Flysmallie Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Just what all are you guy's packing when wade fishing? Well when I'm after smallmouth it's just one small box in my pocket, along with some pliers and however many cold beers that I can fit in the rest of my pockets.

OKFlyFisher44 Posted January 22, 2009 Author Posted January 22, 2009 Just what all are you guy's packing when wade fishing? In both my vests I always had 2-3 fly boxes, a small box w/ indicators (both foam and yarn), a weight dispenser, forcepts, clippers, leatherman, mini tool that looks like a pen that has a phillips and flathead on each end, tippet spools ranging from 5X-7X, small spool of 3lb Maxima (just in case), liquid and powder floatant (don't know why), a couple extra tapered leaders, defogger spray, and a tape measure. Along with all that crap...sometimes I would carry an extra pair of socks, pair of gloves, 35mm camera, rain slicker, and a wide range of other random items depending on the time of the year and where I was fishing! It was a lot of crap...heh! In my waist pack I just have 1 fly box, small box w/ indicators, weight dispenser, forcepts, clippers, leatherman, tippet spools, power floatant, and a couple extra tapered leaders. Thinned out all the junk that I usually care in my vest. Which is another reason I like my waist pack because it made me be more efficient in what I was carrying...or so I'd like to think Oh yeah...usually always had a pouch of my favorite chewing tobacco...always gotta have a chew when I'm fishing Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...

That why I like cold water and carry a stringer. Jon Joy ___________ "A jerk at one end of the line is enough." unknown author The Second Amendment was written for hunting tyrants not ducks. Trout Stalker Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I have switched from vest, to waist, to chest pack, and to just a lanyard many times. Big problem for me is the waist back doesn't fit right for me. My upper body is bigger than my waist. Then the waist pack falls down and I walk like a duck. The vest is hot in the summer and in the way in the winter with a heavy jacket on. A chest pack is in my way, because of my fat gut and I can't see my feet while wading. A lanyard is great as long as you have a pocket to put your fly box and tippet in. In a nut shell, I still switch back and forth depending on where I am fishing and how far I am away from the truck. When I take my yearly trip to the Smoky's, I either use a lanyard since alot of streams are rod side. When we hike into the back country for the day I use my Fishpond Shooting Star for my lunch, jacket, and etc. Once we arrive to the stream I then remove the backpack and just use the chest pack (which is a Windwalker chest pack) as a sling bag. I am far from rich, but I believe in Fishpond and there quality. BTW, I go back to a vest when I want to be traditional.

I figure in about 20 years I'll get to that stage where I just don't give a rat's arse how I look, and my kids will have grown up enough that they're not embarrassed by things, and I'll throw on some suspenders. Big red ones! John

vanven Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I am constantly debating whether I need a small chest pack as well. I have a William Joseph Fusion vest that I love. It is very similiar to the Simms G3 vests. I just find myself carrying too much and like many other posters the vest is hot in the summer and bulky in the winter when layering clothes. I tend to do a lot of night fishing where most of the stuff in my vest is useless and where I am typically wearing the most layers. In that case all I really need is my streamer box, a spare leader, one spool of tippet, nippers, and on cold days my catch-em-release tool. I know a waist pack would work perfectly for this. -Jerod
