My garden is just over an acre. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
bigredbirdfan Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 When is dinner at your house or dock? Like I said earlier. So much rain my tomatos are on the verge of rotting. Need a few days to dry out. We are getting 5 inches every 3-4 days.
Dutch Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 I haven't had that wilt stuff in 15 years on my tomatoes but it is there this year. I blame the excess rain. It is also drowning all the stuff I plant on the lower end of the garden.
Trav Posted June 25, 2008 Author Posted June 25, 2008 The soil on my hill is so rocky it is unfit to grow veggies in so I use raised beds and truck in my dirt. They drain much faster so all this rain has done nothing to my crops except turn them into monsters. Im probably using too much fertilizer as well but boy do they look big and healthy. Some of my corn is 9 feet tall and almost all my tomatoe plants are in the 4 to 6 feet range. My squash are like bushes and are spilling all over everything else. My biggest issue every season are the bugs. Aphids and tomatoe worms being the biggest pests. This year I have been sevin dusting pretty heavy. Im crossing my fingers that it will do the trick. bigredbirdfan Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 For the Aphids a couple of years ago I bought lady bugs that were shipped to me by mail. The will eat every aphid anywhere near your garden. The problem is the sevin on other stuff will kill them. I still have lady bugs galore even when I bought a couple hundred a few years ago. Down there in those hills there are just lots of every kind of critter.
patfish Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Trav, I dunno if you have a place down that way, but up here in STL, I go to the bug store and get a bag of 1000 lady bugs and put them on my mater plants for aphid control. As long as there are aphids to eat, they hang around. I use about a third of the bag at a time and they keep just fine in the fridge until you need some more. Plus - its really cool to watch the bugs come to life in the bag when they warm up.... trippy.
Trav Posted June 25, 2008 Author Posted June 25, 2008 Your right about the critters red. I have a 8 foot fence for the furry ones and the squirrels still manage to steal some strawberrys. The birds really nail the grapes as well. I just have learned to share a little of my bounty. I have known about the lady bugs but if I dont dust the worms will be too much. So I kind of weigh the pros and cons. I learned to plant ten times more than I will eat to make up for it all. Guess the critters have to eat too. Haha "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. bigredbirdfan Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 You better watch out. My red sunburned body might come up there after a few adult bevs and eat some stuff too.
Trav Posted June 26, 2008 Author Posted June 26, 2008 Haha Just watch out for my big red dog! "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
