motroutbum Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 I use Tiemco almost exclusively. I have had way too many bad experiences with Dai Riki, Daiichi. They break too often in a vice or when you bend the barb down. I think that they ware cheaply made. Mustad does make a scud hook, the C49s. I tie alot with the 2499 spbl, 100spbl, 5263bl, 2457. I think that the TMC 200R is the worst hook ever made. I really like the curve of the shank, but the point and bend of the hook are way to short for such a long hook. For big flies, I like gamakatsu hooks especially for salt water patterns. There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!
brittsnbirds Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 bum- Where are you getting your 100spbl's? Are they available in the 100's? Pat
Paola Cat Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Pat ... you might want to try www.blueribbonflies.com or www.kaufmannsstreamborn.com. PC Cheers. PC
motroutbum Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 i can get them for you in 100's There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 30, 2008 Author Root Admin Posted August 30, 2008 Hey MO- who else carries TMC besides Wapsi?
motroutbum Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Umpqua is the major carrier. There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!
3wt Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 At least in smaller than 20's, the Gamakatsu or however it's spelled, will break, bend, and tick you off to no end. JUNK. Usually you won't notice it until you start getting strikes on a dry and NEVER setting the hook. I think they're more of a big streamer/saltwater brand.
DoveTail Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Buying in the 100s is the way to go. I like Mustad due to the hook color, probably doesn't matter but I don't like bright shinny hooks.
bikehikefish Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Mustad 94840 for dries, 3906B for nymphs in sizes 12,14,16,18. Some other Mustad styles (don't remember the number) in size 10 for woolly buggers. Don't remember the brand of scud hooks in size 16 and 18 (whatever you had in your shop at the time Phil) I used to buy from Cabelas, but now I just pick up a box from my local fly shop - I like to buy 100 at a time.
