SRV1990 Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 ....Use your electronics to find these fish out in deeper water, once you find them hang on they are feeding.. Good Fishing Capt. Don Don, just curious, for those of us without a boat, who rent and only have one meager piece of electronics on the boat -- and sometimes it aint much -- what chance do we have? Can we still get a good enough read on what's going on below even with very basic electronics? Please note: I'm very "green" when it comes to using electronics, so it may not really matter anyway Thanks, Tom "You can always justify putting off a decision... but you can't put off the results of indecision."

Please note: I'm very "green" when it comes to using electronics, so it may not really matter anyway Thanks, Tom If all you have is a flasher unit you can still locate fish with it. Set it for a double echo, by that I mean if you are in 30ft of water set the sensitivity to read 60 ft. The flashes you see between 30- 60 are fish. Thats how I used to find them until they came out with a paper graph. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. SRV1990 Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 Denjac, the boats we rent are equipped with one very basic fishfinder, either Eagle or Humminbird, mounted on the console. The guy in back can see it, the guy up front - working the trolling motor - cannot. Not being that experienced at using one to begin with I feel like we are at a huge disadvantage on such a large reservoir as Table Rock. Any suggestions? As always, Thanks!! denjac Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 Tom, those electronics you mentioned should do the trick. If you mark fish throw out a marker buoy. Or do like me since my front locater isnt working, have the guy in the back of the boat keep watch on it. You wont be able to see your bait on those locaters, but who cares. Or better yet hire Bill or Don for a day, they are the best locaters I know of. then go back and fish there spots for the rest of your trip. Money well spent. I am sure Don or Bill has better advise , but thats my two cents. Another tip i have found, after the spawn about 50% of the docks will hold fish, and at normal pool the fronts of them are best if they have 20 + water in front of them. Thats just my style though love the docks. Idle buoys hold fish too check them out. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. MOBass Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 I saw a couple of good questions that I would like to see the expert answers on. 1)Are you leaving the bail open (assuming you are using a spinning reel) when the grub is sinking? 2)Is anyone using scent? For myself I have been closing the bail. My thinking, right or wrong is that I have a little more control if a fish hits it on the fall. I also use garlic as a cover scent. I don't know if it really does anything for the fish but it make me more confidant so I'll just keep using it for the mental edge.
Trav Posted May 6, 2008 Author Posted May 6, 2008 I just got back from BPS and you guys werent kidding. It was slim pickings. I did get some 4"milky shad power grubs, some pearl white 4"fat albert grubs in both single and twin trailer, and some 4"yum blue glimmer pepper muy grubs. There werent any BPS X Grubs in the salt and pepper or the milky. I got the las four packs of 1/4 oz darter heads and had to settle for 3/8oz finnesse heads for there wasnt any 3/8 darters left. I also picked up a couple SB just for kicks. Looking at the weather reports, I picked up a bull frogg togg suit. Had a feeling my old army poncho wasnt going to be comfortable enough. Anyway, I have enough to get in trouble with tomorrow. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Whack'emGood Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 Good luck tomorrow Trav. Go get'em. Swim that grub sloooooooowwwwwwwwwww. Fishing Buddy Don House Posted May 6, 2008 Fishing Buddy Posted May 6, 2008 I saw a couple of good questions that I would like to see the expert answers on. 1)Are you leaving the bail open (assuming you are using a spinning reel) when the grub is sinking? 2)Is anyone using scent? Are you leaving the bail open. When I count the bail is open so it will sink straight down. Once I get to 10 or 15 I close the bail and start to roll it back to the boat SLOW! Is anyone using Scent?? I'm not, I have some but it does not seem to matter.. I feel that is something of your own choice.. Now, Jigs, Tubes, bottom bouncing baits yes I do.. Well really all of these have scent now, salt, garlic ect.. Electronics, well it does help but not a major stopping point. You can use a basic graph to locate the depth of the fish, that is the key... Even drop shot fishing I don't really need a good graph, I just need to see where the bait or the fish are suspending that will get me close.. On other days it tell me if the fish are on the bottom or suspended, makes all of the difference in the world.. Also really good to see that tree under your boat and how far up does it come. So if you find what is fish suspended in 25 feet of water, then look for everything that is in that 25 feet range, tree tops, dock cables, brush piles, I think you get the point.. Denjac is right don't over look the front of these bigger dock in deeper water, these fish are hanging on the dock cables.. That is one if my favorite way to guide folks and that bite is coming really soon or just after the spawn or some of the first few waves.. Good Fishing Everyone.. Capt. Don Capt.
