Don Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I made my first mecca to Crane Creek today. It was good weather and scenic. I started at the upper end of the city park. I threw an olive mohair leech until I was downstream from the ball park. I then started nymphing. It was here at the RR bridge hole that I caught my fist McCloud Bow. It was the only one I caught. I lost three others. All strikes were on a BH Pheasant Tail. I fished a little longer and ran into only one person. He stated he caught about 5 and pheasant tails were working for him as well. I tried several other flies woth no luck. I am glad I made the trip. What a neat stream. Don Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
duckydoty Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Nice fish Don! A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
patfish Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Nice Don! I still have a score to settle with the McClouds.
timsfly Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Were you in the small truck parked above the bridge, I think it was a red/white S-10? I was going to fish in the park, but I went on down and fished the area below the dairy farm. DD'sMC Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Great report, and nice McCloud. Even when you don't catch a lot of fish at Crane, it's a great place to explore. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. The two best times to go fishing? When it is raining and when it is not.
Don Posted February 23, 2009 Author Posted February 23, 2009 Were you in the small truck parked above the bridge, I think it was a red/white S-10? I was going to fish in the park, but I went on down and fished the area below the dairy farm. I had a green Ford Ranger parked at the upstream section of the park. Before I went home, I drove down to the MDC access below the farm and the MDC Upper Wire Rd middle access just to look around for my next trip. Did you have a good day? Don Don May I caught you a delicious bass.

Crane Creek is definitely an enchanting little creek. I learn something new every time I go there. The fact that you caught one of these wild fish your first time there is something not too many people can say including me. I moved upstream after I ran into you and noticed some of the trout were coming up aggressively after the caddis that were skittering around in the riffles. I tied on an elk hair caddis and hooked up with a couple more and missed about three before calling it a day. Crane Creek definitely isn't a place to come to if your looking for numbers or size, but it can be rewarding if you can stand the snakes, spiders, thick vegetation and ultra spooky trout. timsfly Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Yes Don, I had a good day. Caught a few, the weather was great. Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
Members MarkinKC Posted February 24, 2009 Members Posted February 24, 2009 Nice work catching one on your first trip Don. I got skunked on my first two trips, finally broke the ice on the third visit. And thanks for including a couple of photos of the creek. It is indeed a pretty place to fish.
