Members smallmouth man Posted May 26, 2008 Members Posted May 26, 2008 My dad and I went to Pomme on Saturday. We put in @ 6am and I had 4 bass in the boat (all on jig), including one keeper before we took cover for from the lighting around 7:30. We caught back on the water @ 8 and I kept on with the jig. My dad started landing fish on the crank. I caught a few more shorts and a keeper on jig. I switched to a shaky head and landed a 3lb on my 3rd cast. By 10 we had 9 keepers in the livewell. After the rain and clouds cleared we both started pitching jigs and my dad had a 3lb and 2.5lb in the same pocket to end the day around 3pm. we landed 18 keepers on the day. The 5 biggest went 10.12lbs. My dad also had 2 muskie on the crank and we had a 3' snake swimming right at our boat from the bank. We pulled away before it had a chance to visit with us. All fish came on jigs, crank, and shaky head. Am bite was strongest, but there was an all day bite. We are going back on Monday to see if we can do it again. Smallmouth Man

If you want fish to eat catch crappie or walleye they taste much better.
Members BILLYBASSSHACK Posted May 26, 2008 Members Posted May 26, 2008 KEEPing BASS! WHO CARES? What area were you in? I went last week an I feel the bite was better as your moved North from bolivar landing? Dam area was pretty hot Wednesday.
Members jcmojo Posted May 26, 2008 Members Posted May 26, 2008 Everyone to their own. That's why they put a limit on bass.
Members smallmouth man Posted May 26, 2008 Author Members Posted May 26, 2008 What is wrong with you keeping bass! If you want fish to eat catch crappie or walleye they taste much better. First off, I said they were in the livewell. Just like they would be in any catch and release tournament. With that said if I am eating fish then I agree, walleye are best. Although bass are fine to eat. You either like to eat fish or you dont. I am not that picky. Anyway, to answer you; If we were going just for food, we would fish for walleye. We were fishing for practice. But if someone wants to eat bass, let it be. Your are not the food police. Smallmouth Man

We went up river a little, we fished stinking creek, possum creek, and a little up passed possum. About 40% of the keepers had eggs. Water was 69-73 degrees. Smallmouth Man
Members pt1 Posted May 26, 2008 Members Posted May 26, 2008 What kind of person questions the keeping of bass. You are not in charge of anyone but yourself and you don't have to like what anyone else does. He is perfectly in the legal limits of the law and it is within his rights. Bass are very tasty and anyone who says they're not must not like eating fish of any kind or they have set up a mental block telling themselves Bass is BAD YUCK! This myth that all bass fishing done has to be catch and release or you're not an ethical fisherman is rubbish; and I'm sick of hearing about it. Catch and release is fine; but not for me. I don't practice it on anything unless it's under the legal length limit or over the daily limit. If you ask me I also think the limits are too restrictive; that's just my opinion. The great thing about this country though that we need to remember on Memorial Day is that we all have a right to speak our opinion and minds and share it with other people. We're all fisherman on here; lets just get along instead of trying to spread the tyranny of the "Ethical Bass Fisherman" and lets all just be fishermen and mind our own business!
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted May 26, 2008 Root Admin Posted May 26, 2008 This forum is about 2.5 years old and the question about keeping fish has been discussed many times. There are anglers on both sides of the issue and some on either side feel very strongly about it. In saying that, I would remind everyone if you want to discuss it, be nice. There's nothing wrong about keeping fish and there's nothing wrong with catch-n-release. Thank you very much for the report.
Trav Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 Im a very strict catch and release guy. (except for those farm fresh trout!) BUT, When Gramps was alive, he used to ask for a few bass to eat and I always obliged. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
techo Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 Good report Thanks. When I was in International Falls, people would throw the northern pike up on the bank to die. They were slimy icky creatures that were not worth eating and messed with the walley and small mouth. Out of towners would come from along way to catch this worthless fish. There seemed to be a great amount of discussion on it. I don't keep any fish, and I don't throw northern on the bank. A great many walleye fisherman did not care for small mouth up there either. Down here we have the perennial discussion of fishing beds or not, keeping bass or not. Thanks for the fishing report regardless of your beliefs. Tim Carpenter
