We started fishing at 10:00 a.m. The water was dropping with 0 generation. Had a few new flies to try out and while I was rigging up, I had motroutbum throw one of the flies to some midging fish right next to the boat ramp. Second cast and fish on! The new primrose and pearl soft hackle did not take long to prove itself. We went up to the rocking chair area while the water was dropping and fished in the shallows at some more midging trout. This time we tried the new ostrich herl crackleback. The brown ones worked great. We picked up quite a few fish there then decided to move down to look out island. We pulled in at the bottom of the island and fished the slack water on the downstream side. Brown ostrich herl cracklebacks were on fire! Fished around the whole island catching several fish then headed down to the flats below Pointe Royale and then on to the clay banks. Did not do so well down in these areas. Headed back up to the rocks above the boat ramp to finish the day with more fish on the brown ostrich herl cracklebacks. Not many people out today even though the water was off. Great day of fishing.

Have to agree with a primrose and pearl soft hackle. This time last year that fly worked extremely well in the rocking chair area especially with a slight chop and a bright day.

Thanks for the report Duane.

This post is generating alot of questions about flies so I thought I would post the answer to a few questions here.

I have no top secret flies, but I do like experimenting and finding new things that work down there. The primrose and pearl soft hackle is just about like the bead headed primrose and pearl midge. The tail or body is tied the same way with copper wire and flashabou. I use some pearl light bright for a thorax and then 3 wraps of starling hackle for a collar. The fly works great!

The brown ostrich herl crackle back is just a smaller version of a crackle back. When tying a 16 or smaller crackle back I was having trouble finding hackles small enough for the hook size. Ostrich herl was the answer. I still use peacock for the back and just palmer the ostrich as if it were the hackle. This is not a very tough fly and I might incorperate some ultra fine wire to reinforce the ostrich a little. When midging, the fish are focusing on midges (of course) which are a lot smaller than the normal crackle back. These smaller ostrich crackle backs seemed to be exactly what the fish wanted.

Hope all this helps,

Duane
