bobw Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 Hey guys, I just purchased a new Mossberg 835 with the thumb hole stock. I have shot 3" and 31/2" shells thru it to try and find the best losd. I replaced the X Factor tube with a Primos Jelly Head tube, but I am stll not happy with the patterns at 40 yds. I am averaging 13-14 pellets no matter if its a 3" or 31/2". Any one have a favorite for this gun?
jdmidwest Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 What size pellets are you using? That would be a good pattern for a #4, if you need more pellets drop down to a #5 or #6 to get better shot density. I assume you mean 13-14 pellets in a turkey head target. Troutn Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 They are a bit pricey but you might look at the Heavy-13 loads and Nitro's. I personaly like the Notro's, but they are not cheap. I prefer the 4x5x6 in a 3.5". They shoot really well out of my Remington 1187. Here is there link, it has all kinds of uselful info on it. http://www.nitrocompany.com/pattern.htm
bobw Posted April 6, 2008 Author Posted April 6, 2008 I shot fives and sixes. The 3 1/2" were Winchester Supreams in a 6 shot. The 3" were Federal Perminum in 5 shot. I guess this may not be too bad. 13 pellets in the head/neck area, I kind of thought the 3 1/2" might deliver more of a group being there's 1/4oz more shot. You only need 1pellet in the righ place. I may try some Hevi Shot, thoes things are so expensive you can't shoot many for a pattern.
Terry Beeson Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 I'm a big fan of Hevi-Shot although I'm not a big fan of Mossberg. Yeah, Hevi-Shot is expensive, but you don't need more than one to take a bird, right? Yeah, patterning might be a bit more expensive, but I think you'd be happy in the long run... bobw Posted April 6, 2008 Author Posted April 6, 2008 I hear a lot of guy's talk about Mossberg. The complaint is the fore arm rattles. I have shot 8 or 10 rounds, not enought to break it in, but the gun is tight. No rattles, yet. When I was at Bass Pro looking at this gun, one of the other guy's looking at a Remington for his son, said he has an 835 and it was a much better gun than the 500 or the 535. So far I like it. The 20" barrel is short and easy to handle. Has sling studs, makes it easy to cary, and the thumb hole stock is very comfortable to hold and shoot. I have a plain 870 I have been turkey hunting with the past few years but I wanted something short and easier to handle and cary. I think the gun will be fine, just need to find something it likes.
Members Pastor Posted April 7, 2008 Members Posted April 7, 2008 I have AN 835 and I love it. For a time I was about to thow it away though. I bought the tightest choke that hastings made for it and had the same results that you did. I ask some guys about it (after I had spent 50 dollars on the choke and 50 dollars on different shells) and they told me that my choke was to tight. Sounded funny to me but I tried the double x that mosberg recomends for that gun and I went from about 15 pellets in a turkey head at 30 yards to 66 using 3.5" winchester #5s. the hasting choke was a .675 and the Mosberg was a .690. did the trick for me. bobw Posted April 14, 2008 Author Posted April 14, 2008 Tried the Hevi shot 3 1/2" #5 turkey loads this weekend. They are the deal. At 40 yds. 21 pellets in the head/neck area. A plus, they don't kick nearly a hard as the 3 1/2 Winchester's. I did find the gun shoots high, not much I can do about it. The sights came from the factory on the gun. But I will just have to remember to aim at the chest. Thanks for the tip on the Hevi Shot, ready to go to the woods. Them and my new B Mobile decoy should do the trick.
Terry Beeson Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Yep... That's Hevi Shot for you... My third shell in the duck blind is usually a Hevi Shot load. I've had good luck when I need to "reach out and touch" a duck on his way out of range...
