bigredbirdfan Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 I bought a tracker boat with an 80 hp 2 stroke Mercury motor 1987 model. I have no owners manual (which I need to fork out he money and buy) and I am wondering what issues regarding fall and winter I need to watch out for. It was owned by a detail oriented person, that being said, what service should I have this fall/winter and where? I will store it outside in the elements and wish to fish it this winter.

mosouthpaw Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 yea change the lower unit oil. On your last trip to the lake disconnect the gas and run your motor outta gas. Get home and remove your spark plugs and shoot fogging oil into each piston. W/o your plugs in hit your key to start your motor basically enough to move the pistons one or two revoultions this ensures your fogging oil is dispersed in your motor. Put your plugs back in. Put your motor down so water doesnt collect in the hub/lower unit and then go crack a beer....

mosouthpaw Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 the fogging oil will just smoke a bit once you hook up the gas and prime the bulb. It might take a bit longer to fire up the cylinders but dont worry they are lubed with the fogging oil. Fogging oil serves to keep rust from forming in the cylinders and to provide lubrication of the pistons if they sit for a long time. Some people put pure oil (tw3) in lieu of fogging oil but that makes it harder to start in the spring if you ask me. If you fish over the winter you shouldnt have to change the lower unit oil since youchanged it in the fall. Changing the lower unit oil is easy and since you use it most in the summer thats when youd have a tendency to get water in the lower. If you changed the lower unit oil and it has lots of noticeable water you should seek your nearest mechanic and find the problem.
Dutch Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 If you plan to keep on fishing then you don't need to do anything. If you will have some down time then use a fuel stabilizer. I never stop fishing thus I don't use anything in my gasoline. With the ethanol in the gas you probably should be looking at adding a water seperating fuel filter to your motor.
Guest kevinkirk Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Another good way to winterize and store your boat and motor would to let me keep it for you. I will keep it in the water enough to is sure that it in good runing condition next summer when you want it back. hahah
Bman Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Yes I was wondering the same thing about fishing all Winter. oneshot I'm NOT an expert on outboards. My jet boat dealer has told me that if you use the motor every month during the winter, don't worry about winterizing. I have found this to be true with my Yammie 2 stroke jet. The only good line is a tight line

Well I talked with a shop couple days ago and told them I was putting Sea Foam in my gas. They told me with the ethanol in the gas its not doing any good, because it won't mix well.So I decided to quit messing with the problem to just put fresh gas in my Boat every time I take it out.Get home put it in my Pickup. Kind of a pain but I think its the best way of dealing with this. oneshot
