dwiebenga Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Hey all, I have been doing some research, and I have not come up with a good conclusion. So I am coming to the experts! I am on a budget, and I need a new Crankbait reel for under $100. I am going to be throwing DD22 type baits. I saw BPS has a sale on the Pro Qualifier for $50. Is this a good choice? It has the 5.2.1 ratio. Help!!!
Members KCNitro Posted January 21, 2009 Members Posted January 21, 2009 I have not had much luck with BPS reels, the two I have owned broke in the first year(one in the first day). I did by one of the Quantum KVD edition reels and love it. It was the older version, I think the new reel is black and red, mine was black and gray. I would go with the 5.2:1 ratio in whichever reel you chose.

I would suggest ( if you are going to use the reel just for crankbaits ) that you take a look @ the BPS David Fritts Signature Series also. This would also be a good one as it is designed for crankbaits &, it will leave you with a few dollars for a couple of those " BIG CRANKBAITS " !!!!!!! Very good thinking on the 5.2:1 gear ratio, stay with the lower gear ratios so you don't overpower the crankbait. Rock View Resort Table Rock Lake Greg Pope, Owner/Operator & Fishing Guide
Members JRD Posted January 21, 2009 Members Posted January 21, 2009 I use the pro qualifer exclusively and have never had a problem. The 2009 is only available in a 7.1:1 and a 6.4:1 I believe.
Members tkite Posted January 21, 2009 Members Posted January 21, 2009 I just recieved 2 of the pro qualifiers that your talking about. I put the same jig on one of them and 1 on one of my Revo reels. Realy couldnt tell that much difference in them. They cast about them same and it feels like a very solid reel.
brownieman Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 I have an Ambassadeur 5500c I have used for many years...has always treated me well. I also use a Shimano Corsair 300...not alot of line capacity and a slow gear ratio and a Shimano Catala 400...more line capacity and faster gear ratio. Of those 3 I use the Catala most. I prefer a faster retrieve, it's easier for me to slow the retrieve down than speed it up, little less work and I have taken some of the brakes out of them all for casting distance. Hope this helps. bm My friends say I'm a douche bag ?? Avatar...mister brownie bm <><
Tom Spence Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I've been very happy with the green BPS Extreme reels. I have several and for cranks I've used the 5:2:1 reels. I think they sell new for around $70 Tom Spence Champion Boats http://championboats.com Luck E Strike USA http://martyconradfishing.com
redbud Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 rick clunn sig series has served me well for 5 years now,it works pretty good with spinnerbaits also. the magnetic break is easily adjustable for windy conditions.if you live near Springfield check the catalog outlet youcan pick up some good deals on reconditioned or returned merchandise.
CaptainJoe Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 I agree with the previous post. I like the BPS Extreme Reels ($79). They have a 5.2:1, 6.3:1, 7.1:1, flipping, wide spool, and light tackle reels. For crankbaits, I use the 5.2:1. These reels cast very far. The free spool is great. I use it on a BPS Crankin Stick ($59, on sale now for $39) which is graphic and fiberglass combined. I have three rods ready: square-billed, wiggle wart, and a deep diver. Stacey King recommended the combo to me a couple of years ago and it has worked well for me. And inexpensive, too. Here is a 3# caught this past Thursday on a Norman deep diver: Good luck! techo Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 The green BPS combos have held up for me so far too. Nice fish! Tim Carpenter
