Members mo_bowhunter Posted December 24, 2008 Members Posted December 24, 2008 This will be my first trip down to Taney to try my luck on trout. I have a simple and maybe dumb question but I wanted to make sure I cover it before I head down to the lake. With the possibility of freezing temps and using a trolling motor - do you guys ever have your trolling motor shaft freeze up so you cannot steer? I have experienced this last weekend duck hunting - we use the trolling motor to move around when we are setting and retrieivng the decoys. Are there any good tips on how to fight this? I have search the forum in a couple different categories and could not find anything. Thanks for your time and help!
duckydoty Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 I do not have much experience with using a trolling motor on Taney, but the water there is usually pretty warm compared to other bodies of water this time of year. I have never seen Taney froze over. I think that the warmer water should keep the trolling motor from freezing even on the coldest days, but I could be wrong. troutchaser Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 Put Vaseline under the collar. It keeps the water out and it won't freeze up on you. Silicone grease will do the same thing, it just costs more. Paul Rone
twosets Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 The water comming out of the dam is nowhere near freezing so tany is much warmer than the surface temp of other Missouri lakes in extreme cold. I have never heard of a trolling moter freezing on tany. "This is not Nam. This is bowling. There are rules."

jdmidwest Posted December 25, 2008 Posted December 25, 2008 I never had one freeze up but I dinged up the blades on mine last week busting 1/2 inch ice to the blind. The chunks were building up behind the boat and getting caught in the blade. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
