Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted March 14, 2006 Root Admin Share Posted March 14, 2006 Thought we'd see what we get when asking this question in regards to bass fishing... Think about it!
Brian K. Shaffer
I went with Action (of course) then Size. Size matters when dealing with bass and baitfish. I used baitfish as an example.. as I know they eat other stuff, crawfish and other whatnot (dragonflies.. damsel flies.. mice.. worms ?!?!) But your bigger bass will target injured baitfish at dusk and dawn within thier area... so I would go with a big fly or lure with lots of action and lots of ability to push water and make sound and resemble closely enough to trigger a strike. This is my opinion on bass fishing with mainly flys.. and I know I am probably wrong.. so be it. I'll learn new techiniques in time. screaming reels - Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now. Wayne SW/MO
Action is real important, even when there is none. I'm torn between size and color for Bass. I believe size is only important when they are keying on some bait. I think color can often be a color, whether its a touch of Yellow for a Threadfin to red or chartreuse for the highlights on Crawdads. I think shape is irrelevant to the fish. We're not talking about a critter with reasoning, so triggers are the thing in my opinion. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman. mcp633
The only one that I can say for sure isn't that important to bass is the shape. It probably plays a role, but not the most important. The largest bass I ever caught was right at dusk, fishing for catfish. I was fast reeling my big wad of bait to recast, and the bass hit the doughbait. Wasn't particularly shaped like anything except a wad of doughbait. I figure the bass liked the action of the bait skimming accross the top of the water. mhall02
One of the bigger bass I've caught was on a wad of bread trying to catch a big grass carp in our farm pond. Humm, what was that fish thinking, it was just laying on the bottom? Most likely a fluke thing.
Al Agnew
Depends, imo. In clear water, bright light conditions: 1. Action 2.color 3.tie for shape and size. In murky water or low light conditions: 1. Action 2. Size 3. color 4. shape And by the way, when I say color, I don't think subtle differences in color really make much difference. Color is important to me only in how visible it is to the fish. So the important color differences are light or dark, bright or dull, not watermelon/red flake vs. watermelon/black flake. Gavin
I'd go with the following 1. Action 2. Color (Natural vs.Supernormal, Flashy v. Drab, etc) 3. Form (Size & Shape)
roy_eros
I think lure shape plays a much more important role than most people think. Look at the thousands of shapes plastic worms are made in, but we all know we have that favorite one.
Ealy
I think Action should be #1, followed by size. What about vibration and/or noise? In stained to dirty water those are probably a tie for first.
