This is what we call "gut pigs" - trout that live under our docks that eat trout guts. They get big and fat - no work for their meals. This last summer we had a rainbow we guessed at 15 pounds under our dock for a month. Thought it was a brown at first because of the size but with the clear water we could see the color and spots. My dad caught one after a rain quite a few years back on a 1/32 oz white crappie jig (they still work great) that was around 4 pounds and had a gut like that big 'un. Steve Smith Posted November 7, 2005 Share Posted November 7, 2005 Phil; I saw three big rainbows caught out of Roaring River. The last week of the season, an 8.5 and an 8.75 were caught. There was a 12 pounder caught on the last day on the 31st. As near as I could tell, all rainbows. Garry is a friend and after seeing the photos last night, I took time today to visit him at his office. I just had to shake his hand and hear the "story". I was astounded to see the tiny fly (barbless no less) he used to catch that monster. Garry tells me it all happened real fast. Not a huge fight as I would have assumed. It circled the boat, nearly found the trolling motor, then was in the boat! He's still pinching himself. Interesting, Seth's suggestion that the fish was full of eggs was right on the mark (according to Garry).
