I was gonna try to turkey hunt on the Forestry land around TR this spring. Has anyone done this before and are there very many birds? I was hoping to turkey hunt till noon then crappie fish later but that's not looking too promising now.

I see and hear quite a few while fishing. Dont know if it was huntable ground though. Last bunch I saw was in the mouth of long creek at the end of the bluff down from the marina. looked like all hens and jakes. Stockton is good for that type hunting. Anywhere you can beach the boat you can hunt , almost

Great place for that kind of activity is in the Shell Knob, Big Creek to Baxter Area. Lots of Birds, all on Mark Twain National Forest or ground that for the most part unhunted. Start at Big Creek and work toward Baxter on either side of the lake, Tons of Birds.

You can also maybe find a crappie in the area if you look really really hard.

Good Luck

Go over to the wilderness area off 39-4 and 39-1 and also forest service ground around campers point area. bring a sherpa with you to climb the hills chasing birds.

Like Bill said, there is alot of turkey's in the Shell Knob area.I have a cabin at the end of Big Creek and we hunt every year a day or two when possible. 2 years ago we sat up on 2 gobblers that wouldn't shut up and in 20 minutes was done with the prettiest wild birds I ever seen.

That is the same area as the Big Creek area that I just described to you, only on the other side of 39-1. That is a long penesula, and 39-1 runs down the middle of it. James River on one side Big Creek to Baxter on the other. Lots of Mark Twain National forrest.

If I were hunting from a boat, I would probably hunt the Big Creek side. From a car, where ever.

If you can't find a bird to kill in this area, you better stick with fishing or what ever else you may do.

If you are sitting at the mouth of Big Creek or White Oak on opening morning and the sun comes up you will easily hear 20 plus birds in every direction to work.

If you hunt both weeks of the season, and hear or see two other hunters I would find it hard to believe.

Like Bill said. My parents live down 39-1 towards the kanakuk camp. Over the years I have been in these woods and have heard alot of birds on the James side of the road where I spend most of my time while fishing. seen alot of turkeys along the road and hearing them along the hill sides while fishing in the spring. I personally have not hunted these woods as I have a farm in north missouri where i spend most of my hunting time, but from getting in the woods looking fo hog sign you will not be disapointed hunting this area.
