Buzz and myself took a little trip to Crane Sunday. Dang was it cold early on! Turned out to be a nice day though. From the looks of the gravel bars, Crane has been hit pretty hard lately. Looks like herds of cattle stomping up and down the banks. We saw lots of trout. Very, very spooky though. I did manage to see two of the them doing a little courting. It was fabulous to watch. Until they caught me watching.

We did like most everyone does and started in the park. Not much action though. Aw well, that is par for the course I guess. It would have been nice to get one. We headed on down to the MDC area. We walked down a ways and peeked over the bank to see them scatter. Boy are they touchy. I walked on down and started to work my way back. I thought I struck pay dirt, and did for about ummmmm, 6 or 7 seconds. I hooked one on on a crawdad pattern but the wonderful feeling was short lived. I hadn't fished Crane since about 1994 so it had been that long since I had a McCloud on. I kept making way up and ran into Buzz on his way down. We later met up and continued making our way back up stream.

Since I wasn't too busy catching fish I snapped a few photos for you guy's. Buzz hooked into a good one as you can see from the photo. That is one of the nicest sculpins I have seen on the end of the line in awhile. Finally, on literally the last cast of the day, I hooked and landed one. I really didn't expect to catch him. As you see in the photo, we had just crawled through all that brush you see. I casted to the front end of it and WHAM! Thank goodness for that!

When we left there, we were shooting the bull and missed our turn and off to the land of Roaring River we went. Buzz put it on me there as he caught 4 in less than an hour. Way to go Buzz.

Here are some of the pics. Hope you enjoy them.

Well at least you caught one, and it had good color. They like to hide in them brushy holes on that creek.

Thanks Tim. I knew(or hoped) there was gonna be one there, I just didn't think he would bite after we went tromping through it. Crazy things happen.

Crane is always a challenge, that's for sure. They were as spooky as any I've ever seen. I also believe they've seen they're share of fishermen lately. It was fun walking the banks and seeing some really nice sized fish. I think I unconsciously missed the turn off so I had an excuse to go to Roaring River. We got there just as a hatch was happening. I didn't have time to really know what the hatch was so I tied on a yellow humpy and caught one on the second cast. Missed a lot of strikes in the fast water. At least I caught some trout and broke the dry spell. Those pictures turned out really nice Chief, you do have an eye for scenery.

If fishing was easy it would be called catching.

Great photos! Thanks for posting.

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.

The two best times to go fishing? When it is raining and when it is not.

Which probably has something to do with the number of fishing reports posted on the internet for all the world to see...

Maybe, but also the weather has been pretty nice so far. Crane is not an unknown trout stream and it gets a lot of pressure. Sundays are not the best times to fish streams like these either, the best times would be during the week when guys like me are working. :(

Kind of hypocritical to complain about the post when you are reading them too.

agreed, and its an MDC/public place anyway, open to anyone who wants to fish it and follow the rules

It's only hypocritical if I'm also posting fishing reports...

And if you want to go ahead and post up your good fishing reports, that's fine... I just hope you enjoy seeing four other cars in the parking lot when you get there.
