Seth
Just curious what everybody's biggest rainbow and brown trout that you've caught on Taneycomo. Also, post a pic of it on here if you can. My biggest brown I've landed was 19.5 inches. I caught him this fall while down there fishing. My biggest rainbow was 27" with an 18" girth and weighed right at 10 pounds. I caught her on June 12, 2005 off of the Lazy Valley Resort fishing dock.

Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted October 29, 2005 Root Admin Share Posted October 29, 2005 Well... mine is from Taneycomo last winter- about 7 pounds caught on camera (video, no still pic). Was guiding for a fishing show and caught it by accident on a sculpin jig just down from the KOA. Accident because I wasn't supposed to fish on the show- was supposed to keep the "hosts" in fish which I did but become the "hog" when I landed the big bow. I have a copy of the show at least. Equal that - a 7 pound rainbow caught on the Russian River In Alaska last summer on a double yellow humpy. That was by far the most exciting rainbow. Steelhead - if you count that as a rainbow, I landed a 12 pound steely on the Pere Marquette 10 years ago on an egg fly. I'll have to scan the pic. Members John Smoot
Nice fish Seth. Phil, I really think if you tied some flies that resemble fish guts...a guts fly?...you could target those big gut slurpers that hang around the docks. I don't think you can legally use actual trout guts. Course, that may not be your idea of sport...

I used a white one to "match the hatch" since that fish was eating guts. It worked
Root Admin admin Posted October 29, 2005 Root Admin Share Posted October 29, 2005 Seth- my biggest rainbow list doesn't include rainbows I've caught from under my dock... please don't take offense... it's just me cause I live here... but those fish don't count for me. We were just watching a rainbow under our cleaning shack that would go over 10 pounds, another about 8 pounds. They're our pet pigs. Opps I posted under admin- sorry. I've often thought about riggin' a piece of t-shirt around a hook for a 'guts fly'. But, then I've always thougth unless I has some 20 lb test on, they'd just break me off on their way out to the deeper water. I kinda wish that the guts weren't dumped back in the lake the way they are...but I believe that that is the most eco way to handle guts. Oh, yeah. I've caught several big browns at Taneycomo. Probably 20 above 20". The largest was the pic Phil posted on this sight and at OzarkAnglers.com. He was probably 10-12 lbs. The biggest rainbow I've caught at Taney was a 20-incher I caught September 29, 2004. I've caught many larger rainbows on the San Juan in New Mexico. I have a pic of one I caught 4 years ago that was 27" and a fat dog. Probably 8 lbs. I still enjoy catching alot of fish. About the 3rd day, I may get more picky and try to pick off the big boys. So, many rainbows between 12" and 18".
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted October 30, 2005 Root Admin Share Posted October 30, 2005 San Juan- there's that river again... We leave tomorrow for the SJ!! I'm packed and ready. I'll bring back lots of pics and good stories hopefully. As for the pigs under the sinks... they are smarter than you think. I have guests who try all the time using even guts and don't hook them. And landing a fish that size is a feat-

So, many rainbows between 12" and 18". Sadly, she did not live. I hooked and landed her on 2lbs test and I had to battle her for quite a while becuase she kept going underneath them docks. I worked for almost an hour trying to get her revived after I landed her, but she never would come back. She would act like she wanted to swim off but then when I let her loose she just went belly up again. I would rather of let her swim off, but atleast I can say it aint becuase I didn't try to let her go. We hooked three other fish the same size as her that trip also that we did not land, so theres plenty more in there still thankfully. ...oh and Phil I am just curious, what is the biggest you've pulled from below your docks even though you don't count them. My biggest rainbow other than the big one I got by the cleaning station from Taney is around 18" or 19" that I caught up in the trophy area fly fishing.
