  1. I have fished the Current on many occasions at night with decent success. Never this time of year though. In the warmer months its a good time if you can handle the insects. Just find a section of the stream you know and bring a buddy. Streamers work well if you want to fly fish. They do sell glow in the dark indicators, but the ones I have need to be put in front of a light to stay visible. If your spin fishing small crankbaits are the way to go. I agree with the above reply that just after dark or dawn seem to be the prime time on the Current. Here is a nice brown caught down there like a week ago for your viewing pleasure.
  2. Welcome!!!
  3. Thanks..your right about that they are really gold in color there. This one also looked like a tiger under the water with dark bars on its sides. Im ready to go again soon.
  4. The Black river is one of my favorite places in the state to fish for smallies. My brother and I get down there often. We have landed many 18+ fish from this gorgeous river. Sadly I have personally witnessed locals overharvesting fish and tossing empty beer cans and trash in the stream. Ive called mdc but they cant get there on time to catch them in the act. Hopefully I can someday own some property down on the river.
  5. My Brother and I were down there Sunday just scouting around. I think we saw your car blue and white Explorer with Illinois plates as I can remember. We went down to the next access. Those are some nice pics hopefully those little ones grow up. We don't have much experience down there how big do the trout get? Most of the ones I've seen are in the 8-10 inch range.
  6. Nice Report...Every once in while in the winter when the sun is shining the fishing gets good. I think those midges like the winter sun.
  7. Don't forget if you are going to be around Montauk you might as well try outside of the park. The upper Current river is one of the most pristine and productive trout streams in the midwest. "In my opinion of course". There are a few different places to access the river, the maps can be found on this forum. Also there are just as many posts about the flies and rigs that can be productive. This time of year is nice because the crowds are down. Sometimes you may not even see another soul on the river. Plus the scenery is just as good as the fishing. Bald Eagles,Deer,Beaver are common sights just to name a few. It is nice..So check it out if you have time. And any questions you have there are some really knowledgeable people here that can help you out.
  8. Welcome the forum..This is the best place to pick up new advice, tactics and places to fish..The fishing reports are also second to none.

    Bugs

The large unidentified insect could be a Hellgramite(dobson fly larvae). Not sure though, it looks fairly large. Those are some great pics.

    Midge

Yeah, Gavin I do like the midge under the Caddis. Usually the the color of the dropper doesn't really matter all that much.Brown, black, red, seems to work well. My brother and I have had some of our best Winter Current days on that exact setup.
  11. My brother and I were down Saturday as well. Man was that breeze chilly, had about the same luck as you did drifting nymph's and wolly's. Caught about 7 or 8 apiece nothing real special though. After some time in the Current we made a side trip to the Little piney creek. We didn't last long there considering I took a header into the creek after about 10 minutes.BRRRRRRRR
  12. Thanks I will.
  13. In a couple months I will be making my annual winter trout fishing extravaganza trip . I spend most of my time on the upper Current river(tan vat, baptist etc)..The winter month's have provided some productive fishing and some decent size fish. Not to mention just being on the river at this time of year is amazing. This time I really wanted to check out the Barren Fork Creek. I've never been there. I'm well aware of the spook factor when fishing these small streams and creeks. I'm looking for some advice on the setup I need to be lucky enough to get into some fish. Short rod? Tippet size? Flies?. Woolies, leeches, cracklebacks, and the occasional dry(If there is a hatch coming off). All work well in the winter on the Current but can I expect it to be the same on the Barren Fork? Any advice well help thanks forum!
  14. Fished 21 yesterday with my bro. Caught about 7 total in 2 hours on the fly rods with olive and brown woolies. Didn't see anyone else land any except the two poachers using the powerbait. We watched them keep at least 7 or 8 a piece. My brother got there plate number and called DNR. I yelled at them and they treated it like I was the bad guy. The fishing was fun but that put a bad taste in my mouth. They were driving a white dodge ram pickup.
  15. There is Tradewinds that is just outside the park a ways. Tents are welcome. They have a website if you need directions. Also back by Tan vat access there is the Civil War battle field that me and my buddies stay at often. It's nice if you like to be away from all the people. They don't have any kind of restrooms or showers though. That eagles park is a bust like they are saying. Last time I went by there the whole thing was for sale and it was gated up and locked.
