Chief Grey Bear Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Using the word hip was a poor choice on my part. I should have said something like concerned. My fault. Be sure to read this.http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/reid-joins-pelosi-in-opposing-weapons-ban-revival-2009-02-26.html I think you and some others here will find it very interesting. Just incase you are dial up as I am, I have taken the libery to C&P here for you also. Reid joins Pelosi in opposing ban revival By J. Taylor Rushing Posted: 02/26/09 10:17 PM [ET] Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will join House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in opposing any effort to revive the 1994 assault-weapons ban, putting them on the opposite side of the Obama administration. Reid spokesman Jim Manley said the Nevada Democrat will preserve his traditional pro-gun rights voting record. "Sen. Reid would oppose an effort [to] reinstate the ban if the Senate were to vote on it in the future," Manley told The Hill in an e-mail late Thursday night. It was not immediately clear whether Reid would block the bill from the Senate, but his opposition casts serious doubt on its chances. Also, Manley noted that Reid voted against the ban in 1994 and again when it expired in 2004. Reid's stance joins him with Pelosi, who told reporters Thursday that the administration had not checked with her before Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters the administration would attempt to reinstate the ban. Pelosi gave a flat “no” when asked if she had spoken to Holder or any other administration officials about the issue. “On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now,” Pelosi said at her weekly news conference. “I think it's clear the Bush administration didn’t do that.” Outside of the dig at the recent Republican president, that phrase is the stock line of those who don’t want to pass new gun control laws, such as the National Rifle Association (NRA). Holder said during a press conference Wednesday in Phoenix that Obama had made reinstating the ban one of his campaign promises. "There are obviously a number of things that are — that have been taking up a substantial amount of his time, and so I’m not sure exactly what the sequencing will be," Holder said. "It is something, however, that we still think would be an appropriate thing to do." The news caught Capitol Hill by surprise, immediately pitting Democrats and Republicans against each other and even exposing deep divides among Democrats. A number of House Democrats lost their seats after being targeted by the NRA for voting for the 1994 ban. Mike Soraghan contributed to this article. Forsythian Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 The "I don't like this or that type of firearm but mine are O.K. " is the type of thinking that divides all gun owners, much to the liking of people who really want to take away that right. Only by standing together will gun control be held back. There are no "reasonable restrictions" that will satisfy gun banners, only total confiscation. You can't be trusted, you know. Only the government is responsible enough, and knows what's best for you. The other point is the 2nd Amendment has absolutely nothing to do with hunting. It says the right of us folks "the people", to keep and bear "Arms". Short for armaments. As in military. I think we had just thrown of the yoke of an imperial government by force of arms, both with a cobbled together army and also a militia armed with their personal "Arms." The founding fathers thought it was important. It's the second amendment of the constitution, the first is the right of free speech. It's a shame people will barter it (and other freedoms) away so easy now. This topic always devolve into this type of debate, and I'll probably regret putting my two cents in here, but geez. Shouldn't we be fishing right now? Very well-put! I agree completely with JD and RS on this... don't willingly cede your (and my) constitutional rights. Cenosillicaphobiac
Whack'emGood Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 This is my last post about this stuff. I really don't care about guns OR gun control. I just thought I could provide a neutral and objective opinion, but apparently everybody gets too riled up about guns for my taste. Besides, I couldn't care less, either way. I don't know what this argument is doing under "General Angling Discussion" anyway. To answer your question JM... I only ran across it because, apparently, it was posted in the wrong category. Deleted all of my previous posts on this thread. Have fun. If I can't catch them on the conventional tackle that I already use, then I guess I just can't catch them." -LK (WHACK'EM)
trout fanatic Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Must be my lack of interpretive skills whack em-but I didn't see a whole lot of nuetral and objective ideas flowing from your posts. In fact it seems to me that for someone who is not interested you have some decidedly one sided ideas concerning gun control. I dunno-maybe I misinterpreted?
Chief Grey Bear Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I need to back up here. I am starting to go against my core beliefs on this issue just for the sake of arguing with jd. Many things said by him and others here are what I believe in my heart. Good points have been made. I have been thinking about this for a couple of and it has started to bother me as I was starting to go in a direction that I don't really believe in. I understand that the law makers may be trying to make us safer and in doing so are taking rights away from perfectly good law abiding citizens. I won't be joining the NRA but will stand with those that shoot for fun. Trout Stalker Posted March 10, 2009 Author Posted March 10, 2009 I don't know what this argument is doing under "General Angling Discussion" anyway. To answer your question JM... I only ran across it because, apparently, it was posted in the wrong category. My mistake for putting this subject under the wrong location. Forgive me if you can. I am far from perfect. I can relocate it or just drop the subject.
Trout Stalker Posted March 10, 2009 Author Posted March 10, 2009 Now I see why I pick General Angling Discussion placing this topic. I can't find just a General Dicussion.
Chief Grey Bear Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Don't blame yourself TS. This place is getting so big with all of the sub forums it is getting harder and harder to navigate. bigredbirdfan Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 My dog pees on the rug in the hallway to my bedroom.Do you think he has a reason or is it something just to do on a long winter nite??? Maybe he is showing is displeasure of the un-availability of AMMO. I inquired about .22 brick at Walmart. The kid said when asked when it comes in "anyone's guess" and gave me the impression of just give up. Maybe I will go over and grab some camping equipment and set up a camp there at the sporting goods department. When they ask me what the hell I'm doing I'll say waiting on AMMO. When they say I can't just grab camping equipment without paying for I'll give them a credit card and say start me a tab and by the way go grab me some bbq chicken tenders, a case of Pabst Blue Ribbon, a cooler and a bag of ice because I'm staying until I get my brick of .22.
