No expert here, but since i loosened my drag(not to the point of backlash) I set alot harder. My drag is set lose enought for a hard set then is adjusted appropriately during the fight.

Supposing you are fly fishing right? If so, you have the line pinched between your finger and the handle of the rod during the hookset right? I leave my drag set at a certain level that I am comfortable with and very rarely have to mess with it (that is the last thing I want to do when fighting a fish I have to put on the reel.) I really can't recommend setting the hook without having a good hold of the line with either a hand or pinched between the handle.

I may have totally mis-read your post though. :)

You can't set the hook on a fly rod like a bass on a baitcaster. I was always taught to secure the line in your hand or pinched to the handle and lift the rod up high. The technique has worked for me but would like to hear from some of our more knowledgable members.

No you are correct, I'm flyfishing and I think that a good deal of my problem is NOT detecting the strike. I don't know how many times I've lifted the line to cast and have either hooked one or missed another.

I've tried watching the indicator more (but also rubber neck around at the eagles/ducks/cranes/sky/other fishermen/etc) and maybe I just don't catch it--without an indicator I don't feel that I'm fishing at the proper depth.

Am I not keeping the line tight enough or what?

Having to much slack in the line could be a big issue IMHO. I'd give watching my slack the next time out and see if your hookups improve. Brian offered great advice on keeping a finger on the line, helps detect the strike also.
