Murdoc Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Made a quick trip to Bennett Sat morning. The weather was wonderful to say the least! It didn't seem like there were a lot of people fishing. The river was in great shape. The water was fairly clear. I started up around the spring and caught a few there and started my walk about. I made it to the bridge and there were several fishing there. I looked over the bridge and there were a few trout but not a lot in there. I went just below the bridge in the shallow swifter water and really had a blast. I caught lots of fish there. It guess it was holding a lot of fish that got away from the crowd under the bridge. I met with a great bunch of friends from Columbia! Great to get to see them!!!! Smiles are free http://rdpflyrods.com/
Thom Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Murdoc Good report. I have never fished that area below the bridge in the fast water. How do you fish it and what flys did you use. I usually fish spring hole area down to the bridge or above the bridge before the bait area to the hatchery outlet area. Anyone else fished that fast water? Thanks Thom Thom Harvengt
jdmidwest Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 I always like the area below the bridge to the hatchery outlet. Of course, I never like to fish the long slow holes. I like faster water and sight fishing. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Murdoc Posted October 20, 2008 Author Posted October 20, 2008 The fish didn't want anything that was high in the water. I fished a San Juan worm with a very small weigh about a foot above it and then a palsa about 2 feet above it. It had to be on the bottom or no good like the Chiefs!!!! I ended up catching about 25 before 10am. Thanks Laker67. I wish you would have come over. Smiles are free http://rdpflyrods.com/

I was even too tired to make t-como Sat night. Kerry and I fished the lake today and caught 23 crappie that we had fresh for dinner. Hard to beat, crappie, cornbread, potatoes, and an apple pie. Those 23 crappie fed 6 people tonight. Later Murdoc.
flyfishmaster Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Thom, You asked about how to fish the riffle area (also know as the High Bank area) below the bridge. Here is one example link on this form that details some of the better flies to use in that area. http://ozarkanglers.com/forums/index.php?s...=13461&st=0 There is more info on this site if you search the BSSP, use the search word "Flies". That will give you about an hour or more worth of reading. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!

I fish them under an indicator and usually no deeper than 3-4 feet. Essentially, I fish them the same way as a mini-jig. Do I need to get it closer to the bottom?
rcguy Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Sounds like a good trip. Those shallow water fish feel like a whale on light tackle! I need to get down there bad but I have a lot going on in October. I do plan on going Nov 14th come hell or high water! Jerry
Murdoc Posted October 20, 2008 Author Posted October 20, 2008 Edward, It's actually the Chamois San Juan worm. Find one that gets very limp in water. If you have ever seen a drown worm in water it's on the bottom and trout see them there also. They can't resist!! It also looks like guts and you know where they clean fish at Bennett.
