dead possums, a new 4X leader, $250 in tens and twenties, a 750ML bottle of Royal Crown, and a buxom blonde virgin college girl (over 18) with you. Go out in the woods behind the pavillion and sacrafice the afore mentioned items to the Taney gods... Better yet... you better let me do it for you. You might mess things up...
-
Did they have little umbrellas in them? I usually have to ply Cindy with a few strong Crown and Cokes... Hey... As Toby Keith says, "She's my little WHISKEY GIRL!"
-
Dang... I looked it up... "Missouri State Statute #BR549 - Anyone who is fishing and drinking beer must invite Flysmallie to tag along and furnish him with beer and flies. Failure to do so will result in up to a $500 fine and 90 days in jail." Just google it... it's there you just have to really dig for a while...

Well, I don't have any aerospace experience, but sure... email me at tbeeson (at) hotmail (dot) com

Hey Ronnie... Glad to see you back safely. I'm assuming your family had a good time and you foot the bill... You have enough money left to afford gas to drive to RR? Wow... you ARE a budget minded traveler... either that or you hid some cash from Momma... Just wait til she figures that out....

Hey Michael... I forgot to add the 7 forms of identification Jim asks me for when I buy something at the shop...

Is the Pope Catholic? Does a wild bear sh!@ in the woods? Is the sky blue? Does the sun come up in the east and go down in the west? Need I say more? Naw... none of those work at all... I will not leave the house headed for Taney without some mohair leeches and pine squirrel sculpins ever again myself... As for colors... save that for a PM... Can't give ALL of Leonard's secrets away...

OK... OK... OK... I admit... it was me lookin' for a midnight snack...

GOOD float! Watch for elk up there. I wouldn't float it right now with all the rain, but it's a nice spring float. I would check with the officials or canoe rentals on the status/forecast for this weekend. Could be too high in that area.

And there are no snakes or armadillos in Alaska... WHAT WAS HE THINKING?!?!?!?

Fly Fishing and Father's Day
Terry Beeson replied to Rabbi Eric Eisenkramer's topic in General Angling Discussion
Hmmmm... watching my father fishing and catching a big stringer of bluegill while I ran the tractor and bush hog in the field next to the creek he was fishing? My fonder memories are of my grandfather who would get in his lawn chair, teach me how to tie knots and bait the hook, then keep an eye on my bobber and yell "JERK" when it would go under and then laugh while I fought and held up a nice bluegill, bass, or crappie... Both men, sadly, are gone... but not forgotten... -
Crossed the James this morning on FM 141 bridge. There was a sign that the bridge was closed. Looks like the water had gone over last night, but was BARELY going under it this morning. LOTS of debris against the bridge. Yep... the fishing in either river is probably not good for a few days...

Well, the pictures on KY3 a few days ago (from Nixa) didn't look like any Lab I've ever been around... I heard they are very partial to hunting for food in tail waters at night.... Doesn't a bear slapping at a fish sound a lot like a beaver slapping with his tail? Doesn't a bear hungry for night fishermen sound a lot like a squawking heron? Aren't they partial to fish that are on a hook being dragged upstream? I also heard they are attracted to small lights like the ones you wear around your head or on your cap. Then there's that thing about them mistaking the smell of wet breathable waders for the smell of fresh salmon... Not to scare anyone or anything....

That was quite a hike for a stumblin' ol' phat man, knee surgery or not... I did need that type of therapy at that time and still need to do more. The steps and slope at the Taney outlets are good therapy and I keep telling my wife I need more... Next time, though, I'm hijackin' a golf cart!!!
