Hi folks,

I have a very nice pair of Simm's L2 waders that I got from BCO in Springfield. My question is this, for winter fishing am I better served investing in some good layering to go under these waders or am I better off investing in a premium set of neoprene waders. Just want to stay warm in the winter. I know this opens a can of worms because there are a lot of firm believers in both camps. Would love to hear all of your opinions.

Thanks,

Doug

No question. Layering. With the proper combination of polypropylene and fleece you will stay as warm as you need and without the clammy feeling that neoprene is going to cause you. I would invest in poly undies and a fleece top and bottoms. I also use the silk/poly socks under a pair of heavy hunting socks.

The fleece wader pants with stir-ups that I bought a few years ago are comfortable and warm.....a huge improvement in my opinion to the thick neophrene waders that i used to use.

+1 What dano said!! I am still looking for a good deal on some mid weight polypro ( thinking GI issue polar fleece) as I type this. Got a get some before new years for sure.

I fish in my breathables with a pair of the mid weight fleece Cabela's liners. They arent much over $30 if at all. On 99% of the days I fish with standard athletic socks. Occasionally on the coldest of winter days I will wear a mid weight pair of hiking socks. If you are fishing tailwaters what is below the water is usually not the determining factor in you getting cold. The water coming out of the dam is always around the same temp. Invest in a good warm hat that covers your ears and a good pair of gloves that stay warm when wet.

I'll have seconds on that potion?! :P

And that's why I always bring a backup bottle of creamer. Everybody wants some.

As far as what to wear under your waders I agree with vanven, it's more important to me to keep my head and hands warm. As far as what to wear underneath, I've always just worn my jeans. Probably not the most comfortable way to go, but I seldom get cold.
