Fishhand Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Does anyone know if Palin is or was in favor of the Pebble Mine project?
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted September 11, 2008 Root Admin Posted September 11, 2008 Kevin- do you even know what Pebble is? You should research it before you rattle off. Pebble Mine is right in the heart of THE largest sockeye fishery in the world. If the mine goes bad, it will poison the river forever. They say they can do this deal safely but even if they pay huge fines for any spill, the mine is worth Billions. It will happen I've heard, unfortuneately. It's on private ground. The feds can slow it down but I doubt if they can stop it. And Sara is against it.
Trav Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Drilling has come a long way. I think the salmon are safe., but I think they will take extra care considering. The human Anthill will eventually destroy the planet anyway. Why stop the inevitable now? "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Thom Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 I got seven reasons to stop it now. They are named lydia, Valerie, T.J., Andy, Melanie, Zachary and Jessica. (my grandchildren) There are some things in life that are worth the price of ommision. Unfortunately Phil is right Billions VS the future is a hard fight to win. Just my 2cents. I wonder if that drilling were going in just up across bull creek on Taney if trav would have a different thought about the human ant hill? I am sure we would all be signing petitions. Thom Harvengt
trout fanatic Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 I have been a supporter of drilling for more oil for quite awhile-but with reservations. Drilling for oil IS a form of mining and I am concerned that any oil drilling legislations will wind up with all sorts of tacked on legislation that will allow big mining operations to mine pretty much anyplace they want. Drilling may have come a long way but it doesn't seem to have reached Pennsylvania or W Virginia yet. All kinds of mountain stripping and leeching problems exist throughout that area (this is with respect to mining particularly not necessarily drilling). I have serious reservations that big mining operations or the friendly politicians they have in their back pockets will be able to control themselves. Quite a problem, isn't it?
Thom Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Trout fanatic: You nailed the problem exactly. Read some of the inditement of kickbacks and perks of Stevens from alaska which is outrageous. Greed is the problem. If there was a way to keep those operations in check it might work but when you have the Fox watching the hen house it won't work. Before anyone jumps on this as who's at fault..... There are plenty of the same greedy politicians on both sides of the aisle that can't resist the temptation of the perks that big dollars offer. I worked in a service department of a large corporation for years and I always had bidders offering card, rams, and blues tickets and other vacation etc types of deals to buy inferior over prided equipment.. My job and integrety was worth more than the lucradive offers that I was offered. Thom Thom Harvengt
Danoinark Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 The same with big oil. I am aghast that the politicians haven't seen the importance to develop alternative fuels and means of energy. There is such an abundance of natural gas, technology has advanced the use of solar and wind power and quite frankly I would not be opposed to the further enhancement of nuclear power plants which by the way are the most cost effective way of making electricity. Drilling for oil is only a short term fix. We must produce other ways to fuel our vehicles and power our homes. ps. Oh, I just figured out why the politicos haven't wakened to new sources. The Oil lobby = Big bucks. Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
bigredbirdfan Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 How are we supposed to support a world with so many (really too many) people without extracting resources? Nobody will take me seriously, but the problem with all of this is population control. There is no need for everyone to have six or eight kids. Food shortages, high oil demand and other supply issues are all attributed to too many people. 1 kid to replace you when you die is enough. I'm all for freedom and liberty, but I know what is causing the world's issues.
Quillback Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 I take you seriously Big Red, population growth is the root cause of most of the earth's problems. More and more competition for resources. And everybody wants to have their 40 acres and a mule
Trav Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Thom, If there was oil in my back yard, you can bet that I would move and let them drill. My cousin owns an oil feild in Texas. He also has several bass ponds in that field. Not a one has been effected by the pumps. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
