Fishmeister Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 I have a 5wt, 4 piece TFO, good rod in your price range. Also never hurts to check the BPS outlet store. My brother in law picked up a nice Redington 6wt a couple weeks ago for 90 bucks.
brittsnbirds Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 Joby- Out of curosity, having not thrown a Sage Launch what is the difference in the LST to the Sage Launch? I threw a high end Sage once and liked it but the $$ was out of my league. The guys at Cabelas have recommended the LST over the Sage. Are they just pushing their product or is there little or no difference? I know when I bought my 3wt LST with the overweighted GPX line at their recommendation, it turned out to be a SWEET little set up. It is my preferred rod for the parks and small streams. I have gotten used to the medium fast action. When I go to my TFO with the medium action it feels real sluggish. I have to slooow down and take my time. Hence the reason that I am interested in this thread. I am thinking I will pick up a medium fast 4 wt to replace my TFO to complete my arsenal! Then maybe look for a 6wt to top it off!! Next time I am there I may have them string a Launch up and take it outside for a test drive! Excellant thread thanks Puff- Pat
Paola Cat Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 I've owed a LST and a TFO Pro for quite some time. I recently purchased a Launch. As far as the actions are concerned, the LST is the fastest and the TFO Pro is the slowest for me. The Launch is in-between for me. I actually looked at the Launch based on the recommendation of JobyKSU. Went to my local BPS and picked up a 9' 5 weight and convinced them that I needed to go out and cast it. From the time I picked it up, it felt great. Casting was effortless. I took advantage of a customer appreciation discount and ended up ordering a Launch from Feather-Craft. I found myself gravitating to this rod during the last part of the C&R at BSSP. I loaded it with a SA Mastery Trout DT and have absolutley no complaints. I own lots of fly rods .... including high end Sage and Orvis rods. The Launch is a great rod for the price. PC Cheers. PC
JobyKSU Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 Pat - I could not give you a fair comparison of the Launch and LST: I am a bit biased against Cabela's rods and abslutely in love with my Launch. So that's my disclaimer. I haven't spent time fishing the LST, but I seem to recall that it felt much faster than the Launch and didn't fit my casting stroke nearly as well. As far as the launch - it is an effortless rod to cast, has plenty of backbone, and yet will allow for fantastically delicate presentations. I would say that the rod is one of the most versatile that I've cast. As you can see, I have spread my addiction to Paola Cat and a few others, too. I don't think that everyone should necessarily buy a Launch, but if it's in your price range then you should definitely cast one to see if it is for you. Hope this helps! - JobyKSU ::. brittsnbirds Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Joby- Looks like I will by trying out a launch in the near future. My aching ole shoulder coulder could use some relief!! thanks Pat
patfish Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 I'll never buy a fly-rod that doesn't come with a lifetime warranty. I don't know if I'm clumsy or stupid or the scary combination of both.....
Members stephen seward Posted March 21, 2008 Members Posted March 21, 2008 I'll never buy a fly-rod that doesn't come with a lifetime warranty. I feel the same way. I'd rather spent $200 on something I can get fixed or replaced anytime, than $100 for something I'll have to replace.
strangercreek Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 I have never broken a rod (due to stepping on it, car door, tree etc). However I did have a rod that after fishing set it in the back of my truck and the tip section snapped in two, a clean break. It was a white river classic and was two years old. I took it to the store and they replaced it with no hassle. I really like that rod blank over other higher end rods I have owned for some reason. The action works perfectly for me.
Members Robert Posted March 26, 2008 Members Posted March 26, 2008 A TFO series one is a great buy at $99.99. The warranty is lifetime unlimited. For and additional $15.00 at BPS you can get the rod with a Hobbs Creek II wide arbor reel.
zsmith62 Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Five years ago, I went to bass pro and picked up a 6 wt. hobbs creek combo outfit. That was my first fly rod, and have only bought one more (Sage) that I use for bass. I've never had a single problem with the rod or reel, and I've bounced that thing off of blacktop, gravel, you name it and still no damage. The line is surprisingly good too, It lasted for four seasons before I retired it to backup status. Most of my buddies bought bps rods too, simply because they are easy on the wallet. None of them have had any issues, and I've casted them all, with no quibbles. One of them has a classic, another has a dogwood canyon, and one even has an indian point model, and they are all excellent rods for the money. I may not have much experience with anything other than the white river models or the sage, I have yet to find a reason to change. Zach Smith
