ya as long as they land in the water first, they ride right side up. Plus the body kind of acts as a weed guard even when they are upside down. So far I've only hung them up in trees- vegetation doesn't affect them. The bigger sizes also have a nice "walk the dog" action- I guess from the long hook riding out behind them.
I'm still playing around with the idea of using small wide gap worm hooks for poppers and it seems to work. The flies ride well and pop well- they also slide over mats of veggies and all that pond scum stuff. I am still trying to get a pond bass to take one of these as I drag it over the weeds. Takes a little adjustment to set the hook with these but it works well once you figure it out.
When I keep fish, which is rare (mostly because I do not feel like cleaning them), I go with the stick or rock to the head. Catfish are the Bruce Willis of the river. Yippeekyay blankity blanker.
I agree with hiring a guide- makes a huge difference... but I couldn't afford it either so I understand that part. The White is so different and big that it can be really difficult to nail down a pattern if you've never been there. Night fishing is a blast- I usually use big black buggers (size 2)- really ugly ones too, sometimes with a loose deer hair head to push water.
Plus if you want to cast accurately at close range with a fast rod, it sometimes helps to have a heavier line. To me, a fast rod is just a stiffer rod that loads when you get more line out. I know there are other factors... but I'm not a scientist- I just like to fish.
Interesting read. I don't want to get politically charged here, but I like what Romney had to say. In my experience- more bureaucracy equals more waste and red tape and ends up hurting anglers.
Thanks Lancer- well hosted swap- and thanks everyone else for tying such baller flies. Brian, that hog snare thing is awesome- to be honest they are all really good. Solid work men.
I ended up getting a free replacement reel after some serious back and forth. I really think I am going to sell it because I already replaced that reel and I like the replacement better. I do want a Curado.
Hey man, I straight lost my TFO so you are doing a lot better than me- I'd love to have just broken it. I had a day once where I broke both of the fly rods I brought in my jeep door before I ever got in the boat... that was the worst.
Ness- that is just a Gama worm hook that I rigged in that popper with a little redneck engineering. Really really weedless but kind of takes some time to get used to setting the hook- you have to wait a while to set the hook.
