I'm in the market for a fly rod to use on my smallmouth adventures. I have been using a 5 wt, which is great fun when you do hookup, but it just won't cast the bigger flies I want to use. I found a great deal, possibly, on a TFO TiCr 8wt. Is that too much rod. I was thinking about a 7wt or maybe even a 6wt. Some of the flies I use are very wind resistant, but other are very heavy. I just don't want to get a rod that feels like I'm fighting the fish with a stick.

Because you have a 5wt, you would probably want to step up to a 7wt.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I carry a cheapo 8wt rod in the canoe, I use a 7wt line...I think its a bass bug taper, I can't remember because it's been on the reel so long :o .. I just add some 6lb pound mono for a leader and it works great. It throws wind resistant bugs just fine..I have just never gotten to technical smallie fishing...Dano (the frugal fly fisherman) B)

Definately worth looking at the new TiCR X 7'6 8wt and 6wt.

The 8wet great for heavier flies and sink tips etc. Very precise, put the fly where you want it and can do great durty on largemouth, throws short and long.

Was a big hit at the Smallmouth Rendezvous.

The 6wt is a lighter popper rod, good cross over for smaller lighter flies for smallies and trout.

Neither are broomsticks, but do have some guts isn the butt.

Anyone wants a test coast drop by the store.

Cheers

I use a 6wt for smallies and have never had a problem. But I did lose a Walleye once. Also had a huge trout spool me once on that rig...which has a click n pawl reel.

My 8wt TiCrX was acquired for Dorado and wading saltwater. It's also a good salmon rod. If I were targeting lunker largemouth bass I would use it also.
