  1. I'm sorry to hear that, oneshot. All the best to your family. Jim

    Busy Day

You'll likely spend the next few days building a new cabin, rebuilding a car engine and digging irrigation trenches. Enjoy the rest of your "vacation". Sounds a lot like all the stuff my dad does for us....
  3. The Current is running at 200 CFS now, which is very fish-able, but still moving quite a bit. If they get 4" of rain, I highly doubt it'll be fish-able Tuesday, unfortunately. Those are my two cents, but others will chime in and give you their thoughts.

    Weekend

If you want numbers, buy some pink eggs from the fly shop at Montauk and fish them as deep as you can. If you want browns/quality, don't fish eggs. Woolies in the am and pm, scuds, Pats, caddis larva, etc. Have fun. Jim

    Advice

If you're into numbers, it's hard to beat an egg pattern fished on the bottom. You'll mostly only catch stocker rainbows (rare is the brown trout who eats an egg pattern, in my experience), but you should catch quite a few. I'd also try Pats Rubber legs, princes, and stone flies for brown action. Streamers in olive produce well for me, too. Have fun! Jim
  6. Thanks, Gavin. I was thinking the same thing---Blue Springs comes to mind....
  7. On Spring Break this week and wanted to fish Tan Vat and Baptist tomorrow. I'm thinking it may be too high as the gauge is at 233 CFS now, and I suspect rising. Any thoughts on how high is too high below the park? I recollect that 200CFS was quite fast, but it's been a while...Thanks.... Jim
  8. I was also shocked by how few there were. Perhaps they photo shopped everyone out as a ruse to make us drive down there.
  9. Beautiful fish....
  10. Got it...thanks again! Jim
  11. Can you explain what you mean by "opening up the hook gap"? You mean make the point further away from the shaft--i.e. move it in the direction away from the shaft as if I was going to make it into a straight line? Thanks in advance! Jim
  12. Thanks for all the tips. I was using a thingamabobber that was too big, I'm guessing. I should have used a small midge about 18 inches under a small pinch-on indicator. That will be my approach next trip. I missed a TON of fish, too, because I'm not the best at detecting strikes....thanks again Jim
  13. Drove down last night to hang out with a buddy in his dad's newly purchased place about a mile from the stream. Fished this morning, starting in Zone 2 where the hatchery creek enters the stream. Caught one on my second cast on an orange egg pattern. Took me another hour and a half to get my 2nd, this time in Zone 1 below the waterfall. By the end of the day, I had landed about 10, and every one on an egg. I was frustrated because I tried a bunch of other stuff: soft hackle, nymphs, san juan, midges and dries. The water was perfect, and fish were everywhere. For those of you who fish there often, what's the secret to your success? Don't get me wrong, 10 fish in 4 hours is fine, but other guys were tearing them up, it seemed. The fish were actively feeding just below the surface and several were hitting the surface. Loads of light colored flies were around (I'm not sure what they were). But, I'd love to hear some secrets to conquering Bennett without egg patterns, if you'd like to share. Since I have access to this new place, I may be down there a lot in the near future. Thanks. Jim
  14. I wasn't the one who mentioned the person with the brown on the stringer. Nor was I the one wet wading. But I do move quickly when I arrive....only because I'm excited to fish, not because I "have to get to this hole first".
  15. Yep, that was me in the Highlander. So what do you use during the trico hatch at Tan Vat? I usually do well there at the riffle with Pat's rubber legs. But obviously that doesn't imitate a trico.....
  16. I think I saw your camp. I was going to fish the hole where you were camped, but I didn't want to wake anyone up so I just fished downstream.....
  17. Flat water exclusively....is that your experience, too?
  18. Went down to Baptist Camp yesterday morning for a few hours of fishing. Hiked down the service road to the "tire" and started fishing the log. Immediately got into two rainbows, normal size. Both caught on an egg pattern (orange size 10 with a beadhead). Later, I decided that I'm sick and tired of fishing with egg patterns, so I switched so that I could practice with a dry-dropper. I am so glad I did. I caught 4 browns on a size 14 Royal Wolf. Nothing was caught on my droppers, and I switched those all day long. However, the Wolf did great for the few hours I fished there. I saw (spooked) some PIGS. Conditions: intermittent sunshine, 78 degrees, 114 CFS, lots of people for a Monday, water slightly off color. Does anyone think that getting there early is required to have a good day of fishing? I was there at sunrise and did no better than I normally do getting there at noon. I assume the brown bite is better in early/late daylight hours. But I was surprised I didn't do better than about 5-6 fish in about 3 1/2 hours. Jim
  19. Awesome fish! Great job. Jim
  20. Hi- I'd start with a 2 or 3 weight fly rod, 7x tippet, 9 foot leader, and walk slowly and upstream. Flies should be small, IMO, but if they're small, it doesn't particularly matter what they are, from my own experience. The key to fishing BSC is stealth. It's a shallow creek, so anything knee deep or deeper is prime water to fish. Adams, small elk hair, wd 40s, primrose and pearl midges should do the trick. Good luck Jim
  21. Welcome...it's my favorite river. jim
  22. I fished the Blue Ribbon stretch last weekend (MLK) and saw at least 8 fishermen fishing the water at the campground. I thought that was illegal when I saw them, but didn't say anything as I was driving, and I tend to mind my own business if I'm not 100% sure I'm right about a rule. Jim
  23. Awesome report/conversation. Do you guys mind telling me what particular streamers you were throwing?
  24. Congrats! And trust me, as a dad of two little girls and a Current River fly fishing addict, no fishing trip will ever compare to being a dad. Best of luck!!
