If I were to head up to the Niangua tomorrow (probably Barclay CA again) Sunday afternoon, how late do you suppose I'd have to get there to avoid most of the floaters?

Little Known Fact: This weekend is Gay Pride Weekend (their term not mine) on the Niangua.. Every year we have droves of homosexuals camp out on the niangua and float during the day... Just thought Iwould give you fair warning..

From my experience (regardless of the sexuality of the floaters) the canoes are usually mostly off of the river by 6 pm and no one really puts in until 9 am, usually the majority of people putting in to party are going to put in from 10 am to noon... The major put ins are Bennett Public Access to NRO and NRO to Barclay or Prosperine.. If you can just avoid these times you should be ok...

Also bear in mind that the best time to catch trout (dusk and dawn) is about the worst time for partiers to be floating...

Basically don't hit hte river at noon cause the only thing you catch on the river at noon is a buzz and possibly a little flack from the floaters or the MDC/Water Patrol...

Good luck....

Thanks for the tips. I'll probably head up there tomorrow afternoon and try to hit one of the accesses around 6:00. It's partly an experiment to see how much decent fishing I can get in if I leave right after work during the week and still be back at a reasonable time. But it's mostly me still getting the hang of this fly tackle.

I got down to Bennett Springs Access a little after six last night and there were still people laying around in the water by the canoe launch, so I turned around and headed over the Barclay CA and pretty much had the river to myself. Went back to that gravel bar near the bend on the east side of the CA. Had a few hits but still didn't land anything. I know they were there--I could see flashes of white all over the place from them feeding, but hey, I'm still figuring stuff out--only my third time out with a fly rod. Maybe next time!

I fished until dark and headed back to the car. It was a beautiful night! When I got back to the parking lot, I saw a few locals had set up by the canoe launch to do some sucker fishing. They said that three or four days prior, someone had caught a couple of lunkers over by the overhanging tree that's across from the launch. Maybe I'll try over there next time.

The funny part is that gay pride weekend is probably the better time to be on the river. I'd much rather fish behind that group than a bunch of beer swilling tatooed rednecks. I bet the gay pride groups even pick up their trash!

Unfortunately you are mistaken... I was there and I can attest to the fact that "they" (the gay groups) were just as drunk, just as rude, twice as perverse (groups floating down the river screaming "Has anyone seen my transvestite? She has a monsterous XXXX hanging out of her XXXX!") nor did they have a problem with tossing their trash in the river (mainly from dumping their canoes)

The only marked difference I saw on that weekend was an increase in bare skin exposed and perverse acts in public. And I defend alternate lifestyles...

I saw one group of guys dump their raft and distribute around 25 cans downstream. I helped them right their craft and asked them, politely, to pick up their trash.. Two commented that it wasn't their trash, and the others insisted that it wasn't their problem... A direct quote from one was "If you are so worried about it, why don't you dive down there and pick it up?"

I don't care what your sexuality is, you don't trash our river and get away with it... So I beat them downstream to the agents and asked the agents to do a 'cavity search".... And to ask them politely to not be so crude and perverse on a river with children nearby...

Floated from Prosperine to Lead Mine Friday night through Saturday eve. I was struck with a liitle bit of irony regarding the trash in the river. It now appears that the river is completely covered in the orange mesh trash sacks that they pass out to put your trash in. There were some stretches where you can stand in one spot and see 8 or 9 of them caught in root wads.

We did catch some fish. A couple of unintentional trout, largemouth, smallmouth and goggleye. Saw three really nice bucks, turkeys and a lot of wood ducks. Overall a really nice float. We put in on Friday at 6 pm and took out Sat at 5 pm and only saw 5 other canoes in all that time and that wasnt' until the last mile of the float.

Was they hitting on anything special?
