Jason Essary Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Ive got 2 ?s. Did the point bite die, havent had it produce all week. Maybe im in the wrong area, working the indian point area. Did they finally move up to spawn? Now, for all u smart guys out there. I was next to a large oak tree trunk in 6 foot of water the other day and noticed about a ten thousand small fish fry huddled next to the surface in the shade of the tree. All still had a little of their egg sacks on them and were about an 1/8 of an inch long. What likely species were they??? Maybe White bass, shad, Ive never saw so many at once. thought they were to big to be shad but dont think the bass have spawned yet, at least they are maybe now but shouldnt have hatched yet. Gary Lange Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 It could be Bass as the guy I was with caught a Spawned out Smallmouth. It appears some have spawned and others are holding out for a better looking Girlfriend. Respect your Environment and others right to use it!
Whack'emGood Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 We caught a couple of clearly spawned out SM this last weekend and the week before also. All KY we caught were clearly prespawn and looking ready to pop. It seems like alot of the SM (in my experience) have been moving up and getting it done in the past couple of weeks or so, and the other 2 species are still mostly staging. However, the grub bite really fell of this past weekend for me as opposed to being really good the week before. I suppose it is because they either moved up to spawn or backed up a little with all of these little fronts we have been having. Just my two cents... Mr. Babler or Mr. House will know for sure though. I have been watching for some more really good info though... I will be going Saturday and I have a bad feeling that I won't be able to find them. Two weeks ago they were hammering it like gangbusters..... Last week, ok but not great.... This week--------? I hope it doesn't continue downhill but, like I said, I don't have a good feeling. May have to scrape for them and figure out the puzzle again. Fishing Buddy Don House Posted May 15, 2008 Fishing Buddy Posted May 15, 2008 Guys, yes I think it is Bass fry also, I seen some today myself, we had this same discussion in my boat today as to what they were. My guess it would be some of the early spawner's and there fry are hatching. Not sure but a guess, maybe Mr. B can give his two cents on this one.. Next the point bite is still on as of today, it was not easy but once we put the puzzle together it paid off, with some good keeper fish all day long. We used our electronics to find the fish on the points, most in the morning 15 - 25 feet afternoon around 25 to 35 feet on the bottom or suspended in 15 - 20 feet. Baits of choice 5" Green Pepper Zoom Grub on a 3/8 ounce dart head, slow rolled back to the boat and don't let anyone tell you that you can't fish the grub with no wind, you can!! We did very well even with that light north wind in the afternoon. Next on the points and side of points topwater action with red fin type baits. With the great cloud cover today and calm winds early there were a number of fish coming up and busting shad on these same points. We were throwing right past the swirling fish and cranking back to the boat. All of this from State Park to K/C and back including Indian Point area. So now please save some points for us working guys and get out of the bushes you will like it! Good Fishing Everyone Capt. Don Capt. Fishing Buddy Don House Posted May 15, 2008 Fishing Buddy Posted May 15, 2008 We were using a Mikey Jr a red fin type bait from Jackall, no spooks because they were crushing the Mikey Jr. It's just red fin time!! Bill Babler Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 Yes, those are bass fry. I believe LM. There are a few spawned out SJ's and very few Ky's. We had one of those good ole days yesterday, with Lots and Lots of fish to the boat, mostly the ones mentioned above. Only a couple of spawned out the rest fat and ready to do it. Our bite early was a topwater point bite, with 7 good fish to the boat and another 10 blowups that we missed, thru no cause of the fish. Me included. Started at 5:45. Don had given me a Mikey JR. and I could not get them to eat this great looking bait. The boys were wacking them on a fin. I believe I just didn't get it in front of one that wanted it. It sounds like a 5 hp. I am thinking of hooking it to my electric battery and using it for a trolling motor. Great looking bait. I'll get them to eat it. Bite was great early on top, till about 6:45 then went to the grub and did it agian. It petered out for me about 10 AM when the sun hit the water for about 30 minutes. Sun re-covered and we started rigging the insides of the flat points in 14 to 28 and got really rich. Only fished two locations all day that we didn't get a bite. I don't believe I was that good, they were just biting. I have been covered up and continue to be till next week. Good luck out there. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Whack'emGood Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 Mr. H and Mr. B... Thanks much for that great info, once again. My confidence had been shot down last weekend, and I have been looking for more of that great pattern-specific info to give me the confidence back (that what I am doing on the water is correct). That will get me going again. I can't wait to get after em' on Saturday!! You guys are great. Keep up the good work-- your paying customers must be loving it!!! But we really appreciate it too, as always. Good luck on the water, Whack'em "Success builds confidence, and you have to learn to trust your instincts and forget about fishing the way a tournament is supposed to be won. Gary Lange Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 Well, my confidence is running medium to high now that I have used this great advice and caught some fish on the points. I will be out bright and early Friday Morning out of the State Park chasing my dreams. Now I got to get some Dart Heads in 3/8oz and some 5" Zoom Grubs. Respect your Environment and others right to use it!

We did very well even with that light north wind in the afternoon. - You said it Don. - We were in the KC area all day yesterday and had the same results. Mainly down deeper though. - The frustrating part of the grub bite was that I deeply hooked several keepers (but were able to gently get the hooks out for a nice release). - These nice keepers would just lay on that grub. I would just feel some light resistance like I had a leaf or something on my grub, then when I would get them close to the boat, .........and they would go berzerk. - I've got an excellent rod that I love, cause I can always feel the lightest tick. But this grub bite is almost like they are following the grub to the boat, then when they grab it, maybe they still just keep coming my way or something?.........weird. - Anywho, it'll be interesting to see what this rain does?
