nwaoutdoorsman Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 I have a few questions and not sure this is the right area for it, but I figured you guys from table rock might be able to help. Last year I started fishing a grub for the first time and had a great deal of success with it catching smallmouths. My problem is that I've had a hard time finding exactly the jigheads I want. Its hard to find any with a premium hook and when I do they all seem to have a long shank on them causing the tail of the grub to become snagged. Looks like using a shorter shanked hook would put the point further from the tail and eliminate this problem. I was using 1/4 and 3/8. Not sure but I think the hooks were about a 3/0. So, anyone know where I can find something better? Any suggestions? Also, do you guys use painted heads(red/chart./etc.) or just plain lead? Thanks!

Firstly if you are looking for a premium hook you must be willing to pay the price... Owner hooks makes two styles of jigheads that I really like (unpainted). One is a round head and the other is called a bullet type. Both have 1/0 owner super needle point hooks. They still grab the tail of the grubs occasionally... I think this is a problem that is hard to avoid with any style hook. With any 4" grub you have about 2" of body and 2" of tail so the hook comes out near the end of the body of the grub. I prefer the round head when fishing deep open water as the fall seems to be a little bit slower and those suspended fish see it longer. The bullet type can be rigged weedless much easier than the round head. It also slides through brush a little better, so naturally I use this one when flipping a grub into cover of any kind. nwaoutdoorsman Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 I have used the owner jigheads, but the ones I have in 1/4 and 3/8 both have a 3/0 hook in them. Thats in the roundball. I've never used bullet type. I just searched owners website and all I could find is the same ones I have. Heres a link to what I found there. Where do you buy them with 1/0 hooks? http://www.ownerhooks.com/pages/products/h.../ultraheads.htm
Dutch Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Get yourself a mold and put what ever type and size of hooks you want in the jigs. http://www.do-itmolds.com/
focused fishing Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Dutch is right. The best remedy for the situation is to make my own, I like both Mustad and Gamakatsu hooks for my grub heads, depends on how much I am willing to spend or how important the fishing is. I use a ball head most of the time but I know a lot of the other guides opt for a darter. To each his own. I don't notice much difference between them and the 1/0 hooks used in the bullet head. so that may not be what your looking for... in which case I would suggest the same thing as Dutch... get a mold and select the hooks and style head you want Troy Gregg
nwaoutdoorsman Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 Thanks guys! I'll check out getting a mold or just put up with it. I appreciate you guys helping out.
Dutch Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 If you are anywhere close to Springfield, John may have what you need at Fin and Feather.
Members TRSmallie Posted March 2, 2009 Members Posted March 2, 2009 Thanks guys! I'll check out getting a mold or just put up with it. I appreciate you guys helping out. I am big grub fisherman and like you I prefer a shorter shank. My absolute favorite hook is the Matzu Sickle hook for my grubs. It is Extremly sharp and has a wide Gap and it is hard for bass to throw it. And it is much cheaper than Gammies, Mustad, or VMC. I have used them all. For grub fishing they have been the best for me. Here is a pick of them. On the mold I use bolth round and A modified Poison Jig mold(My Favorite) I get all my stuff from Fin and Feather in Sprfld. Or order from Barlows on-line. Any more questions just PM and I would be glad to help!
